“God With Us,” Week 2 — The “When Will I Be Loved?” Sermon Rewind
Yesterday’s message … Was one of those I felt good about from the moment I prepared it back in early October; Used an analogy with a $20 bill that seemed to connect with people; Was SUPPOSED to reference Linda Ronstadt (give the message title) … yet at all three hours that line completely escaped me;

“God With Us,” Week 2 — “When Will I Be Loved?”
Linda Ronstadt famously asked, “I’ve been cheated, been mistreated, when will I be loved?” I think if she had checked Matthew 1 closely, she might have asked an entirely different kind of question. Or: received a completely different kind of answer. That’s what we’re doing this Sunday as we move in to Week 2 of

Crossing Over From Death To Life
John 5:24 got me today: I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life. We usually feel like we have to wait for the other side of the grave to “cross over from

You Say “Fresh Expression”; We Say “Expresion Fresca”
“Fresh Expressions” is a movement within church-land to take ministry TO THE COMMUNITY rather than asking the community to come TO THE CHURCH. It’s high touch, low threat evangelism that places a priority on the ministry of presence. In our case, it’s better said “Expresion Fresca.” Huh? Well, here is Sammy Gonzalez, our Pastor of

Top Five Tuesday — Top Five Reflections From An “On The Border” Concert
This past Friday, I went with Julie and our Good Shepherd friend Jay Shennum to the Neighborhood Theater in the NoDa section of Charlotte to enjoy a concert by “On The Border,” an Eagles Tribute Band. This was our second such foray, but by far the most interesting. Why? Get some pink champagne on ice,

Getting Better Any Of The Time?
The Beatles used to sing about Getting Better All The Time. Which is a daunting task when you think about it. But how do you know if you’re getting better any of the time? This came home to me when, over the last several weeks, a young man has begun attending church with some friends

PRE-Thanksgiving Thanksgiving Memories
So here are some things I remember from Thanksgivings growing up and Thanksgivings grown up . . . My mom making pumpkin pie. (By the way, my mother turned 104 and if that’s not something to be thankful for, nothing is.) Eating cold pumpkin pie with whipped cream on top while watching late Sunday afternoon

Top Five Tuesday — Top Five Reflections From #GSDateNight 11.22.19
This past Friday night, Good Shepherd hosted a Date Night in which church staff and volunteers provided programming and care for 225 children, thereby enabling parents of those same kids to enjoy a Date Night. For the Date Night we provided a portrait photo …. … pizza date night conversation guide …. and two and

The Trust Factor, Week 4 — The “Double By-Pass” Sermon Rewind
Yesterday’s message … Began in Monroe, North Carolina, Tega Cay, SC, and the human heart; Borrowed liberally from the thinking and teaching of Alcoholics Anonymous; Included this a photo of my daughter, Taylor, at age 2 (see below); Landed at this bottom line: You’ll only have the blessings OF Jesus when you have surrender TO
