Not a Meritocracy

An excellent example of HuffPost muckraking has been making the rounds today. Honestly, I think author Lynn Shepherd wastes a lot of valuable screen space throwing a tantrum about JK Rowling’s relative success in publishing. But there is a point at which Shepherd gets my full attention.

It wasn’t just that the hype was drearily excessive, or that (by all accounts) the novel was no masterpiece and yet sold by the hundredweight, it was the way it crowded out everything else, however good, howeve...

Tabeguache, Ahhhhh!

First thing I have to say about this run is “I can’t find my heart rate monitor.” The second thing I have to say about this run is, “Don’t talk to me about my heart rate monitor.”

Click on the image for details of the run

Yeah, I’m high five-ing myself these evening. It was a short run, only three miles and change, but it was fun running. And dry. Did I mention that the trail wasn’t a muddy, nasty mess?

Aral was a real trooper on this trip too. He didn’t nap, rather he cheered me on all along th...

Selling Rosy

You read that right. I am selling my 2012 Surly Necromancerwith both wheel sets (size large). There are no problems with this bike, and I truly love to ride it. The problem is that for the foreseeable future I am in transition mode. Everything has to fit in my truck (which has a small bed) and be ready to go at the drop of a hat.

That and my focus is on raising my son, writing more books, and running. I just don’t have time to ride. The bike has been featured on Fat-Bike.comand is ready to rol...

Mud Month Has Arrived

Wow, it has been a while. The last time I posted a trail running related post was more than a year ago. Yeah, sure, there have been a number about running in general, but nothing about me actually running.

Bummer I know, but hey, there is good news. I’m back out on the trail again. Late at the end of 2013 two friends I ran with last back in 2009 compelled me (by the power of the Sun Sword) to get my ticket for the Canyon de Chelly Ultra. This has been one of a couple I’ve really wanted to run...

Admittedly a Long Shot

The title of this post says it all, but that won’t keep me from trying. John Green of vlogbrothersyoutube channel recently posted this video.

His bookTHE FAULT IN OUR STARSis currently number one on the USA Today and New York Times best sellers lists which is not only “bananas”, but some much deserved success.

And this success has made him wonder, “about all the books [he's] loved that aren’t best sellers.” And better, he is basically offering the temporary use of his nerdfighter platform to he...

Pedestrian Enforcement Assignments

The story ofAmanda Jo Stephen, a 24 year old runner in Austin, TX, is making the rounds right now. Out for a run she was physically detained by a pair of Austin Police and later arrested under Texas’ Failure to Identify law.

Herein lies a tale which I can only describe as a twisted story ofintransigence and sorrow. But lets take a step back and review the details.

Austin, TX is currently conducting an enforcement campaign which is supposed to protect the city’s more vulnerable citizens via thei...

Little Red on Big Red Buckle

Let me tell you, as an author, this moment feels a lot like being made. Andrea Johnson, over at Little Red Reviewer, just reviewed my first book THE BIG RED BUCKLE. There is a lot in here that makes me happy with the book, especially bits like this.

THE BIG RED BUCKLEcertainly has a lot that’s endurance sports related, but I saw it first as an underdog story, a story of honest teamwork and intelligence vs who can spend the most money on high tech equipment.”

Andrea isn’t a sports enthusiast. S...

TRBS: Gagets?

“Click, click, click” goes another gadget

The February Trail Runner Blog Symposium asks the question, “are tech gadgets more help or hindrance on the trails?” I’m sitting in an airport terminal more than 2,000 kilometers from my home and chuckling. My laugh has more to do with the order of my reading and investigations than anything else.

After spending more than an hour clearing security at Ronald Reagan I sat down wishing for my trigger point rollers. I took one bag for both Aral and I, it’s...

Mutual Appreciation Society

Hey sweet, the amazing and talented Andrea Johnson, over at Little Red Reviewer, interviewed me recently. She just published my answers, and THE BIG RED BUCKLE is on sale too boot! Only $0.99 until I regain network access later in the week. It is starting to feel a whole lot like a mutual appreciation society around here. Happy circumstance or evil plot to take over the world? You’re going to have to read them both and decide for yourself.

Later today, Aral and I hop back on an airplane, fly o...
