Total Cost for 16 Days in Sri LankaThis total is derived by adding all the totals in local currency and then converting to USD, as opposed to just adding the approximate USD figures. This is why the USD figures will not add up correctly.
Total Cost: 55220LKR = $415.75USD
Average Daily Cost: $25.98USD
The above totals do not include cost of flights to and from Sri Lanka (from Australia, to Guangzhou (China). I try to keep under a $50USD a day budget. That means for 16 days I have $800. I spent approx $420 while in Sri Lanka, which leaves me $380USD for flights.
My flights cost $637.50USD so I was $256.50USD over-budget. If you include my flights I spent an average of $66.05USD a day… still not too bad.
What Was Your Daily Average Cost of Travel in Sri LankaWe’d love to hear about it in the comments… or anything else you want to say
After 16 days in Sri Lanka, including flights, my cost of travel in Sri Lanka came to about $66USD per day, but only $26USD per day if you do not include flights.

Why You Should Travel to Sri Lanka – Sri Lanka Day 16
This post includes getting to Colombo airport, why you should travel to Sri Lanka and also provides directions, daily cost summary, other useful information and perhaps also some not so useful personal observations and opinions.
Getting to Colombo AirportColombo airport is actually called Katunayake Airport. Getting to Colombo airport wasn’t as straight forward as getting FROM Colombo airport to Colombo Fort.. but perhaps it is because I caught the bus from a location that was not the bus station… although, I’m unsure if you can.
In any case, I got on the #187 from the road near the Colombo Fort bus station (see the map below). Not all the 187’s go to the airport so double check you are on the right one. The difference between this one and the one I took on day one, is that this made its way through smaller districts and stopped frequently, sometimes for 5 or so minutes waiting for passengers. Instead of the 45-60 minutes it took 2 and a bit hours.

Map showing where I got the #187 bus to the Airport
Also, it drops you off about 1km away from the airport, so I had to walk the last bit.
Luckily I had left at 0800, so getting there by 1030 was still OK (my plane left at 1155).
Once at the airport I saw something I have never seen at any other airport before (not to say that it doesn’t happen.. maybe it does). School kids having a tour of the airport, even in the transit section.

School children having a tour of the airport.. and this is in the passenger only section
I had a pretty bad chicken sandwich for 550LKR and then spent the rest of my Sri Lankan money on snacks on the plane.. about 640LKR.
Security was very impressed by my Survival Keychain. I though they were going to confiscate the compass at the start, but they just liked using it. When I showed them that it was a whistle as well it blew their mind (no pun intended). Brilliant.
Why You Should Travel to Sri LankaThus ends my Sri Lanka trip… but I do have some final thoughts on why you should travel to Sri Lanka.
Sri Lankan People are Very FriendlyThe friendliness of people tops my list of reasons why you should travel to Sri Lanka. Sure a lot of them just want you to buy something, but many of them just want to talk. Even those that do just want you to buy something, when you politely tell them that you are not interested they still like to continue to talk to you with a smile.
I found that especially the younger males serving food liked to just talk/practice their English with me. I wonder if I was a female would I get the same response?
Food is SpicyThis may be a reason for some people not to travel to Sri Lanka, but in general, Sri Lanka has the spiciest food I’ve had in a country. I’ve not been to India yet.
They Speak EnglishNot all Sri Lankan’s can speak English, and in many of those that can it can be very limited, however, you can easily get by without learning Sinhala or Tamil. I learnt a few simple things but never used it. Most people that are likely to come across foreigners can speak English e.g. if you’re buying a train ticket etc.
Touts are Not too AggressiveIn my time in Sri Lanka I only had one tout physically grab me to try to get me into his store.
There’s Lots to See and DoSri Lanka may be small geographically, but there is a lot of stuff to see and do. I only had 2 weeks to spare so I picked Sri Lanka for it’s small size, but I could easily travel around for another 3-4 weeks there.
It’s CheapSri Lanka is one of the cheapest places I have been to, except for accommodation and some of the tourist sightseeing things.
It’s Very SafeThe last thing on this list of reasons why you should travel to Sri Lanka is there general feeling of safety. Maybe it is because it is a Buddhist country. I never felt unsafe in Sri Lanka and think thievery is not common (depending on where you are of course).
Bus rides got a bit exiting sometimes.
Just to reiterate how safe I think Sri Lanka is… if I was a female, I would have no problem traveling Sri Lanka alone.
Well that’s it for my list of why you should travel to Sri Lanka and also for this series of daily entry posts.

