Recipe for a New Year
Reblogged from The Vampire Diet:
My grandparents always had saurkraut and kilbasa on New Years day for luck.
Rather than let us kids think of something as lucky (anything not "God" or in any way outside of her religion, even the idea of 'luck', was unthinkable to dear old mom) the story was that they made sourkrout and kilbasa not for luck or from any older tradition - but because it was what Grandmother and Grandad had their first New Year's Day together, after being married in 1930s Appalachia where they were just happy to have the meat.

Healing From Within (The Vampire Diet explained)
Reblogged from The Vampire Diet:
The TV was playing in the background while I've been spring cleaning the blogs. One of the ads was for a weight loss plan...big surprise this time of year, eh? It talked about their approach to losing pounds and how you could "get support in person or online".
I wonder if that doesn't sometimes cause as many problems as it solves.

Vegan Truffles
Reblogged from The Vampire Diet:
Inspired by Gale Gand's Chocolate 'tootsie' recipe on foodnetwork.com
12 oz package of Trader Joe's or other vegan semisweet chocolate chips
1/3 cups light corn syrup
2 Tbs instant coffee
1/4 cup hot water
1 tsp vanilla extract
Nonpariels, or candy sprinkles or chia seeds
Dissolve instant coffee in the hot water and set aside. In microwaveble bowl: melt chocolate chips in 30 second interveal stirring after each 30 seconds until chips are melted and smooth.
From my other other blog, The Vampire Diet. It may be vegan, but it most definitely is not a health food. I made it for a holiday celebration with my BFF, "The Vegan Vampirette".
New Years Reading 2014: The Cards
Reblogged from Modern Oracle Tarot:
In the "Four Seasons" layout, each card is an idea or theme for each of the next four seasons to come, no matter which point in the circle of the year the reading occurs. It is appropriate for any meaningful occasion that tends to make us look forward: Holidays, New Year, birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, anything. Since it is now winter, the first card will be assigned to the next season, spring and so on.

New Years Reading 2014 : Introduction
Reblogged from Modern Oracle Tarot:
If you have access to it, I hope you will watch "The Science of Doctor Who" with Professor Brian Cox. I know - part of you might be thinking it is fiction, like the Doctor Who TV show, but it isn't. It is Professor Cox (who is extremely cool by the way - the Carl Sagan of my generation in my opinion, right up there with Niel DeGrasse Tyson and Micheo Kaku) explaining the real-life science behind time and time travel.

Tao Tuesday – Chapter 29
Every Tuesday on www.taotechingdaily.com Amy Putkonin invites bloggers to comment on a different chapter of her version (in my opinion one of the best versions going) of the Tao Te Ching. Many thanks to Amy for sharing this project with the world. This week:
Chapter 29
One who wishes to control the world
and act with force upon it will not succeed.
The world is a sacred vessel
and cannot be controlled.
For trying to control it, one destroys it.
For trying to hold it, one loses it.
There is a time for leading,
and a time to follow.
There is a time to breath in,
and a time to breath out.
A time to be strong,
and a time to be weak.
A time to overcome,
and a time to fail.
The sage abandons all excess,
avoids extravagance,
and rejects indulgence.

This reminds me of a couple of things. One is the old adage “go with the flow”. There are times to take a stand, but those seem less frequent than times to “allow” things to unfold naturally. If you take Nature’s lead, then you get farther with a better end result. Think of wading in a stream with a current…you get farther, faster, easier walking downstream with the current than you do fighting your way upstream.
Diane Morgan associates this idea of “actionless action” (it takes no extra action to get the extra distance…it happens naturally by choosing to go with the flow instead of against it) and the Tarot card 2 of Wands.
Still, we have free choice. It is a choice whether to flow or to fight. There are times for both, although flowing is frequently the better choice, sometimes the tough walk upstream is necessary, the right thing to do. There is a time for both, the trick is knowing when to do what.
Actionless action is a good place to start in that knowing. Observing still gets something done: learning. Learning, though outwardly actionless, still gets something done. With that learning we know when to act, and when to allow. Then all is done with least damage to ourselves and others…the “sacred vessel” in this chapter doesn’t get accidentally damaged by thrashing around and needless doing.

Watch this space
I hope to be catching up on a few things…namely Tao Tuesdays…once the last bits of holiday busy-ness wraps up over the next couple of days. Like Rachel Maddow so often says…watch this space.
Have a great weekend everyone!

Can I say ‘I told you so’?
I have to admit, I love it when “science” proves Natural and Holistic health to have been right all along. Knowing they will probably take credit for the “discovery”, I take every opportunity to say “I told you so” that mainstream science and news gives me. You might call it a character flaw. I call it entertainment.
Anyway…remember back in April when I was ‘of two minds‘ about an antibacterial soap sample I’d been given because of the many down sides to antibacterial soaps in general?
Check out this new report:

I told you so.
So go wash your hands…it will drown the germs (aka mechanically remove them) with regular soap and water just fine. And smell better in the process too, I’d guess.
