Song of the Forever RainsE.J. MellowDNF at 19%.
Song of the Forever Rains by E.J. Mellow had all the ingredients for a sweeping fantasy—mystery, magic, and a dark, lyrical atmosphere—but unfortunately, it just didn’t catch my attention. Despite a promising premise and a unique magical system, I struggled to connect with the characters and found the pacing too slow to keep me engaged. The writing is lovely, but the story never quite pulled me in, and I ultimately decided to set it aside. A DNF for me, but readers who enjoy slow-burn fantasy with poetic prose may still find it worth exploring.

Saturday Sips: A Week of Reading
Welcome to this week’s Saturday Sips, where I serve up quick, spoiler-free reviews of five books I read last week! If you’re looking for bite-sized book recommendations across a mix of genres, you’re in the right place. From thrilling page-turners to heartwarming fiction, these reads brought a little bit of everything to my week—and I’m here to spill the highlights. Whether you're building your weekend TBR or just love discovering new titles, here are five books worth sipping on.
A Fire in the SkySophie Jordan★★★★★
Sophie Jordan’s A Fire in the Sky completely captivated me with its rich world-building, compelling characters, and gripping storytelling. I absolutely loved this book—the tension, the romance, and the emotional depth all worked beautifully—but I couldn’t help but wish it had been longer. Jordan had so much more she could have explored, and I would have gladly spent more time in this world. Still, even with its brevity, the story delivered a powerful impact, making it an easy five-star read for me.
The Dead Cat Tail AssassinsP. Djèlí Clark★★★★★
The Dead Cat Tail Assassins by P. Djèlí Clark is a sharp, mesmerizing blend of fantasy and political intrigue that captivated me from page one. Clark’s signature world-building is on full display here—rich, immersive, and effortlessly original—drawing readers into a story of rebellion, loyalty, and justice with undead assassins you won’t forget. The writing is both lyrical and razor-edged, balancing action with heart and humor in perfect measure. Every twist felt earned, every character pulsed with life, and by the end, I was left craving more of this world. An easy five stars—Clark has delivered another knockout.
Four Ruined RealmsMai Corland★★★★☆
Four Ruined Realms by Mai Corland is a gripping and imaginative fantasy that delivers a fresh take on political power struggles, ancient magic, and fractured alliances. Corland crafts a richly layered world with compelling characters, each navigating the ruins of empires and the weight of legacy. While the pacing lagged slightly in the middle and a few plot threads could’ve used more depth, the high-stakes twists and vivid atmosphere kept me fully engaged. With its unique realm-spanning structure and emotionally charged storytelling, this book is a strong edition to an epic series. Solid four stars!
Stalking Jack the RipperKerri Maniscalco★★★★★
Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco is a chilling, clever, and utterly captivating blend of historical fiction and gothic mystery that had me hooked from the first page. Audrey Rose is a fierce, intelligent heroine ahead of her time, and her chemistry with the charming yet infuriating Thomas Cresswell adds the perfect touch of wit and tension to the dark, atmospheric plot. Maniscalco’s writing is richly descriptive without being heavy, immersing readers in the eerie fog of Victorian London as the infamous Jack the Ripper case unfolds with gripping suspense. It’s a deliciously macabre read that delivers both thrills and heart—an easy five stars!
Famous Last WordsGillian McAllister★★★☆☆
Famous Last Words by Gillian McAllister offers an intriguing premise and McAllister’s signature emotional depth, but ultimately didn’t fully deliver for me. The story explores guilt, memory, and the weight of truth with thoughtful prose, yet the pacing felt uneven and the twists lacked the impact I was hoping for. While the characters are well-drawn and the moral ambiguity adds complexity, I found myself more curious than captivated. It’s a solid read with moments of brilliance, but not one that left a lasting impression—three stars.

Title: The City of Brass

Rating: ★★★★★
Summary from Goodreads:Nahri has never believed in magic. Certainly, she has power; on the streets of 18th century Cairo, she’s a con woman of unsurpassed talent. But she knows better than anyone that the trade she uses to get by—palm readings, zars, healings—are all tricks, sleights of hand, learned skills; a means to the delightful end of swindling Ottoman nobles.
But when Nahri accidentally summons an equally sly, darkly mysterious djinn warrior to her side during one of her cons, she’s forced to accept that the magical world she thought only existed in childhood stories is real. For the warrior tells her a new tale: across hot, windswept sands teeming with creatures of fire, and rivers where the mythical marid sleep; past ruins of once-magnificent human metropolises, and mountains where the circling hawks are not what they seem, lies Daevabad, the legendary city of brass, a city to which Nahri is irrevocably bound.
In that city, behind gilded brass walls laced with enchantments, behind the six gates of the six djinn tribes, old resentments are simmering. And when Nahri decides to enter this world, she learns that true power is fierce and brutal. That magic cannot shield her from the dangerous web of court politics. That even the cleverest of schemes can have deadly consequences.
After all, there is a reason they say be careful what you wish for...

