Mrs. Smith was born September 7, 1827, in West Randolph, Vt., the
daughter of George Chase. When she was eleven years old, she came west
with her grandfather, the Bishop, passing through Detroit on the way
to Ohio.

Mrs. Smith who was the grand-daughter of the late Bishop Philander
Chase, the first bishop of the Episcopal Church in the northwest, and
founder of Kenyon and Jubilee colleges, was the author, in the early
seventies, of a work of rare historical significance, her biography of
Bishop Chase. The book was a distinct addition to church history and
to Americana, treating of the development of the church, and of the
middle west, and giving, as it did, a fascinating and lifelike
portrayal of one of the foremost churchmen of the day.
