THE GIRL IN BLACK by Kathy Lauren Miller – A REVIEW

[image error]“The Girl in Black” by Kathy Lauren Miller is a hauntingly taut murder mystery as well as an awesome page-turner! The mystery begins with high school senior, Kate Mckenna who happens to live in an old Victorian manor that is also the Mckenna Memorial Funeral Home. Her father, Dr. Brendan Mckenna, happens to be the county’s Chief Medical Examiner. Shy Kate, whose social life as always been nearly non-existent until she is thrust into the limelight when the promiscuous prom queen, Ashley is found tortured and murdered.

Accusations run rampant in Kate’s High School concerning several male students that were involved with Ashley. To make matters worse, Ashley’s remains now reside at the funeral home where Kate lives. Kate and her best friend Cooper, a computer nerd, and Kate’s unattainable heartthrob, handsome Shane, all become involved in Ashley’s murder. Suddenly, Kate finds herself in the cross hairs of the sadistic killer and the vengeful ghost of Ashley, the murdered prom queen. What happens next is beyond Kate’s worse nightmare. The Girl in Black is a fascinating and terrifying murder mystery that will keep you guessing until the end. I highly recommend this book. (less)

Review: Garrett’s Bones, by K. D. Dowdell 4 of 5 stars

Didi Oviatt is a premier book reviewer, blogger, and author. I thank her for taking a chance with a totally unknown author like me. Didi’s astute, in-depth, and beautifully written review, shows her ability to reveal expertly, the shaft from the grain of a written work with great clarity, insight and care. K D Dowdall

MY REVIEW:

Anna and Garrett, the main characters in Garrett’s Bones, live far from ordinary teenage lives. As best friends, they’re adventurous and in many ways completely fearless in the face of danger. Their characters are very well written and developed. Also, I’ve really got to hand it to K. D. Dowdall in her ability to draw such a beautiful picture in setting. She is able to tie such a wide variety of commendable characteristics together, and she does it seemingly effortlessly. Garrett’s Bones is overflowing with rich culture of past and present, along with absolutely gorgeous wooded areas. The scenery in this book is to die for! Beautiful! This isn’t your average haunted forest story. It’s unique and completely different from anything I’ve ever read.

When a young girl goes missing, Anna and Garrett find themselves on a quest to find her. Being familiar with the forest grounds as…

A Brief Overview of the Publishing Process (If You Want To Try Traditional Publishing)

I just had to reblog this very informative post by Ruth Ann Nordin; it is an eye-opener to anyone considering traditional publishing. https://selfpubauthors.com/2017/05/05/a-brief-overview-of-the-publishing-process-if-you-want-to-try-traditional-publishing/#like-9128

Self-Published Authors Helping Other Authors

Someone asked me about traditional publishing a while back, and I’m just now getting around to writing this post.  (I’m sorry for the delay in getting to this post.  I have to be in the mood to write a blog post or else it’s going to turn out flat.)

Now, I’m not going into the specifics because each publishing company has their own way of doing things.  This is just a broad overview of what I gathered from my research over the years.  If anyone has more information they would like to add, please do!  (Be sure to read the comments.  There might be better information there than what I can provide.)

A quick note: a reputable publisher will never take money from you.  Money should flow to the author, not from the author.  If a publisher wants your money, run away.

Humanitarian love

I love this poem. It says everything that is important for humanity. via https://fauxcroft.com/2017/04/29/humanitarian-love

fauxcroft

Love for one,

And love for all,

Let it be unconditional,

Let it loose and let it thrive

Let it come from heart and mind,

Keep the heart and mind always open,

Welcome in the light for all,

Reject hate and turn away from judgement,

Be benevolent in all you say and do,

For we are one and we are united

The love for all humanity is our call.

A Review of Maledicus by Author Charles F. French

Maledicus is sure to be a literary horror classic. I was amazed to find that this story was not at all what I thought it would be. In this telling of good vs. evil, of bravery and self-sacrifice, we see a portrayal of the most constant of human struggles that death often defies through sheer force of will and therein lies the deeper meaning that brought this novel to life by the author, Charles F. French.   Concurrently with the demonic theme is a well-thought out philosophical approach to horror, wrapped in an evocative story that will capture your fear and terrify you. This story is abundant with tantalizing details, unforgettable characters, and words that will not only touch your heart and mind, but also take your breath away. It is a completely riveting story with suspense, mystery, horror, bravery, and a great love that transcends time.  You will not be able to forget this one. It will haunt you. And, when you read it, you will know why.  Available now on Amazon.com!

Masterful Writing Tips

write-your-story-images Weiland’s Masterful Writing Tips

Hook: Start in the middle of some type of interaction within environment, statement, or internal angst to provoke reader curiosity.

Characteristic Moment: Reveal/show a personality trait of the Protagonist.

Setting Description of Scene: Start broadly, and then zoom in.

Symbolism: Small details set story’s tone and foreshadows its course.

The World Protagonist Inhabits: demonstrate character’s interior and exterior world.

Back Story: Intersperse with dialogue, don’t dump back story in long paragraphs in chapter

The Premise of Story: Present the Dramatic Question early on, involving the moral foundation, the impetus that drives the story forward.

Physical Actions: The physical movements of characters interspersed throughout dialogue increases depth of character traits.

Protagonist’s Belief: Once Dramatic Question is identified, writer presents obstacles for protagonist until she/he can relinquish belief/misconception and meet deepest needs.

Extraordinary Factor: What makes the Protagonist important? How at odds is protagonist in his/her world with others that creates friction, tension, and thus the central conflict of story premise.
