David Ciferri's Take on Time Travel

I think time travel fires the imagination because it offers us the opportunity to "fix" the past (according to our lights) as well as the chance to find out what's coming at us down the road.

And there's a poignant aspect to time travel that tends to be overlooked. What older adult, looking at pictures from his or her youth, hasn't lamented an old goal not pursued, an old friendship not maintained, an old hurt not made up for? And what young person, planning his or her future, hasn't to some degree fretted that work and love may prove elusive, along with a happy life?

We know that time travel isn't really possible, but we love the stories about it because, at least within the bounds of fiction, we have all the second chances we need and the perfect foresight we crave.
