Dancing With the Gull by Sue London
Revenge of the Wallflowers Book 14

Lady Penelope Barshaw is known as a shy, sweet girl among the ton. She’s perfectly happy fading into the background of balls and supper parties because Society makes her feel quite awkward. Her reticence is disturbed, however, as she sees a number of viragos lined up to entrap a gentleman.

Lord Henry Greer, Henny to his friends, is known as a capital chap. He stays close to his best friends, however, because the vagaries of Society are a mystery to him. Nothing ever works quite the way it is supposed to, and now that his parents expect him to marry, he finds it impossible to determine a suitable wife.

Excerpt

Yet again, Penelope found herself overhearing conversations she would rather not.

“I’ve heard that he’s quite dim,” the first voice said.

“Good,” the second said, her voice laced with humor. “He’ll be dim enough that he won’t notice me spending all of that lovely money.”

The first snorted. “His friends keep a keen eye on him, you might not find that as easy as you suspect. Further, his mother is not likely to think well of a girl hoping to elevate herself.”

“She’s never in Town,” the second said breezily. “What can she do once her boy is married?”

At that the first lady gave a sardonic chuckle. “Don’t forget that Lord Sharpe, who is ever in his shadow, is not precisely polite when warning off a woman.”

The second huffed. “Lud, Cissy, you could make a vicar swear! Let me dream.”

Penelope was quite certain who the voices belonged to, and who they were talking about. She turned to Mary and Cissy with a viciously sweet smile. “Miss Coates! Miss Williams! How delightful to see you here. I couldn’t help overhearing your conversation. Whoever could you be referring to?”

The two young women looked stunned, as people often did when Penelope decided to engage with them. Her mother described her mode of discourse at such times as ‘overbearingly charming’, rather a bit like the wolf in Red Riding Hood. Her mother was forever lecturing her that she should learn to do things by halves. Neither too quiet, nor too loud. Neither retiring, nor overbearing. The good Lord knew that if she could, she would. It would, however, not be in this lifetime, and certainly not to dangle lures for a husband.

Pen snapped out her pleated fan and fluttered it, looking over the men in attendance. “Hmm, dim. Could it be Lord Vance perhaps? Oh, wait, Lord Barnes. I could quite see you with Lord Barnes, Miss Coates. You would suit.” The man’s naturally protruding eyes and small mouth made him look like a perpetually surprised fish, which was precisely the expression Miss Coates herself had right now.

“L-lady Penelope,” Miss Coates stuttered. Mary Coates always stuttered when upset, how could Pen have forgotten? It was so uncommonly rare for Penelope to say anything, much less anything harsh, that of course it was surprising to the little viper. The girl blushed bright red and hid behind her fan as her more stalwart friend stepped in front of her.

“Lady Penelope, how very pleasing to see you.”

“You’re just now seeing me? I’m sure it was your nearsightedness again. I’ve been right over there all evening,” she said, blithely waving at a small chair.

Penelope was exhibiting the sort of behavior that gave her mother the vapors, but really! People had been chattering all night about Lord Greer receiving an inheritance, and they had no right. It wasn’t theirs to covet. And all the talk of trying to manipulate him out of it! They should be ashamed of themselves. He wasn’t dim. She couldn’t put her finger on quite what she thought he was, but he wasn’t stupid. What time she’d spent in his company, she’d always found him kind and excruciatingly polite. He liked both horses and dogs, which she thought spoke quite well of him. His two best friends were the sort of foolish dandies that her mother pushed her at, of the stripe that gave her a headache. Lord Greer himself was simply nice, which of course the termagants of the ton assumed meant he was a foolish gull, ripe for their picking. Being deferential and pleasant was likely his greatest danger, accidentally allowing one of these biddies to entrap him.

EXCERPT:

I wish I had a booty call on speed dial.

Amanda hummed, her bright pink lips shining in the low light, and her crystal blue eyes narrowed. “Want to go out and find a big dick to satisfy your craving?”

