New Release: Saratoga Summers

saratoga summersI come bearing gifts! Or, well, one gift. A story: Saratoga Summers. Because the best antidote to winter is reading about a succession of summers, right?

This new story is a prequel and an immediate sequel to Stay the Distance. I know. I just couldn’t help myself. You’ll get what I mean when you read it. Here’s the synopsis:

July Carter is the daughter of a racehorse trainer and a jockey, always surrounded by other people’s horses. Beck Delaney is an owner’s son, his name connected to a growi...

Thanksgiving

For Americans, it’s time to show how thankful we are by eating an army’s worth of food over the course of a long weekend and spending billions of dollars on things we really don’t need. It’s going to be amazing. As an author, however, that got me thinking.

Writing, they say, is a solitary art. A person sits down with their thoughts and their word processor, repeatedly banging on a keyboard until a novel miraculously forms under their fingertips. There is a lot ab...

Downtime

By David Finch.

Taking a journey on the SS This Novel Owns My Soul. (Photo by David Finch.)

This week, I finished writing a book that has been with me for a solid 16 months. My goal was to finish Finding Daylight by the end of October, and I beat my goal by several days. Feeling pretty pleased with myself, I compiled it all into a pretty Word document for my editor, wrote a happy note to her that the book was done (OMG!), and pressed send.

Then I sat there and didn’t know what to do with myself.

Does anyone...

Happy Halloween!

HTTTD Cover7I’m happy to announce that the How to Trick the Devil anthology was released to the world this morning. It’s full of devilish stories in time for the holiday, including my Arkansas-inspired tale of Bebe, who has a rather weird problem, and a devil who isn’t exactly what she was expecting. There’s also a chicken, because it’s Arkansas.

Here’s what the anthology is about:

The devil lures with sweet words and promises, do you fall for his trap or trick him instead? Can you really have it all? Ho...

On Racing

Here’s another question from La Romantique. The answer I could write to this question could be a dissertation. Actually, I’m sure it is a dissertation, somewhere. But I’ll try to be brief.

What do you think about treatment of horses in horse racing and betting?

Ann's Smart Dancer is having none of this.

Ann’s Smart Dancer is having none of this.

I very rarely bet on horse racing. The most I’ve ever done is a two dollar sentimental bet, because I learned a long time ago that I’m not good at gambling and I’m not interested in learning h...

A few more questions…

I have a few more questions to answer! Here are three, right in a row:

Have you ridden an Andalusian horse? I think they are the greatest of breeds, kind, easy to ride, not flighty, easy to train, big, beautiful, sensible, the perfect breed. I was in Spain for @14 yrs. Loved it all, great people too!

Lucky! I have not done any of these things. Lived in Spain? Nope. Ridden an Andalusian? Extra nope. My riding experience has been on Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses, mainly. I’ve also had long s...