Free Walking Tour of Colombo – Sri Lanka Day 15
This post includes getting from Kalutara to Colombo, free walking tour of Colombo and everything contained in the walking tour and also provides directions, daily cost summary, other useful information and perhaps also some not so useful personal observations and opinions.
My neck is still a little sore but it is getting better everyday. Sitting on a plane tommorrow will not help it, but it is about 80% now so maybe by tomorrow it’ll be all good.
This morning I discovered I had misplaced/lost my sunglasses and also not feeling 100%.. a little run down I think.
Tonight is a full moon, so it is a pubic holiday. Does that mean they have a public holiday at least once a month?
I said my goodbye’s to Adrian and Jenny (from the guest-house) and made my way to Colombo.
Getting From Kalutara to ColomboI caught the 1045 train from the North Kalutara train station. It only cost 40LKR, and getting a seat was not a problem. It was a different type of train though, seats sideways.

First time I’ve seen a train in Sri Lanka with sideways seats
Once in Colombo I checked into the CityRest Fort Hostel, which I also stayed in on the first day I got to Sri Lanka. You can see a review on the Sri Lanka Day 1 post.
train colombo 1045
The title is a bit misleading. I did not go on a free walking tour. It is just me walking around Colombo, but I did see a bunch of stuff.
My original intention for the day was only to buy some sunglasses and a small mp3 player, but on the way in I heard from two different people that the Gangaramaya Temple was worth the look, especially today being a holiday.
My stroll to the Gangaramaya Temple ended up being a 5 hour walking tour of Colombo, and not a penny spent on sightseeing.
Slave Island Police StationThe first place I came across was Slave Island police station. Nothing special, just the name entertained me. Haha.. Slave Island.. what do the police do there? Just making sure no one gets paid?
Sri Lanka Airforce BaseThe next thing I came across on my walking tour of Colombo was the Sri Lanka Airforce Base. Actually, some of it was before the Slave Island Police Station, but this picture was taken after it.

SLAF. Sri Lanka Air Force. You can see the little guy in the cockpit.
Hindu TempleJust happen to come across this. No idea the name of it.

Much more impressive than the one In Kalutara.
Seema MalakayaSeema Malakaya was the first thing actually worth noting that I came across. I had seen the picture on WikiTravel.org/en/Colombo but couldn’t figure out where it was, then I just stumbled upon it. I was happy with that.

It was hot so I got an icy-pole for 30LKR.
Gangaramaya TempleFinally I got to Gangaramaya Temple which I did not get charged for, but I think it is because I went into the side door. Anyway, it was nice. There were lots of people there dressed in white and just listening to the ‘preacher’ which apparently talks all day.

Inside Gangaramaya Temple
I went to the top floor and saw an elephant chained up and some tourist taken photos, which annoyed me a little bit cause I reckon it’s cruel and we (tourists) shouldn’t support it.. however, I am not a vegetarian (I eat almost anything) so have a field day with that one.
Colombo National MuseumI figured since I was in the area I would get out of the heat and see the museum. I’m not a big museum fan but I think it is good to see the national museums of places to learn a bit about the countries history etc.
This would have cost 500LKR, but it was closed due to the Full Moon Holiday.
Theatre HouseClose to the museum was this theater house. Nice design.

Colombo Theater House
Vihara Maha Devi ParkThe next place I stumbled upon during my walking tour of Colombo was a sight for sore eyes. A beautiful big park.
Lots of people there (holiday) but it was still very pleasant. I had a nap under a tree.

Vihara Maha Devi Park
Town HallTown hall is across the road from the Vihara Maha Devi Park. I didn’t do in and I’m not sure if you can.

Colombo Town Hall
I did also come across the Mayors Residence which look really nice, but I didn’t get a picture.
Victoria Memorial… Hospital? This building looked funky so I snapped it. Upon closer inspection it says it is the hospital.. could it be so?