Emily gasped and dramatically fluttered her thick black lashes, but I burst out laughing. My best friend knew me inside and out. It had been years since I had any satisfying manly action. “I would even take a small, skillful one.” I giggled. “Or we could go shopping for something where I can choose the size.”

Amanda snorted. “Last time we went shopping, you bought a toy that made your pussy itch for weeks.”

“I’m cursed,” I breathed.

“You’re not cursed. One-night stands don’t agree with you; you need more. Someone you’ll see often, who can learn every intricate instruction of your body,” Emily said with a finger raised.

“Instruction of my body?” I gritted my teeth. “You make it sound like I’m a complicated spaceship that needs an engineer to operate.”

“You are,” Amanda stated.

“Fuck you, Mandy.”

“I would if I wasn’t married.” She laughed.

I snorted. Amanda and Nicole had had an on-and-off relationship since college. They had tied the knot after a decade of breaking up and reconciling. It was a joyous occasion to witness Amanda finally committing to Nicole after years of being scared to get married.

“Do you think I’m that complicated?”

The question slipped out of my mouth before I sealed my lips. Silence answered me, and damn it be, for shame rose in my gut. I missed having a man the most during those times, my horny times. Since my husband’s death, I hadn’t found a man who brought me to climax.

Not a single one.

Even though I was open and communicative in the bedroom, I seemed to lack something… or had too much of it? I didn’t see myself as hard to please, but maybe I was wrong.

“Babe, it’s not like that,” Amanda responded, but I didn’t believe her.

Shame poured over me like acid rain, and I choked back a sob.

I was complicated.

“Want to go out somewhere new and exciting?” Emily suggested, her radiant smile coating my discomfort with sweetness.

“I heard about a place in Albany called The Sultry Lounge where one might stumble across a DTF gentleman,” Amanda added.

I sighed and weaved my fingers through my hair, massaging my scalp.

I’ll have to go to his place, though. “Okay. Let’s find me some spice for tonight!” I blurted.

Looking at myself in the tiny mirror of my compact, I brushed my hair, put on some glossy lipstick, added a touch of mascara, and smiled. I might be as complicated as a spaceship, but I was a damn fine one. A flirty kiss to my reflection later, we were on our way to The Sultry Lounge.

Author Bio:

I’m Elsa Jacobs, an indie author of contemporary romance and romantic suspense/thriller. I write unique love stories with a substantial amount of twists, turns, and spices.

Let me tell you how it all started. A few years back, I was battling brutal insomnia that just wouldn’t quit. Nights were a blur of characters and plots swirling around in my head, refusing to let me catch some shut-eye. It was maddening. Writing became my escape hatch—I had to get these stories out of my head.

In less than a year, I wrote four drafts, all because I needed an outlet for the chaos that was keeping me up at night. Publishing wasn’t even on my radar; I just needed some peace of mind. But then, something unexpected happened. I sent a chapter to an editor, not really expecting much to come of it.

But instead of a brush-off, I found myself teaming up with that editor to bring my first novel to life.

It was a game-changer. That’s when I decided to take the plunge and share the rest of my drafts, bit by bit, with the world.

My stories might have been born out of sleepless nights, but they’ve become my sanctuary, and I hope they become yours too.

Cheers,

Elsa.

The Wallflower Identity by Dawn Brower release day with excerpt

The Wallflower Identity: Lady Be Vengeful by Dawn Brower

Lilah Stevens first season was the worst a lady could ever have. She hadn’t been a mere wallflower, she’d been the Wallflower. The one that had ended up with her name on everyone lips and a ruined reputation. Before that fateful day no one had ever noticed her. Afterwards, she couldn’t show her face in society without the whispers being uttered at her mere presence. It had been enough to make anyone run and hide, but she refused to allow him that satisfaction. She would make that infernal viscount rue the day they had ever crossed paths, even if it made her reputation terminally unrepairable.