Summary from Goodreads:A hilarious fantasy adventure in which a young woman, who is stuck in a time loop, decides the best way to defend the kingdom from the Dark Lord is to become the Dark Lord herself.
Davi has done this all before. She's tried to be the hero and take down the all-powerful Dark Lord. A hundred times she's rallied humanity and made the final charge. But the time loop always gets her in the end. Sometimes she's killed quickly. Sometimes it takes a while. But she's been defeated every time.
This time? She's done being the hero and done being stuck in this endless time loop. If the Dark Lord always wins, then maybe that's who she needs to be. It's Davi's turn to play on the winning side.

How to Become the Dark Lord and Die TryingDjango WexlerHow to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying by Django Wexler is a darkly humorous and delightfully twisted adventure that takes the well-worn trope of the evil overlord and flips it on its head. The story follows the ambitious and somewhat naive protagonist, who embarks on a quest to become the Dark Lord, only to find that the path to ultimate power is fraught with both danger and absurdity. Wexler’s writing shines with wit and sharp dialogue, blending moments of genuine tension with laugh-out-loud humor. The characters, particularly the protagonist, are well-developed, with clear motivations that drive their often misguided actions. The world-building is rich and immersive, and Wexler skillfully balances the fantasy elements with comedic undertones, making the book both entertaining and thought-provoking. The plot is fast-paced and filled with unexpected twists, keeping the reader engaged from start to finish. This book is a perfect blend of humor, fantasy, and dark intrigue, earning a solid 5-star rating for its unique take on the genre and its ability to entertain while still exploring deeper themes of ambition and morality. If you enjoy a mix of lightheartedness and dark fantasy, How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying is a must-read.
My FriendsFredrik BackmanMy Friends by Fredrik Backman is a heartfelt and introspective exploration of friendship, community, and the bonds that shape our lives. Through the eyes of a group of seemingly ordinary individuals, Backman skillfully reveals the depth of human connection, vulnerability, and the quiet struggles that define us all. His writing is both tender and witty, capturing the nuances of everyday life with a profound emotional resonance. The characters feel real and relatable, each carrying their own complexities and burdens, which makes their interactions both heartwarming and deeply moving. With its perfect balance of humor and raw emotion, My Friends is a beautifully crafted narrative that left me reflecting long after I turned the final page, earning a well-deserved 5-star rating for its compelling storytelling and universal themes of human connection.
Sunrise on the ReapingSuzanne CollinsSunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins is a masterfully crafted, gripping prequel that immerses readers in the world of Panem long before Katniss Everdeen’s time. Collins' signature blend of dystopian tension, rich world-building, and complex characters shines through as she explores the origins of the Hunger Games and the societal structures that led to its creation. The story is both heart-wrenching and thought-provoking, delving deep into the moral ambiguities of power, survival, and sacrifice. Collins’ pacing is perfect, building a sense of foreboding and unease, while her vivid prose makes the world feel painfully real. Sunrise on the Reaping captivates from start to finish, earning a well-deserved 5-star rating for its emotional depth, world-building, and its ability to expand the Hunger Games universe in a way that feels fresh yet familiar.
SalvaciónSandra ProudmanSalvación by Sandra Proudman is a captivating blend of historical fiction and magical realism that immerses readers in the turbulent world of Alta California after the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The protagonist, Lola de La Peña, is a dynamic, strong-willed young woman caught between societal expectations and her desire for freedom. As the mysterious and powerful vigilante Salvación, she takes on the monumental task of protecting her town from the destructive sal roja magic wielded by the dangerous Damien Hernández. Proudman masterfully intertwines Lola’s bravery and self-discovery with her budding romance with Alejandro, creating a deeply emotional and action-packed narrative. The novel’s exploration of loyalty, identity, and love amid a looming crisis makes it a powerful, unputdownable read.
Scorched SkiesE.J. MellowScorched Skies by E.J. Mellow reignited my love for reading with its intoxicating blend of romance, intrigue, and myth-inspired fantasy. Tanwen and Zolya’s star-crossed relationship crackles with tension, set against a richly imagined world where love and duty collide. The high-stakes court politics, forbidden romance, and breathtaking descriptions kept me utterly enthralled, making this book impossible to put down. Mellow’s lyrical prose and masterful storytelling make Scorched Skies a must-read, and I’m already desperate for the sequel!