Victoria Memorial – might be the hospital
I was slowly fasing having only had an icypole since breakfast so on my way to the Pettah markets I got some small eats. Nothing I hadn’t tried before. 70LKR.
Pettah Floating MarketThe Pettah Floating Market is not to be confused with the street market. It is across the road from the bus station and is lots of souvenir shops and cafe type places.

Pettah Floating Market – Not the same thing as the street market
Pettah Street MarketFinally I came across the Pettah Street Market, the last stop on my free walking tour of Colombo. Turns out almost everything was closed due to the holiday.
A few workers about, the odd shop open, and these kids playing cricket in the street.

Kids playing cricket where the Pettah Market would be if it was not a holiday
Luckily the stalls closer to the train station where still open. I got some fruit for tomorrow morning (100LKR) and some sunglasses (330LKR). I tried to find an MP3 player but no-one seems to sell them with internal memory here.
Here’s a map of where I went. The green line represents roughly where I walked during my walking tour of Colombo.

Map of where I went in Colombo today
Back at the hostel I met 2 German guys and we went for dinner. I had Beef Curry and Roti (300LKR).

For long distances I like trains. Although buses are cheaper (usually) I find trains are a bit more comfortable and have better scenery. For short distanced I definitely like to walk, as you may have noticed by this free walking tour of Colombo post. Very rarely do I take private transport e.g. taxi. If it’s too far then I try for a bus.

My Ayurvedic Massage Experience – Sri Lanka Day 14
This post includes my Ayurvedic Massage experience, Holy Cross College, drums in the Kalutara Bodhiya Temple and also provides directions, daily cost summary, other useful information and perhaps also some not so useful personal observations and opinions.
My neck was still sore this morning, but I was keen to have my Ayurvedic Massage experience anyway so I paid for my accommodation (3200LKR for two nights) and set out.
On the way I took a day shot of the Pulinathalarama Maha Viharaya and had a quick walk around.

Pulinathalarama Maha Viharaya during the day
I also went to the train station (North Kalutara) to suss out getting to Colombo tomorrow. It leaves at 1045. Others are at around 0800 and 1230 ish. Like the train to here, there is no buying ahead, but I figure I have a better chance of getting a seat on the train than I do on the bus, which from what I’ve seen going past are very crowded.

Kalutara North Train Station
I walked through some of the ‘suburbs’ until I was at the massage place on the beach.

Kalutara residences
Saw this guy on the way also, just hopping from residence to residence.

Monitor lizard just stroll through the residences.
My Ayurvedic Massage ExperienceI arrived at the massage place around 1115. I had struck up a deal the day before for a 1 hour Ayurvedic Massage and a 15 minute Sirodara Puncha Karma therapy for 2000LKR.

The front of the Ayurvedic massage place I went to in Kalutara
My Sirodara Puncha Karma ExperienceSirodara Puncha Karma (or just Sirodara) is basically oil dripping on your head. Supposedly it has a lot of healing qualities. You lie face up and your eyes are covered with tissues to stop the oil going in them. I remember thinking, you should put more tissues, but nothing bad happened so all is good.
Then I guess they fill up this thing pictured with the medicinal oil and you just lie there and let it drip on your head.
At the start I kept thinking of that Chinese water torture, but it ended up being very relaxing and I even dozed off a few times.
We had agreed on 15 mintues but they gave me half an hour, because the lady (Ayer Dr Fernando) went to take a bath.
My Ayurvedic Massage ExperienceAfter my Sirodara Puncha Karma Experience I had my Ayurvedic Massage Experience.
I love massage. I enjoy giving them, but love receiving them more, and i have had a fair few in my time. I couldn’t pinpoint any special technique about Ayurvedic Massage (although I am sure there is), but I think the key secret is in the medicinal oils they use… and they use lots of oil.
My whole body was massaged (well, most of it ;)) and a lot of oil was rubbed into my hair. I’ve read that in India they do the massage completely nude (you are, not them), but this is not the case in Sri Lanka, although she did get pretty far up my legs. I guess I’ll discover the Indian Ayurvedic Massage Experience when I get there.
The lady was very chatty during the massage in her basic English and very friendly. She even offered to find me a Sri Lankan wife! Although I have had this offer from people in other countries also. At least I know if I ever want to get married I have options.
Her husband was also very friendly.
After the massage we had some (very sweet) Sri Lankan tea and I learnt that the husband has Diabetes, which makes me doubt the healing properties of the oils.
Getting to the Ayurvedic Massage in Kalutara
To get to the Ayervedic Massage place I went to just walk North along the beach. It is not far past the two big resorts. Look for the picture above, and her is the map below.