Henry Collins, the Viscount of Harcrest had always been a consummate rake. He didn’t see any reason to change. He loved his life and it was a grand one. As far as he was concerned, he didn’t have a care in the world, and he liked it that way. He doesn’t pay any attention to rumors, but after that fateful encounter he wonders if perhaps it is time he should. Surely, he couldn’t have done what she suggested. Even he wasn’t that depraved…

Lilah wishes she could once again embrace the identity of a wallflower, a role she used to hate, but that is a past she can never reclaim. But somehow, she starts to wonder if she had it all wrong and it might be enough to lead her to a place she never expected: love.

Excerpt

Lilah headed to the library. She’d been unaware that Lord Harcrest followed close behind her until she reached her destination and found him following her. “What do you want?”

“I thought to hide in the library,” he said, as if that was the most normal thing in the world.

“There aren’t very many places to hide in this room.” She narrowed her gaze. “What are you up to?”

“Me?” He blinked at her with an innocent expression on his face. “I’m playing hide and seek. What game are you playing?”

Lilah sighed. He was incorrigible. He had some scheme planned. She’d wager on it, and likely win. Lilah didn’t like it. Not one bit. “Do as you please. You always seem too anyway.” She did her best to ignore him and went to the nearest shelf. She found a book of sonnets and sat on the settee.

“Are you not going to hide?” he asked her as he moved closer to her.

“Why bother,” she said in a preoccupied tone. Lilah flipped open the book.

He snatched the book from her and flipped it open. “Shakespeare?” Lord Harcrest turned the page. “Not even one of his plays…but poetry?”

“I like poetry,” she said, a little insulted. “What is wrong with poetry?”

“Nothing,” he said, then shrugged. “It just seems too frivolous for you.”

“Lord Harcrest,” she said contemptuously. “You do not know me well enough to make such assumptions.”

He continued to ignore her. Lord Harcrest sat on the settee next to her. “Perhaps I should read one to you. Would you like that?”

“No,” she said a little irritated. “I’d like to read them myself. Quietly.”

“Don’t be silly,” he said in a flippant tone. “Poetry should always be read aloud. That is the only correct way to appreciate them. I think this one especially should be heard.”

Oh, bother… He was going to do this, anyway. Maybe if she allowed it, he would leave her alone. She waved her hand at him. “Then by all means, my lord, impress me.”

He grinned, and it did funny things to her. His smile was devastating to behold. It made her stomach lurch and an unexplained tingling to settle there. “I intend to,” he told her a little too confidently. Then he began to read. Those tingling sensations spread throughout her body. His voice was soothing and seductive at the same time. She felt herself drawing closer to him, and when he spoke the last lines of Shakespeare’s Sonnet Eighteen…Lilah almost sighed in contentment. “So long as men can breathe or eyes can see, so long lives this, and this gives life to thee.”
Lord Harcrest met her gaze. What did this all mean? Why was he being so nice to her?

She cleared her throat. “That was lovely.”

Trina Rockwell here. You know, your favorite TV host from Midwestern Matchmaker?I have a I am without a doubt, the unluckiest dater in the history of the entire world. I’m not even embellishing. In order to keep doing what I love doing—matching midwestern singles, I either need to suck it up and parade my dating life on national television or I need to get married—STAT.

Guess which one I’m putting my money on?

EXCERPT:

I sit down on the deck and take my shoes off. The warm boards feel wonderful on my bare feet. I can visualize myself drinking my morning coffee here every day at sunrise and sitting out and enjoying a glass of wine at the end of the day. If I weren’t so desperate to get out of doing another show with Tom, I’d forget everything to do with men and simply enjoy the summer for myself.

I’m suddenly eager to put my feet into the water, so I stand up and walk down to the end of the pier. Within moments, I’m lost in my reverie and I don’t hear anyone approach before a deeply masculine voice announces, “Hi there, you must be my neighbor.”

I spin around so quickly I almost tip over. Oh. My. Heavens. I’m staring at the glorious-looking Heath Fox. My mouth suddenly goes so dry I can barely ask, “You’re my neighbor?”

His green eyes pop open in recognition as he answers, “Trina Rockwell. Imagine meeting you here.”

