He is love-smacked Shadrack, a boy doped to the gills. She is a big lusty bird, with a claw-footed clutch. Has badass Shad The Beast finally met his match? How wild will this bliss be?

With his family reunion around the bend, Shad The Beast runs a high fever. He’s a bad boy whose sweet baby leaves him blubbering, sad, and blue. Well, what the hell. Sometimes a body seeks sexual healing. Sexual healing of the faith healing kind.

Armed with drugs and explosives, Shad escapes his trailer park, in search of his Uncle O. A deranged and horny detour leads our boy to ripe melons, cockeyes of scripture, and other coots in fruitful cahoots.

Must-See TV: Charlie Rich Burns Himself Alive and Laughs while doing it…

Charlie Rich. Sun Records veteran, discovered by the great Sam Phillips.

There are a few dozen epic tragedies and comic oprys in the saga that was Charlie Rich. For painful decades his marriage and private life were Shakespearean. Most of the mainstream public only began paying attention after Rich sold his soul and had to give up his magnificent jazz-and-blues-infused piano to finally make it big in the Nashville music bidness, singing slick pop ballads.

Want a taste of the aching and heartfelt blues inside him? Give a listen to his nakedly beautiful demo recording of Feel Like Going Home (NOT the overproduced studio release), with just Charlie and his beloved piano singing his own composition. The man was the real thing.

I was sitting outside Savannah, Georgia, watching the 1975 Country Music Awards broadcast go down that night and have never forgotten this national media moment, soon buried in some vault until now. It was rambling, delicious, and everything I love about watching the structures of the establishment get upended by one countrified incorrigible rebel, locked and loaded on pills and a bottle. Yes, I do love it so. It’s the rockabilly in me. I can’t help myself.

And neither could Charlie Rich.

(*Don’t overlook that lit cigarette in Glenn Campbell’s hand. Truly different times.)

The New Thornhorn Story! = ORPHAN HOME

Under a hot Savannah sun, with an odd orphan named Spooner, a boat carries a bluegrass picker named Brass up the river. Yes, upriver, a sleepy and most peculiar island plantation lies in wait for Glenn Brass. There, he will sit down to dinner. And Brass will pass the cornbread to ghosts of James Brown, Martin Luther King, and one impossible pickpocket. Then in will waltz the late Gary Cooper.

Up the river, on The Island, the old folks on the old homestead, they ain’t what they used to be. And strange things unseen will kill all that is left of Glenn Brass’s hunger.

Another comic and macabre day spent with Thornhorn visitations.

Orphan Home is the newest short story from Randy Thornhorn, author of The Kestrel Waters.