Map to get to the Ayurveda Massage place I went to
After that I went for lunch. I had Fried Rice with chicken, because that is all the pace I went to served. It was pretty good though and only 150LKR.

Chicken fried rice
After lunch I went for a swim in the beach then back to the accommodation for a nap.
Holy Cross CollegeThe lady at the Ayurveda Massage told me about a church on the mountain, and pointed out the Holy Cross College on my map. It was just in town so I decided to walk there.

Holy Cross College
As it turns out the Holy Cross Church was not on a mountain, but there was some stairs and it was nice. I have seen so many Buddhist Temples in Sri Lanka but not any churches so it was nice for a change.
Also, the view was decent.

View from the Holy Cross Church
Getting to the Holy Cross ChurchTo get to the Holy Cross College just walk south on the Galle road. Here’s a map.

Drums in Kalutara Bodhiya TempleI decided to go back to the Kalutara Bodhiya Temple Market since yesterday I had my pack on and it was really hot, I felt like I didn’t see it well. Also, it was on my way.

Kalutara Bodhiya Temple from the outside.. the picture I didn’t get yesterday
I’m glad I did because they where playing drums in there and the echo was amazing. The must start at 1800 because I got there at 1808… just in time to catch the end. I got the last 30 seconds on video, which as always, does not do it justice.
Finally I got some dinner (egg kottu and egg rotti for breakfast – 180LKR) then went back to the accommodation.

I wouldn’t say my Ayurvedic massage experience was awkward, but I did read some on India that were. Also, I had a friend who said she went somewhere (Thailand I think) where it was just assumed they wanted ‘extras’. Now that must have been an awkward massage.

Kalutara Bodhiya Temple – Sri Lanka Day 13
This post includes getting From Galle to Kalutara, Kalutara Hindi Temple, Kalutara Bodhiya Temple, finding accommodation in Kalutara, a Kalutara accommodation review, Kalutara Beach and also provides directions, daily cost summary, other useful information and perhaps also some not so useful personal observations and opinions.
I must have slept funny last night because I woke up with a really stiff neck this morning. I couldn’t even do my morning super-burpees because of it. I ended up making a 25% (roughly) Clove Oil mix which acted pretty good as a deep heat.
Getting From Galle to KalutaraI caught the 1055 train from Galle to Kalutara South. You can not reserve tickets or seats when getting from Galle to Kalutara. It is first come first serve and open seats, but I did not see anyone standing.
Getting from Galle to Kalutara by train only took about 2 and a bit hours and cost 120LKR.
Kalutara Hindi TempleMy original intention was to just come to Kalutara for one night. I was going to find accommodation near the train station, check out the Kalutara Hindi Temple which I heard was a ‘must see’ and take off to Colombo tomorrow morning.
I could not find accommodation near Kalutara South train station. As it turns out, Kalutara North is the place to be. In any case, I checked out the Kalutara Hindi Temple which is definitely NOT a must see.

The Kalutara Hindi temple. Nothing special in comparison to the hundreds of worship sites in Sri Lanka, but still special none the less… just because it is a temple after all
Kalutara Bodhiya TempleI must have screwed something up, because on the way to Kalutara North I came across the Kalutara Bodhiya Temple, which, although I wouldn’t rate it as a ‘Must See’, it was pretty good… and free.
It was too hard to take a picture of the whole Kalutara Bodhiya Temple from the outside, but I had wandered what would be inside the shrine. It’s a smaller shrine… and the echo inside is a bit surreal.

Inside the Shrine
Getting to Kalutara Bodhiya TempleKalutara Bodhiya Temple is just before the bridge.
The temple is on both sides of the road. They tell you to go to the left side first (as you face the bridge), then use the underpass to get to the right. I don’t think it makes a difference really, but the right side is (in my opinion) better.
Here’s a map.

