Review:

Rebecca Ross’s Ruthless Vows serves as the epic conclusion to the captivating tale that began in Divine Rivals. The story picks up two weeks after Iris Winnow returns home bruised and heartbroken, but the war is far from over. With Roman missing and the city of Oath in disbelief, Iris and her friend Attie seize another chance to report on Dacre’s movements, heading west despite the looming danger. Ross masterfully builds tension as the characters navigate a city unprepared for the encroaching conflict, creating a gripping narrative that keeps readers on edge.

The character development shines through as Roman awakens in Dacre’s realm, unable to remember his past. His gradual journey of self-discovery, alongside his correspondence with a mysterious pen pal, adds layers to the story. The internal conflict he faces—whether to align with Dacre or to embrace the god who healed him—serves as a powerful exploration of loyalty and choice. Iris’s determination to reconnect with Roman while navigating her own fears adds emotional depth, showcasing Ross’s ability to craft relatable and complex characters.

Themes of love, sacrifice, and the consequences of war permeate the narrative. Ross skillfully addresses the weight of choices in a time of turmoil, compelling readers to reflect on the cost of loyalty and the strength of love in the face of adversity. The pacing is expertly managed, with a blend of action and introspection that propels the story forward and keeps the reader invested.

The conclusion of Ruthless Vows is both satisfying and thought-provoking, weaving together the threads of romance and war in a way that resonates deeply. With its lush world-building and richly developed characters, this novel is a stunning finale to a beautifully crafted series. Ross has created a memorable journey that will leave readers eagerly anticipating her next work.

Series Review: The Prison Healer Series by Lynette Noni

Welcome to my review of The Prison Healer series by Lynette Noni, a thrilling fantasy trilogy that captivated me from start to finish. This series takes readers on an unforgettable journey through a world filled with magic, danger, and resilience, following the story of Kiva Meridan—a healer trapped in a brutal prison who must navigate deadly trials, hidden secrets, and a fight for survival. With each book, Noni delivers gripping twists, complex characters, and a blend of action and heartwarming moments. If you’re looking for a series that keeps you on the edge of your seat while tugging at your heartstrings, this one is for you! 4.33What Worked:1. Strong, Relatable Protagonist: Kiva Meridan is a resilient and resourceful heroine who’s easy to root for. Her journey from a vulnerable prisoner to a brave, determined fighter is compelling, and Noni does a great job of developing her character’s strengths and vulnerabilities. Kiva’s struggles and courage make her an engaging protagonist whose story you want to follow.
2. Intricate World-Building: The series excels in creating a vivid, multi-layered world, from the dark, gritty atmosphere of Zalindov prison to the more magical and mysterious settings introduced later in the series. Noni’s attention to detail helps to immerse readers, making the fantasy elements feel believable and the stakes all the more real.
3. Tension and Twists: One of the standout aspects of the series is its ability to keep readers guessing. Each book is filled with twists, unexpected reveals, and clever plot turns that heighten the tension. The blend of high-stakes challenges, political intrigue, and shocking secrets ensures that there’s never a dull moment, keeping readers eagerly turning the pages.
What Could Have Been Better:1. Pacing Issues: While the series has plenty of action and twists, there are sections where the pacing slows down, especially in the middle parts of the books. Some scenes felt drawn out or repetitive, which disrupted the otherwise intense and gripping narrative flow. A tighter edit could have maintained the momentum throughout the series.
2. Predictable Elements: Although there are some great twists, a few plot developments were fairly predictable, especially for seasoned fantasy readers. Certain character arcs and storylines followed familiar tropes, which lessened the impact of what could have been more surprising moments.
3. Underdeveloped Side Characters: While Kiva is a well-rounded and engaging protagonist, some of the supporting characters lacked depth. There were intriguing characters introduced throughout the series, but not all of them received enough development or screen time. More backstory or exploration of their motivations could have added richness to the overall narrative and enhanced the connections between the characters.
Conclusion:Overall, The Prison Healer series by Lynette Noni is a captivating and thrilling fantasy journey that brings together resilience, magic, and intrigue. With a strong protagonist, an intricately crafted world, and a storyline full of twists, it offers plenty of moments that keep readers hooked from start to finish. While there are areas where pacing and character development could have been stronger, the series succeeds in delivering an emotional and action-packed tale of survival and courage. If you’re a fan of fantasy with compelling characters, high-stakes trials, and a blend of dark and hopeful themes, this series is definitely worth a read.

