Hey Woman, thoda adjust karlo
I feel withered thinking of all those moments my mother had to ‘Thoda (little) Adjust”. I learnt lessons in hard ways to understand the meaning of ‘little’ through travels and observations. One such incident was, I was taking a train to Vapi, a city in Valsad. I boarded a train with few passengers and several got in as the train moved from one station to the other. At a few stations like Vasai, Virar the number of people who got into the reservation compartment were more than the seats available. I saw a lady from a lower berth negotiating a young boy from a middle berth not to sleep as she wanted to sit. He seemed non-negotiable in spite of her attention from fellow passengers. I thought it’s fairly right for every passenger to choose : either to sit or sleep. However, the design of railway coaches limits these options in sleeper coaches. If one chooses to sleep, the person in the lower and upper berth has to adjust. Hence I mostly opt for upper berth.
I wasn’t concerned about this adjustment. But something else shook me in a moment as we crossed Virar station. As I returned from the wash room witnessed a man occupying my upper berth seat. I asked him for his ticket to check if one of us was wrongly occupied. He kept arguing that he is getting down at the next station that’s an hour away. I kept asking for his ticket. I told him either you move out of the berth otherwise I will complain to TC and if required will inform the police. He realised I am a tough nut to negotiate. I thought this is the end of such ‘adjustment’ requests. Two women in the next berth were having hell out of arguments with the mob. I am using mob to indicate men who were trying to put those two women down through their yelling. I am glad two women doubled their voices. It included foul language that my ears weren’t prepared to hear! Two woman were right to ask passengers without reservations to get down and move to the unreserved compartments. Humans are complicated and men are complicated too! I witnessed the mob changing their voice asking two women to behave like ‘women’. We have stereotyped genders and expectations are set accordingly!
I am not in for the foul language but the mob wouldn’t have understood other forms perhaps. If those men believe to behave like ‘gentlemen’, they shouldn’t have got into reservation compartments. If this is unacceptable, why ask someone to be gentle or to adjust? Unfortunately, the people in the system should help to make the travel experience memorable, not bitter. Plus people should respect one’s itinerary. The Humane side is required at times of crisis but crisis cannot be presented as everyday.
I have instincts for such requests from passengers. I have denied at times and accepted at times to help the passengers through a dialogue with TC. I might not be able to give a medal to those two women or anyone who fought to fix the issues but would definitely applause for not ‘adjusting’ for the wrong ask!
Sometimes such wonderful messages often get missed. I am not sure why the editor film had to cut this wonderful message?
