Fast is good

Well, it all kicks off officially tomorrow, although there were some qualifying events today. The blue riband event – the men’s downhill – is on Sunday, with the ladies’ downhill on Wednesday 12th. I’ve never been brave enough to race pure downhill – it takes a special kind of person to do that, but I’ve […]

Preparation is everything

I saw footage in the news today of some of the athletes arriving at Sochi for the Winter Olympics. They had alot of kit with them. Which is quite reassuring, in light of today’s quote – hopefully the weather and their equipment won’t cause any issues in their hunt for medals!

Life, fully lived

Life, fully lived – I think any sport can make you feel like this. I watched the final of the reality TV winter sports series, “The Jump” last night. I’ve caught about 3 episodes of this and enjoyed watching the participants try various winter sports. For once I’d actually heard of a few of the […]

Leap of faith

I think all skiers know about the inevitability of gravity… but it was the words ‘leap of faith’ that jumped out at me today. I read a post recently by an independently-published author (like me) who was talking about her journey into publishing, and it resonated with me. Like her, I decided to publish independently […]

Faster, higher, stronger

In yesterday’s post I talked about a run off the Glas Maol in Glenshee, and said “[I] was absolutely screaming along doing huge wide GS turns, so fast that I remember thinking, ‘If I fall over at this speed I’ll probably kill myself!’ (this was in the days before helmets)” As most skiers, I’ve had […]

To boldly go…

…and other split infinitives (so I was told by my English teacher at school). Today’s meme, for 6 days to go till the Winter Olympics, is: “Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail“. I said yesterday that I’d had some sublime moments when […]

How does it feel to ski?

“To ski is to fly without actually leaving the ground” I’ve had some sublime moments when skiing. Perhaps you have too, depending on your sport. Moments when it all comes together, almost magically – weather, technique, terrain, mental awareness – and things just seem perfect. In particular I remember a couple of times at Cairngorm […]

Winter Olympics coming soon!

I’m getting excited and inspired by all the adverts and stories about the 2014 Winter Olympics, which starts on 7th February in Sochi. So inspired, in fact, that I’ve designed some ‘memes’ to link my books and the Olympics. This is for 10 days to go: What d’you think?