Book Review: Good Dirt by Charmaine Wilkerson

My book review of Good Dirt by Charmaine Wilkerson.

Title: Good Dirt

By: Charmaine Wilkerson

Genre: Fiction

Pages: 368

Release Date: January 28th, 2025

Publisher: Ballantine Books

Rating: ★★★★☆

Summary from Goodreads:The daughter of an affluent Black family pieces together the connection between a childhood tragedy and a beloved heirloom in this moving novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Black Cake, a Read with Jenna Book Club Pick
When ten-year-old Ebby Freeman heard the gunshot, time stopped. And when she saw her brother, Baz, lying on the floor surrounded by the shattered pieces of a centuries-old jar, life as Ebby knew it shattered as well.
The crime was never solved—and because the Freemans were one of the only Black families in a particularly well-to-do enclave of New England—the case has had an enduring, voyeuristic pull for the public. The last thing the Freemans want is another media frenzy splashing their family across the papers, but when Ebby's high profile romance falls apart without any explanation, that's exactly what they get.
So Ebby flees to France, only for her past to follow her there. And as she tries to process what's happened, she begins to think about the other loss her family suffered on that day eighteen years ago—the stoneware jar that had been in their family for generations, brought North by an enslaved ancestor. But little does she know that the handcrafted piece of pottery held more than just her family's history—it might also hold the key to unlocking her own future.
In this sweeping, evocative novel, Charmaine Wilkerson brings to life a multi-generational epic that examines how the past informs our present.

Review:Good Dirt by Charmaine Wilkerson is a beautifully layered exploration of family, heritage, and the power of untold stories. The novel dives deep into the lives of its characters, uncovering the hidden connections and histories that bind them. Wilkerson’s writing is lush and evocative, drawing readers into a narrative that seamlessly weaves between past and present, allowing the characters’ stories to unfold at a gentle, steady pace. The way she captures the complexities of family relationships and the weight of legacy is masterful, making the book feel both intimate and universal.
One of the novel’s strengths lies in its ability to handle themes of cultural identity, generational trauma, and resilience without feeling heavy-handed. Each character is meticulously crafted, their struggles and triumphs resonating long after the story ends. While the pacing can be slow at times, the depth of emotion and rich storytelling make it worth savoring. Good Dirt isn’t just about the past; it’s about how the past shapes who we are, how we grow, and what we choose to pass on. Fans of character-driven, introspective narratives will find much to love in this thoughtful, poignant novel that leaves you reflecting on the stories buried beneath the surface of our lives.

Triple Take Tuesday - Achebe, Golden and Quinn

Welcome to another "Triple Take Tuesday," where I bring you three book reviews in one go! This week, I've got a diverse selection that took me on journeys through love, mystery, and adventure. Each of these stories offered a unique twist, from heartwarming romance to pulse-pounding thrillers and everything in between. So, grab your favorite drink, get cozy, and let’s dive into these three captivating reads!

Things Fall Apart
Chinua Achebe★★★★☆Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe is a powerful and poignant exploration of the clash between traditional Igbo culture and the disruptive forces of colonialism. Through the story of Okonkwo, a proud and complex warrior, Achebe paints a vivid picture of life in a Nigerian village, capturing the beauty and complexity of its customs, beliefs, and social structure. The novel's strength lies in its nuanced portrayal of Okonkwo’s struggle to maintain his identity and way of life amid rapid change, as well as its critique of the destructive impact of European colonization. Achebe’s prose is clear and evocative, bringing to life the rich culture of the Igbo people, while also challenging readers to reflect on themes of power, pride, and resistance. A must-read for anyone interested in African literature and postcolonial narratives.

A Promise of Peridot
Kate Golden★★★★☆A Promise of Peridot by Kate Golden is a thrilling sequel that plunges readers deeper into a world of magic, prophecy, and heart-wrenching choices. Following Arwen Valondale’s journey after the battle of Siren's Bay, the story delves into themes of betrayal, power, and love as she navigates her complicated feelings for King Kane Ravenwood while seeking the legendary Blade of the Sun. Golden masterfully blends action with emotional depth, creating a gripping narrative where dark forces loom, and Arwen’s struggle to reconcile her past and present drives the story forward. With vivid descriptions and high-stakes adventure, this book is perfect for fans of epic fantasy romance. While a few plot twists felt slightly predictable, the emotional complexity and richly crafted world more than make up for it, earning it a solid 4 stars.

