The Sky Is Falling
No, really, it is. And the bottom is dropping out too. At least that’s what Margaret Atwood says.
In her article for Medium: “It’s Not Climate Change; It’s Everything Change,” Atwood describes three possible outcomes for mankind’s response to climate change. The following is an excerpt from picture 2, her most dismal:
…It will quickly become apparent that the present world population of six and a half billion people is not only dependent on oil, but was created by it: humanity has expanded to...

Uncertain Footing
We go about our business without a care for the ground beneath us. However, can we be sure our foot will not slip? Losing what we think is firm footing can occur suddenly and without warning. Some causes are of this earth and some are not. All are common to the human condition.
One way we lose our footing is due to sinkholes. These occur because water erodes underground supports via either natural or manmade processes.
A Sinkhole in a Northeastern Chinese City Swallowed Five People [Required...

The Lord Is Always Before Me
Can you make the claim in the title like the psalmist David did? I find I can’t; at least not consistently. But I want to. I want to very much.
I have set the Lord always before me;
because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.
Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices;
my flesh also dwells secure.
Psalm 16:8-9 English Standard Version (ESV)
Calvin sayswith regard to verse 8:
…The meaning, therefore, is, that David kept his mind so intently fixed upon the providence of...

Do You Swear?
During the Lord Jesus’s Sermon on the Mount, He defined God’s standards for a righteous life. He cited common understandings for principled living and then raised the bar. Among these principles, He declared swearing (i.e., oath taking) off-limits.
“Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’
But I say to you, do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth,...

All Israel Shall Be Saved
Much has been said recently about the reestablishment of Israel in the Middle East. Even Kim Riddlebarger’s A Case for Amillennialism, which we mentioned a few weeks ago, touches on the issue of national Israel. Some of what’s been said is divisive and some is not.
So let’s step back from the contemporary rhetoric and see what the Bible says. The Apostle Paul discussed Israel in his letter to the church in Rome. He described that nation’s relationship to God now that the gospel had been revea...

Prayer – Why Should We Pray If He Is All-knowing?
John Calvin addressed the issue posed by the title in his Institutes of the Christian Religion. He says it’s absurd to dissuade people from praying because God always knows our needs without us informing Him. To the contrary, Calvin cites Psalm 145:18:
The Lord is near to all who call on him,
to all who call on him in truth. (ESV)
as the very reason that we should ask for His aid.
Calvin also shoots down the claim that it is unnecessary to ask for things He is ready and willing to provide. H...

Prayer – Why do it?
In his Institutes of the Christian Religion, John Calvin addresses why anyone should pray to God:
For there is a kind of [communication] between God and men, by which, having entered the upper sanctuary, they appear before Him and appeal to his promises, that when necessity requires they may learn by experiences that what they believed merely on the authority of his word was not in vain.
Now, he takes as a given that we hold to this:
Without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever w...

Now and Not Yet
I recently read Kim Riddlebarger’s A Case for Amillennialism. In it, he surveys ways Christians understand (or misunderstand) end times prophesy. I recommend the book for those interested in working through what they believe about the end.
He treats the subject fairly, in my opinion, although he does have a vested interest in Amillennialism. Throughout the text, he explores the concept of multiple fulfillments over time of individual Bible prophesies termed: ‘the now and not yet.’
While readi...

Writing – A Review
I recommend two books on writing: Gotham Writers Workshop: Writing Fiction edited by Alexander Steele and Essentials of Screenwriting: The Art, Craft, and Business of Film and Television Writing by Richard Walter.
GWW covers the fiction writing craft–character, plot, point of view, etc.–suitable for all formats: short stories, essays, novels, etc. If I had to guess, this is one of the sources from which the myriads of writing books on the market draw their lessons. GWW purports to give the sa...

Gift Economy — Review and Commentary by Bernhardt Writer
Michael Horton’s Ordinary: Sustainable Faith in a Radical, Restless World is summarized by the two section headings that divide the book: ‘radical and restless’ and ‘ordinary and content.’ The first section concerns evangelicalism and its contractual foundation. The second, reformed tradition and its covenantal grounding.
Two points stood out to me. First, how God gives gifts to His people who, in turn, give them to those inside and outside the faith through good works. Horton submits that ou...
