Texas Sheet Cake and Texas Eats: The New Lone Star Heritage Cookbook GIVEAWAY!!!

Words can not describe how good this cake is.  If you love sweet chocolate, this is the best poured frosting recipe to get that sweet taste.  This cake is made in a jelly roll pan so it is perfect for summer picnics.  You can add nuts on top or sprinkles like I did to showcase the holiday.  Once people have this cake they will ask for it all the time, so get all your sprinkles out for the holidays they will get a lot of use with this recipe.

TEXAS SHEET CAKE 

For the cake

2 sticks butter

1 cup water

4 tablespoons baking cocoa 

In a medium to large sauce pan, mix butter, water and cocoa.  (I use a whisk to mix)

Bring to a boil.  Remove from heat and add 

2 cups granulated sugar

2 cups flour

Beat in 2 eggs

½ cup sour cream, (I used light)

1 teaspoon baking soda

 

Pre-heat oven to 375 degrees 

Pour cake batter into greased jelly roll pan

Bake 20-22 minutes.

 

When cake is done, remove from oven and start the frosting.

 

For the frosting  

In a medium sauce pan bring to boil

1 stick butter

6 tablespoons milk

Once butter is melted & it comes to  boil, remove from heat.

Add 4 tablespoons cocoa, whisk to incorporate

Add 1 teaspoon vanilla and

1 pound of confectioner sugar.

Whisk until smooth.  The frosting will be runny, but it should not be to runny, add more sugar if you feel it should be thicker.

But it should be thin enough that when you pour it on the cake it will spread out evenly almost by itself.

 

While cake is still hot, pour warmn frosting over the cake.  Work fast to smooth it, it dries fast.

Before the cake frosting dries, now is the time to add a decoration either sprinkles, chopped pecans or walnuts.  I use sprinkles. 

Let cool and slice to eat.