When He Was Wicked
Julia Quinn★★★☆☆When He Was Wicked by Julia Quinn is an enjoyable addition to the Bridgerton series, but it doesn’t quite reach the heights of some of the other books. The story follows Michael Stirling, a charming rake, who has secretly loved his cousin’s wife, Francesca Bridgerton, for years. After tragedy strikes, Michael and Francesca are drawn together in a slow-burn romance filled with longing and guilt. While Quinn’s writing is as witty and engaging as ever, the chemistry between the leads feels a bit overshadowed by the heavy emotional baggage they both carry. The slow pacing, particularly in the middle, makes the story drag at times. However, fans of the series will still appreciate the depth of emotion and character growth in this tale of love, loss, and healing. A solid, though not standout, read in the Bridgerton saga.

Review:The story centers around a protagonist who is drawn into a world of shadows, where the line between right and wrong is constantly shifting. Jacka skillfully creates a moody, atmospheric setting that pulls readers into a world where nothing is straightforward, and trust is a rare commodity. The protagonist’s struggle with their newfound, shadowy powers is at the heart of the narrative, adding layers of internal conflict that make their journey as much about self-discovery as it is about navigating a web of deceit and manipulation.
The book shines in its world-building, with a magic system that feels both fresh and intricately designed, seamlessly blending elements of dark fantasy with urban landscapes. Jacka’s attention to detail enriches the setting, but it occasionally slows down the plot, making parts of the story feel a bit drawn out. However, the tension is skillfully maintained through a series of clever twists and unpredictable developments that keep the reader guessing. The supporting cast adds further depth, with each character hiding their own secrets and motives, making the alliances and conflicts feel dynamic and engaging.
Overall, An Instruction in Shadow is a well-crafted, thought-provoking read that offers a blend of suspense, dark magic, and complex character dynamics. Though it requires patience through some of the more detailed scenes, the payoff is a richly layered story that rewards those who appreciate nuanced storytelling and moral ambiguity. Fans of urban fantasy and dark, atmospheric tales will find much to enjoy in Jacka’s latest work.

Reading through the Star Wars Universe Part 14

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away... my journey through the Star Wars universe began. From the pages of novels to the vibrant comics and expanded lore, the Star Wars saga is so much more than the iconic films. The rich narratives, complex characters, and intricate world-building create an experience unlike any other. Whether you’re a seasoned fan or new to this galaxy, exploring the written side of Star Wars opens up realms of adventure that even the films can’t fully capture. Buckle in as I dive into some of the most exciting and moving stories from the Star Wars universe.
Han Solo's Revenge
by Brian DaleySLAVERS BY CHANCE
There's always work for a space-faring freighter captain who doesn't ask awkward questions, and Han Solo quickly got a job that would pay him a cool 10,000 credits. It would also, he discovered as soon as he made planetfall to pick up his cargo, earn him and Chewbacca summary execution. The Corporate Sector Authority could overlook many crimes, but the slave trade carried with it mandatory capital punishment.

Thanks to the quick thinking of Blue Max, a computer-partner of Han's work 'droid Bollux, Han was able to turn the tables on the slavers and free their captives. But he and Chewie were dead broke, with not many prospects in sight.

Figuring that somebody still owe him 10,000 credits, Han kept a rendezvous the slavers had arranged with their shadowy boss. But the lovely girl who kept the date didn't fit his idea of a slave trader. And she wasn't. Rather, Fiolla was a full-fledged officer of the Sector Authority...most of whose laws Han had already broken. Now he was in real trouble!
Han Solo and the Lost Legacyby Brian Daley
When Chewbacca and Han Solo decide to embark on a journey to locate a rumored treasure after being pursued by the most notorious hitman in the universe, their ship is ransacked, killer robots are on their trail, and they must elude dangerous assassins.