Heath and I met at a charity event last year. He was one of the bachelors being auctioned off for the cause—childhood diabetes. One look at him kicked my libido into overdrive and I bid more on him than the next three men received combined—for charity, of course.

“What are you doing here?” I ask this as though inquiring why he’s sunbathing on the moon or why he has fourteen toes on each foot.

“I’m taking the summer off to enjoy myself. How about you?”

“Me? Oh … um … same.” Heath’s and my charity date went spectacularly well, or so I thought, until he kissed me goodnight. After that, he assured me in no uncertain terms that he wasn’t looking to get involved with anyone.

I was offended to the extreme. It’s not like I thought I was buying a relationship with the man, but to end the night by giving me the kiss off—literally—was a bit much.

“Dating anyone?” he wants to know.

“I’m not exactly sure why would you care?” Yeah, I’m still mad, but better keep it passive-aggressive. I’m not a shrew or anything.

He shrugs nonchalantly. “I don’t know. I thought I might have heard from you again after our evening out, but I didn’t.”

You thought you’d hear from me?”

“I thought we had a nice time,” he says.

“Then maybe you should have called.” So I could tell him to take a long walk off a short pier.

“According to the paperwork we signed for the auction, I wasn’t allowed to make first contact after our date. They didn’t want any of the ladies to feel unsafe.” I don’t remember reading that, but it sounds plausible.

“Huh.” I mean, what else can I say? Oh wait, I know. “You made it perfectly clear you weren’t looking for a relationship. I can’t imagine you thought I was clueless enough not to take the hint.”

“I wasn’t looking for a relationship,” he confirms. Then with a smirk that nearly melts my butter, he adds, “Nothing long lasting, anyway.”

KISSING ASPHALT by Delicia Niami with a guest post and giveaway

A Day in The Life of Delicia Niami:

Delicia stands as a beacon of resilience and creativity whose story transcends the pages of her memoir series, ResilientAF. Delicia’s days are evidence that the enduring power of passion, adaptability, and the unwavering pursuit of dreams continue.

In the heart of the Santa Cruz mountains, amidst the scars of the CZU fire, Delicia’s days unfold with purpose and ingenuity. As she meticulously edits the pages of her upcoming memoir, Not My Circus, Delicia pours her heart and soul into ensuring that her stories resonate deeply with her readers. But her talents extend far beyond the realms of writing.

With a newfound passion for woodworking, Delicia breathes new life into the charred remnants of her beloved trees. Each venture, from the cautious beginnings of cutting board experimentation to the audacious leaps into crafting kitchen countertops, reflects her insatiable thirst for knowledge.

In 2020, when her disability began, Delicia set out on a quest to teach herself Spanish by immersing herself in telenovelas with English subtitles. Despite the challenges she faces, she remains undeterred, refusing to let her disability hinder her pursuit of lifelong learning and exploration.

Amidst the tranquil beauty of her home, Delicia finds solace and joy in the company of her three beloved cats. Each feline companion brings a unique warmth and comfort to her life, filling her days with love and companionship.

But amidst this bond, Delicia carries a profound sense of loss. Having recently bid farewell to her cherished companion, Six, on 5/4/24, was more than heartbreaking for her. Delicia and Six were compadres for over 22 years!

Delicia’s property holds a sacred place in her heart. Despite the daunting challenges she has encountered, the arduous journey of building her home on this fire-ravaged land stands as a testament to the strength in both Delicia and the sacred land.

For two years, Delicia has called a 24’ yurt attached to a converted 1976 Greyhound Rambler bus her home. This unconventional dwelling serves as another testament to her resilience and adaptability in the face of adversity.

Her soon to be home is more than just a mere dwelling; it symbolizes hope, resilience, and the unyielding determination to forge a future brimming with love and possibility amidst adversity.

In Delicia’s world, every moment is an opportunity to embrace the beauty of life’s journey, to find solace in the midst of sorrow, and to craft a life filled with love, resilience, and boundless possibility.

