THE ELECTION RITUAL….

It is painful to see how hopeful many Americans remain: that somehow, someone they vote for, between the only two parties they know anything about, will make America safer, happier, more comfortable and at ease for them and their children. We used to believe this, in the Sixties, almost desperately. Fannie Lou Hamer’s heart was broken when she realized it was a dream; close to the one Martin Luther King was talking about. I grew up in the South, where we lived half a heartbeat from homelessness....

They Are Eating Oaxaca.

I traveled to Oaxaca twice in the Nineties to study Spanish.  My companion and I stayed in the home of an energetic grandmother who taught him how to make mole’ – the chocolatey sauce that covers many dishes there and to which he became somewhat addicted.