Map to get to the Kalutara Bodhiya temple fro the Kalutara South train station
Finding Accommodation in KalutaraAfter looking around the Bodhiya Temple for about 40 minutes I started trekking toward Kalutara North with the intention of finding accommodation in Kalutara.
Buses for Colombo came past quite regularly so I figured if all else failed I could be in Colombo in a few hours, and there is buckets of accommodation there.

View of the river from the bridge. I think it is the Kaluganga River which might go as far inland as Nuwara Eliya
Along the way I ran into some locals who proceeded to show me different accommodations. They alwyas say they own the place, or it their brothers or some other relatives, which is never the case. They just get a cut for bringing people.

A lot of places just put what they sell in front of Lanka and that is the name of the shop.
Anyway, I had two criteria when finding accommodation in Kalutara:
1. Wifi
2. 1500LKR max
We tried two places and it wasn’t happening so I bid farewell and took a stroll along the beach with the intention of just going to Colombo.

Kalutara Beach
About 15 minutes later one of the guys came back saying they found a place so I he dinkied me (gave me a lift) on his push bike (lucky I travel light) to a home-stay.

Another part of Kalutara Beach
Kalutara Accommodation Review – Palm Grove Home-StayContrary to what he said, it was not 1500LKR per night. We settled on 1600LKR and then I also gave the guys 200LKR… which I should not have because the landlord gives them a kickback.
It is a good home-stay though. Hot water, good wifi, attached bathroom, very clean, meals available (which I assume are delicious but I didn’t indulge) and owned by a very nice older woman called Jenny (Jenavive). Her grandson also lives there who is about 20y/o and is also very nice. Their English is very good.
They even give you a anti mosquito thing-a-magig and a bed-sheet. A high powered ceiling fan is also in the room which is also useful for keeping mosquitoes away.
The first thing I noticed when I walked is was that they were Christians. It doesn’t matter to me, but just thought it was interesting seeing as everyone else seems to be Buddhist or Hindi.
This Kalutara accommodation review was for a hotel/guesthouse that is not on any booking sites. If you want to be safe, you can book your accommodation in Kalutara before you get there.
Getting to Palm Grove Home-Stay – KalutaraGetting to Palm Grove Home-Stay is easiest explained by map.

Map to get to Palm Grove Home-Stay in Kalutara from the Kalutara South train station
Kalutara BeachAfter settling in I continued my walk down Kalutara beach.

Sri Lankan’s playing in the water
Continuing down Kalutara Beack I came across a Ayurveda massage/healing center which was not attached to one of the massive hotels and went in for a chat. My neck was still sore from the morning but I’ll get one tomorrow and let you know how it goes.
After that I took a slow stroll back and got some food on the way…

Walking along the railway tracks
… came across this cemetery

Kalutara cemetary
It started pissing down (raining very hard) but luckily I had my trusty poncho.
I found this enormous amount of food for 280LKR.

I can hear people saying in myhead ‘you don’t have to eat it all you know’… but I do because I don’t like wasting food.
Finally I got back to my accommodation. There’s another temple just next to it. Here is is at night.

Although I may not hold the same beliefs as others (I am not religious), I like to respect their traditions e.g. not taking a photo with your back turned to an image of Buddha. Often I prefer not to enter religous sites, but I am glad I went into the Kalutara Bodhiya Temple. Some places just have good energy, and this was one of them.

What I Love About the Women of Sri Lanka – Sri Lanka Day 12
This post includes a wander around Galle, what I love about the women of Sri Lanka, where to get awesome Chicken Biryani in Galle and also provides directions, daily cost summary, other useful information and perhaps also some not so useful personal observations and opinions.
Today surely was a bit of a lazy day in Galle for me. Well, not really lazy, just not much sightseeing. I spent most of it fixing up the Sri Lanka blog posts, though I did go for a wander around Galle for a few hours at least.
A Wander Around GalleAfter a morning of hacking away at the computer I got out at about 1130-ish. I settled up my bill for 3 nights (5400LKR) and had a stroll around Galle town.
First up I went to the train station to suss out tomorrow. I have now decided on going to Kalutara because apparently the temple there is a must see. It is also at a convenient distance approximately halfway between here and Colombo.
After a quick feed I attempted to go see all the places of worship around Galle (there are lots), but after going to the first one I became uninterested… so I did what I do best and just took a wander around Galle.
I ended up along the rocky shore line along the road to Colombo, where I took this pic, then I turned back.
Next I headed into Galle Fort. The other day I just walked along the wall and the outer rim. Today I went through the middle. I did have ideas of checking out some of the museums, but again I got there and became uninterested.
I did come across a posts office though so sent of the postcards I had got from Ella. Apparently it is the same cost no matter where in the world you send the postcard to.. 25LKR per stamp.
After that I got my fruit from the lady near the train station (as opposed to the extortioner from the other day), tried another type of small eats and went back for a nap.
This ‘small eat’ is like a savory donut. Edible and tastes OK, but I would not get it again.