Delicia wants the world to know that we are all ResilientAF and that we can make it through anything that life throws our way. Sometimes, we have to do the hard work, but in the end you can always find the light and joy.

KISSING ASPHALT
by Delicia Niami

GENRE:  Memoir

BLURB:

Resilience isn’t inherited. It’s a hard-fought skill forged by our ability to pick up the broken pieces of our past and remake them into something new.

Meet four-year-old Delicia, a poor but carefree child who is about to have her world shattered. Along with her seven-year-old brother Nile, she is kidnapped from her Los Angeles home by her estranged father and taken to Iraq, a foreign world she has never known. This is just the beginning of a string of traumas, hardships, and assaults Delicia will endure throughout her tumultuous childhood.

Now an adult living back in California, Delicia Niami bravely recounts how she survived the unimaginable in her debut memoir. Kissing Asphalt, the first in her memoir trilogy, ResilientAF, grapples with the power of resilience, acceptance, and self-love. She revisits her terrifying past with vulnerability, compassion, and the honesty of a true survivor. Hold hands with Delicia as she faces her childhood scars and learns how to confront her fears, accept her true value and identity, and embrace her unique gifts. It’s a multi-decade roller coaster ride that is the beginning of her liberation, propelling her to live an inspired life and embrace her full human potential—a human potential she knows lives inside everyone, no matter what life has thrown at us.

For anyone who has struggled with childhood trauma, Delicia’s unflinching journey through darkness and back to light will resonate. She has decided to share her story publicly in hopes that it will serve as a guide to the many who have suffered in silence and continue to struggle against the daunting weight imposed by childhood trauma.

Excerpt

The minute our father, Hazim, got us onto Iraqi soil, my mother lost all her parental rights. One moment, we were happy kids playing on the lawn of our San Fernando Valley home, and in the blink of an eye, we were ripped away and taken to a country we knew nothing about. Everything was new. New culture, new rules, new language—no mother, no mother, no mother!

I think my brother understood better than I did the consequences of being in Baghdad, but he was being strong for me. He had to protect his little four-year-old sister from knowing the reality of the situation. We had been kidnapped by our father and taken to another country far, far from home.

Release day for Letters to a Wallflower by Deb Marlowe

Letters to a Wallflower by Deb Marlowe
Revenge of the Wallflowers book 11

Letters.

Miss Helen Crawford had written them to express her adolescent adoration of her brother’s friend, Mr. Benjamin Hargrave. She’d written them to purge her longing, to ease her emotions, so that she would be able to face him without appearing a fool.

She had not written them for him to read.

And yet, he did. Somehow. And worse, he’d shared them with the ton.

Her first Season was ruined. She was mocked, ridiculed, branded a wallflower and left to fade into the background.

Until now. Now she was ready to dazzle them all. To show them what they’d been missing. And then she would reject them all, as they had done to her.

It was going swimmingly. Until someone began to write letters to her.

And if she didn’t stop it, they were going to ruin everything.

“I am surprised that you would dare to show your face here.” Astonished, Julia reared back, blinking rapidly, as the gentleman she had seen glaring at her from across the ballroom now stood before her, swaying a little from one side to the other. Her hand clamped itself strongly around Lord Charleston’s arm, her heart beating wildly as she stared at the gentleman, seeing his wide eyes and his hand pointing at her. “After what you have done, I would have thought that you would have hidden yourself away, far from where society could reach you. The audacity of your presence is –”

“Pardon me, but I do not know what you speak of.” Heat built in her face as she waved him away, aware that his voice was loud enough now to carry to the very edges of the ballroom. Despite her fright, she drew herself up, realizing that there had been a misunderstanding as to who she was, but also seeing the need to defend herself. She did not want the ton to believe what was being said of her. “You mistake me for someone else. Do excuse me. I am to dance with Lord Charleston.”

To her horror, the gentleman grabbed her hand and held her back, leaving her pulled between two gentlemen. The weight of his words flung themselves at her one at a time, stacking up one on top of the other, pushing her onto the floor.
