Plague!

June bugs! They’re having a rampant year, in the mornings our lawn is filled with them bumbling about. They get in the washing, I had one down my neck this morning! The dog has eaten a couple but I don’t think they’re tasty. The birds don’t seem to be feeding on them either. It will only be for a couple of weeks they’re around. I’m hoping there will be a similar plague of fireflies later in the summer!

Frustration!

At this time of the year, the cows are taken up to the meadows or alms for their summer grazing. It has always made me chuckle at them looking over the top of the transporters. It’s like they’re saying, whooppee, holiday, after all winter in a barn. Although that barn must be warm and they are fed wonderful hay and silage!

For thirteen years I haven’t succeeded in getting a good shot of this. This morning, there were loads of trailers on the move as the alms are officially opened. I was out with Swingle and saw a brilliant one heading along the road; lots of heads hanging over the top. I had my camera with me, and just as they got to us, the local siren went off. Swingle began to howl, sat in the middle of the road, and I had to grab her in case of cars. Results attached!

We won’t be here next year, so I’ll have to keep my camera alert!

How’s your lockdown going?

In our little part of Austria, we have been virus free for several weeks, apart from someone who had a relapse for a couple of days. The whole Lungau is now clear. We have been very good about keeping to ourselves, although I think some of the neighbours stretched what was meant as family.

We all have to wear masks in shops and pay behind plexi screens. My little library will open on Monday, we spent a lot of the time doing an inventory and were shocked at how many missing books there appeared to be. Now we think there has been a problem in the numbering system, so that will account for a lot!

Restaurants are opening, will be so nice to go out for out Wedding anniversary in a couple of weeks. Of course, all our plans to move back to the UK are on hold and we think we might just forget about it until next year. But we had a viewing from a local family, who knows?

We have been really blessed with online services with our church in the UK, but it isn’t the same without a congregation! But to have teaching in English is a pure joy! Our little church here meets in the chapel of the local Old People’s home, we wont get in there for a while!

How’s your lock down going?

Bird Cherry (Prunus padus)

We had one of these trees in our first house at Little Marsh near Beaulieu. Its scent when flowering is amazing, heavy and a bit peppery. It takes me back every time to when our kids were small and how they played in that garden. There’s lots of these trees in this part of the Lungau and it seems this year is their turn for heavy flowering. Here are some piccies I took today. Have you got some great flowering trees where you are?

The old road to Bundschuh

This was the old road down from the mining area from Schonfeld to the furnace at Bundschuh, and then on towards Thomatal and Ramingstein. There’s also a lost castle there too. Boy, was the river full of melt water loud. There was a lot of damage from the rain and snow last autumn too. It was simply good to get back in the woods and walk by the river.

Smiling with the eyes

Here in Austria, things are starting to get back to normal as we can now shop if we wear masks and keep our distances. You have to have a trolley each in bigger supermarkets, and some shops restrict how many can be in at once.

As I trotted around this week lots of people said Hi and I had trouble when I didn’t recognise the voice. I even heard someone say, ‘Is that really you?’

Then it struck me, do people know that I’m smiling at them from behind the mask? Duh moment! So now I make a point of smiling with my eyes, consciously raising my cheeks so my eyes change. Funny how we only think of smiling with the mouth. Guess after this I’ll have more wrinkles!