A savory donut
What I Love About the Women of Sri LankaThe women of Sri Lanka don’t appeal to me much physically. Don’t get me wrong, I have seen a few very good looking women here, and I am under the thought of mind that there are beautiful women everywhere in the world, but what I love about the women of Sri Lanka is that they have a very friendly nature and beautiful smiles.
Actually, even the men are very friendly in nature. Sri Lankans are just an exceptionally friendly people. It’s true that many of them want you to buy something, but if you refuse politely they still like to talk to you.
Anyway, back to the women. What I love about the women of Sri Lanka, apart from what I have already said, is the way they dress. Amazing colorful dresses that you would rarely see in the west.

The dresses the Sri Lankan women wear are amazing
Where to Get Awesome Chicken Biryani in GalleCome dinner time I just went to a little place next door to the Suwa Siri in, where I am staying.
They have Chicken Biryani for 190LKR per serve. I ordered that and some Paratha (flat bread). It was ridiculously good!
It ended up costing me 500LKR altogether but I think it is because he gave me two serves of chicken. Their English is very limited so when he asked how many serves I said one, but then I motioned at myself to say ‘just for me’. Perhaps he thought I needed two serves. I have found that the majority of the world thinks westerners eat more than the locals.
Anyway, it is still a good place to get awesome Chicken Biryani in Galle.
To find where to get awesome Chicken Biryani in Galle, go out of the alley that the Suwa Siri Inn is on. As you face the main road, it is the very first restaurant on your left.

This is about a thousand times better than the one from KFC last night

I much prefer to travel at a slower pace, but unfortunately I have a time limit for this trip (I had to get back to China by the 6th) so I’ve been rushing through it a bit. When I am traveling like this I like to take a ‘rest day’ to catch up on stuff, and I think that just taking a wander around Galle and pondering what I love about the women of Sri Lanka between working on my computer today was just what I needed.

Getting to Jungle Beach – Unawatuna – Sri Lanka Day 11
This post includes getting to Jungle Beach – Unawatuna, everything I did in Unawatuna (Welle Devalaya Temple, Rocky Coastline to Jungle Beach, Rock Beach, Japanese Peace Pagoda and getting back to Galle From Jungle Beach), experiencing KFC in Sri Lanka and also provides directions, daily cost summary and other useful information, and perhaps some not so usefubl personal observations and opinions.
The hat I bought yesterday was double lined so I wanted to take off the top layer. I ended up destroying the hat so before going to Jungle beach in Unawatura I went back to the same guy and bought the same hat, but this time I bargained him down to 200LKR. On the bus I successfully cut off the second layer without destroying it.
Getting to Jungle Beach – UnawatunaAfter getting the hat I went to the bus station. Getting to the Jungle Beach means you first need to get to Unawatuna, which is a short bus ride away from Galle.
I caught bus 373 toward Habaraduwa. I gave him 20LKR and recieved no change.
Unawatuna BeachGetting to Jungle Beach was not the only thing I wanted to do so I got off at Unawatuna Beach (see the map below).

Unawatuna Beach
The Welle Devalaya TempleI walked along the beach and had a look at the Welle Devalaya Temple.

Welle Devalaya Temple
Rocky Coastline to Jungle BeachBehind the temple is a rocky coastline to Jungle Beach. You could try to follow this all the way to the Jungle Beach, but I’ not sure if you’d get stuck somewhere along the way. Also, it would take me about 3-5 times as long.