Death Troopersby Joe Schreiber
When the Imperial prison barge Purge–temporary home to five hundred of the galaxy’s most ruthless killers, rebels, scoundrels, and thieves–breaks down in a distant, uninhabited part of space, its only hope appears to lie with a Star Destroyer found drifting, derelict, and seemingly abandoned. But when a boarding party from the Purge is sent to scavenge for parts, only half of them come back–bringing with them a horrific disease so lethal that within hours nearly all aboard the Purge die in ways too hideous to imagine.
And death is only the beginning.

The Purge’s half-dozen survivors–two teenage brothers, a sadistic captain of the guards, a couple of rogue smugglers, and the chief medical officer, the lone woman on board–will do whatever it takes to stay alive. But nothing can prepare them for what lies waiting aboard the Star Destroyer amid its vast creaking emptiness that isn’t really empty at all. For the dead are rising: soulless, unstoppable, and unspeakably hungry.
Thrawn: Alliances
by Timothy Zahn
"I have sensed a disturbance in the Force."
Ominous words under any circumstances, but all the more so when uttered by Emperor Palpatine. On Batuu, at the edges of the Unknown Regions, a threat to the Empire is taking root—its existence little more than a glimmer, its consequences as yet unknowable. But it is troubling enough to the Imperial leader to warrant investigation by his most powerful agents: ruthless enforcer Lord Darth Vader and brilliant strategist Grand Admiral Thrawn. Fierce rivals for the emperor's favor, and outspoken adversaries on Imperial affairs—including the Death Star project—the formidable pair seem unlikely partners for such a crucial mission. But the Emperor knows it's not the first time Vader and Thrawn have joined forces. And there's more behind his royal command than either man suspects.

In what seems like a lifetime ago, General Anakin Skywalker of the Galactic Republic, and Commander Mitth'raw'nuruodo, officer of the Chiss Ascendancy, crossed paths for the first time. One on a desperate personal quest, the other with motives unknown . . . and undisclosed. But facing a gauntlet of dangers on a far-flung world, they forged an uneasy alliance—neither remotely aware of what their futures held in store.

Now, thrust together once more, they find themselves bound again for the planet where they once fought side by side. There they will be doubly challenged—by a test of their allegiance to the Empire . . . and an enemy that threatens even their combined might.
The Force Unleashed 2by Sean Williams
As ruthless apprentice to Darth Vader, Starkiller was mercilessly schooled in the ways of the dark side, commanded to exterminate the last of the purged Jedi Order, and groomed for the ultimate Sith power play: assassination of the Emperor. He served without question, killed without remorse, and lost his heart without warning to beautiful Imperial fighter pilot Juno Eclipse, never suspecting that he was just a tool in the schemes of his masters—until it was too late to escape their lethal betrayal.
Juno mourned Starkiller as dead—but now he is back, purged of all memories and programmed to kill. And as fate brings Juno and Starkiller closer to reuniting, with Darth Vader determined not to lose his assassin a second time they will both have to make a stand. The prize is freedom. The punishment for failing will be eternal enslavement to the dark side of the Force.

Summary from Goodreads:A breathtaking, joy-filled novel about the people we love, the secrets we keep, and the enduring power of family, from the bestselling author of The Unsinkable Greta James.
The four Endicott siblings—Gemma, Connor, Roddy, and Jude—were once inseparable, a bond created by the absence of their dazzling, mercurial mother, who would return for a few weeks each summer to whisk them off on sprawling road trips around the country.
Decades later, the unthinkable has happened: the Endicotts haven’t spoken in years . . . until an out-of-the-blue text arrives from Jude, now a famous actress, summoning them to a small town in North Dakota. They’re each at a crossroads: Gemma, who put her own ambitions aside to raise the others, now isn’t sure if she wants to be a mother herself; Connor, a celebrated novelist, is floundering after his recent divorce and suffering from an epic case of writer’s block; and Roddy, at the tail end of a professional soccer career, is dangerously close to losing his future husband for the chance at one last season.
Jude is the only Endicott who seems to have it all together—but appearances can be deceiving. As the weekend unfolds, and the siblings wrestle with their shared past and uncertain futures, they’ll discover that Jude has been keeping three secrets . . . each of which could change everything.
A captivating journey and an ode to forgiveness that takes readers across all fifty states, Fun for the Whole Family brims with heart and resonates long after the final page.