Behind the temple is this Rocky Coastline which can potentially lead you all the way to Jungle Beach.. assuming you don’t get stuck on the way
I did about 40 minutes worth, which only got me about a fifth of the way, and then cut into the road via a guesthouse, which looked amazing. (and expensive).
Note: I think if I had done the whole thing by path without stopping, and just casually strolling, it would have taken about 40 minutes for the whole thing… just to give you an idea of the length of the the walk.
Rock BeachFrom there I followed the signs for getting to Jungle Beach until I got to the rock beach, which was very peaceful since no-one else was there. Sorry for the bad picture, but someone did come along and I wasn’t feeling sociable so I bailed and just took a quick snap on my way out.

A rushed picture of the Rock Beach, which does have the ocean… just not in this picture
Japanese Peace PagodaBefore getting to the Jungle Beach I decided to have a look at the Japanese Peace Pagoda which was nice. I learnt some stuff about Buddha from the signs.

Japanese Peace Pagoda.
Upon my exit from the Japanese Peace Pagoda in Unawatuna the caretaker invited me into the temple part. There were clear sign saying no pictures, but he insisted I take one, so here it is.

The temple at the Japanese Peace Pagoda
I donated 100LKR then continued to Jungle Beach
Finally at Jungle BeachI was expecting a secluded beach with not many people. Boy was I mistaken.

Jungle Beach – this is the second beach. The first was very crowded
I went to the second beach which was less crowded and then went for a well deserved swim.

Map of Unawatuna
Getting Back to Galle From Jungle BeachBehind the second beach is some stairs. Follow them all the way up and turn left at the road, which will lead you to the main road. Turn left to the bus stop.
Getting back to Galle from Jungle Beach cost 15LKR.
When I got back to Galle I went back to the bakery from yesterday and got this bad boy for 80LKR, and another egg sandwich for breakfast tomorrow which cost 60LKR, then back to my accommodation for a little nap.

Egg and sausage sandwich from that bakery I found yesterday
I did a day trip to Jungle Beach from Galle, but there are a lot of accommodation choices. I’m sure you can find something fairly cheap if you get away from the beach a bit, or you can book ahead.
Experiencing KFC in Sri LankaSomething you don’t see much of in Sri Lanka is American fast food. I didn’t notice any in Colombo, and only saw one pizza hut and a KFC in Kandy. In Galle there is a KFC.
I’m not a fan of fast food in general, but it is always interesting to see what is on the menu in different countries. Also, I hadn’t eaten western food in a while and sometimes a greasy burger hits the spot, unfortunately that did not happen for me while experiencing KFC in Sri Lanka.
I ended up getting a Chicken Biryani with an onion samba and a 7up… except he gave me cola. I did order a small burger, but they didn’t have the one I wanted which was just as well because what I ordered was enough.

The Jungle beach itself was a bit of a let down, but all the stuff I seen/did while getting to Jungle Beach was awesome. It is true that often the journey is better than the destination… or something like that.

Exploring Galle – Sri Lanka Day 10
This post includes exploring Galle, getting from Matara to Galle by bus, a Galle accommodation review, Galle Fort review, where to get stuff repaired in Galle (bags, shoes etc) and a really good bakery in Galle and also provides directions, daily cost summary, other useful information and perhaps also some not so useful personal observations and opinions.
Getting from Matara to Galle by BusGetting from Matara to Galle by bus is a painless single bus ride. From the Matara bus station I caught bus #350 to Galle. It took a couple of hours and cost 60LKR. If you have big baggage you can put it at the front of the bus.
Galle Accommodation Review – Suwa SiriOnce I arrived in Galle I did a circle of the block away from the Fort to find some cheaper accommodation. I stumbled across the Suwa Siri. Not really a hotel, but not a guesthouse either. I guess it is closer to a hotel. Anyway, the owner is very nice (as are most Sri Lankans) and I bargained a room down to 1800LKR/night with a private bathroom. He also has rooms with shared bathrooms for 1500LKR.
No hot water, but who needs it in Sri Lanka. Decent internet, mosqito nets, small balcony, fan, clean, good security and good location.
This Galle Accommodation review was for a hotel/guesthouse that is not on any booking sites. If you want to be safe, you can book ahead your accommodation in Galle.
Getting to Suwa SiriTo get to Suwa Siri accommodation in Galle from the bus station first walk east until you get to Wakwella Rd, which is a main road about 100 meters or so away from the bus station.
Tuen left (north) on Wakwella until you see the sign for Suwa Siri which is on the right, just after the Co-op Hosptial (which is on the left). Go up the little road.

Map of Galle
Exploring GalleAfter settling in I went for a walk around exploring Galle. I checked out the train station to suss where to go to next (decided on Benota), bought some small eats for lunch and also purchased a bucket hat for 300LKR (I didn’t bargain).

Surprise.. it’s filled with curry. It was a sphere but I squashed it.
I had left my cap back in Australia. Bucket hats are better. They offer more protection and scrunch down more for packing.

Some type of savoury cookie which I did not like very much
Galle Fort ReviewCost: Free
After exploring Galle for a little bit I ended up at Galle Fort, which brings me to this Galle Fort Review.

Watching the cricket from the top of Galle Fort
You can walk along the walls for free and there are some small beaches along the way. Inside the streets are cafe’s restuarants, souvenier shops etc.

Inside Galle Fort – I think they are taking the grass
I spent an hour or 2 there.

Coastal view from the walls of Galle Fort
Getting to Galle FortGalle Fort is south of the bus and train stations and the big clock can not be missed. Just walk to it. See the map above.
Where to Get Stuff Repaired in Galle (Bags, Shoes etc)On the way to Galle Fort I came across a street that seems to be the place to get stuff repaired in Galle. I approached the bag mender and got him to sew the end of my cotton bed-sheet which I had acquired from Kandy, so the bit I cut would stop fraying. He only charged me 50LKR and was a good guy, so I decided to let him fix my bag also. He charged me 80LKR to put new buckles on it and did it in about 5 minutes.
Right next to him was a guy fixing shoes. He seemed to know what he was doing. If I needed shoes fixed that’s who I’d go to.
The location of this guy is also on the map above.
A Really Good Bakery in GalleAfter Galle Fort I continued exploring Galle and went on the hunt for fruit and an egg sandwich for tomorrow morning (my staple breakfast in Sri Lanka). I came across this really good bakery in Galle. I was impressed by it so I thought I’d give it a special mention. Better then any other bakery I’ve seen in Sri Lanka, and well priced.
Location is also on the map above.
I didn’t have so much luck with fruit. I went to a guy on the street who tried to charge me 300LKR for 6 small oranges. I got him down to 240 and reluctantly paid. I let him know that I know he is cheating me but paid anyway.. I should have just walked away. Next to the bus station is a lady selling them for 20LKR a piece. From now on, 3 for 100 is the max I will pay.
Had chicken fried rice for dinner from a place near my accommodation which cost 200LKR and was pretty good.

Today was really hot so I am glad I got my bucket hat while exploring Galle. This is a busy city and I’m sure there is a fair bit to do here. I’m undecided how long I will stay in Galle for yet, but I’ll suss it out tomorrow.

Star Fort Matara Review – Sri Lanka Day 9
This post includes a Star Fort Matara Review, more exploration of Matara and also provides directions, daily cost summary, other useful information, and perhaps also some not so useful personal observations and opinions.
Star Fort Matara ReviewCost: Donation
This Star Fort Matara review is going to be pretty short because the fort itself is not very big.
I think it was a Dutch Fort. Inside it is a small museum with some artifacts.

Entrance to Star Fort
A volunteer begins to follow you and tells you about some of the things. I don’t really like being followed around but I felt rude to tell her to go away.
Basically she just told me what was already on the signs.
At the end they request a donation. I gave 100LKR.
Outside in the moat there was a crocodile.

Crocodile in the moat of Star Fort… also found in the river
Getting to the Star FortSince Matara is fairly small, getting to the Star Fort is not a problem.
It is just over the bridge that leads into town.

Map of Matara with the Forts Marked
More Exploration of MataraI already explored Matara quite a bit yesterday, but I had a whole day to kill so I did a little more exploration of Matara.
I went to the market…

Small market in Matara
… and also to the other Fort which is located across the road form the bus station.. just look for the clock, which still works and holds correct time.

Although all I really did today was the Star Fort Review Matara I had a pretty good day… nice and relaxed. There’s lots of little beach towns from here to Galle, but I’m skipping them and going straight to Galle.
