Two Words That Drive Success

Data scientist, Sean Farrel analyzed speech patterns from over 26,000 transcripts and 1,500 collegiate athletes. 

Farrel looked at interviews with NBA draft prospects and found two words that drive success and were used more often by players who successfully made it to the NBA.

These players used words like “realize” and “believe” more often than those who didn’t.

“Realize” showed players had self-awareness. They talked about what they needed to work on or understood what it really takes to succeed at the next level.

“Believe” showed confidence and vision. These players weren’t just hoping to make it — they believed they belonged.

It turns out, the way players talk about their journey says a lot about how they think — and that mindset can be just as important as physical skills. These are the two words that drive success in NBA players.

Interestingly, the converse was also true, athletes that spoke in complex sentence structure, correlated with lower success.

Just goes to show, that SIMPLE IS POWERFUL…

Believe in what you’re doing.

Realize what it takes.

That mindset might just be your secret weapon. However, it does also take patience & persistence…

4 Ways To Avoid The Mountain Top Blues

I finished speaking this week at the Afflink Summit. A wonderful company and organization! One of my points with these successful folks was the reality of mountain top moments and the Mountain Top Blues.

We can’t live up on the mountain top, we have to come back down!

And most deaths on Mount Everest occur on the way back DOWN. I used Rory McIlroy as a recent example, because he achieved the highest of mountain tops in winning The Masters and finally completing the grand slam of golf!

Consider the case of Olympic athletes, who train for years to achieve glory. After their event, they often experience a profound low, struggling to adjust back to normalcy. The mountain top blues… This adjustment period is crucial, as they need to find a new purpose or goal to avoid the ‘mountain top blues’.

His last major was in 2014 and he struggled far longer than he wanted, but Rory finally reached the mountain top again!! and then, “what’s next?”  

“I climbed my Everest in April, and I think after you do something like that, you’ve got to make your way back down, and you’ve got to look for another mountain to climb.” – Rory McIlroy

Rory McIlroy’s quote about looking for another mountain to climb resonates with many who feel aimless after a peak moment. It emphasizes the need for continual growth and the pursuit of new challenges. If we can improve the process, we can also avoid the mountain top blues more easily.

In the business world, leaders often face this challenge after a successful project launch or financial payout. The initial excitement is quickly followed by the realization that the journey doesn’t end.

Mountain top moments, though exhilarating, can lead to a sense of emptiness when the excitement fades away. This phenomenon is not uncommon in various aspects of life, including personal achievements and professional milestones. For instance, after winning a championship, athletes often face a psychological dip as they realize the peak of success is temporary. This echoes the feelings many experience after significant life events, like graduating or starting a new job, where the anticipation and celebration are often followed by a stark return to everyday life.

However, the good news about mountain top moments is they don’t last. It’s good news because it reveals the sheer power of time…

The good times don’t last is PROOF that the bad times can’t last! That means no matter what you are struggling through, this too shall pass! It means the Mountain Top Blues won’t last either!

How To Avoid The Mountain Top Blues 1) The harder you work for something, the more you’ll enjoy it.

Reaching the mountain top should feel good! But, it’s the struggle that is actually the prize! The process, including all the setbacks and learning experiences, is what truly shapes us. Understanding that winning feels better than having won reinforces the idea that the journey is what enriches our lives.

Your identity is a tapestry woven from various life experiences, not solely defined by achievements. Reflecting on personal values and passions beyond performance can help alleviate the pressure that often accompanies success. Engage in activities that foster a sense of belonging and purpose, contributing to a balanced identity.

Winning feels better than having won!

2)Your identity matters!

Your performance is just part of your identity!

Understanding that your issues will persist after a significant accomplishment is crucial. This realization can lead to a more realistic perspective on success. It’s important to confront and embrace challenges, using them as stepping stones for personal growth.

Your performance cannot define you and you must be in touch with your larger purpose and where your real identity is rooted.

Other people can describe you, but only you can define you! 

3) Your issues will still remain.

No matter what mountain top you summit, regardless of the pay off, affirmations, or how good it feels in the moment, one harsh reality remains… You’ll still have the same issues and concerns as before. 

We “think” that we will be changed and we will, but not because of the mountaintop moment, we change because of the valleys! That’s where the real growth takes place!

Self-awareness is key to managing expectations. Regularly reflecting on your goals and the reasons behind them can help ground your achievements in reality. This practice fosters resilience against the ‘mountain top blues’, as you learn to appreciate the journey rather than just the destination.

Prioritize strategies that promote mental health and well-being to combat feelings of emptiness. Consider mindfulness practices, such as meditation or journaling, which can help maintain a healthy perspective on life’s ups and downs. Building a strong support network of friends and mentors can also provide encouragement during challenging times.

The real growth takes place in the valleys!

Ultimately, navigating the highs and lows of life requires a balance. Embrace the successes but remain grounded in reality. Recognizing that life is a series of peaks and valleys can help you appreciate the journey while equipping you to handle the inevitable ‘mountain top blues’ that follow.

4) Expectations rise faster than the results.

Unless we are aware, we will just continually move the goal posts in terms of our performance.

The mountaintop moment didn’t fulfill us, so our own mind and others try to get us thinking that we must climb a bigger mountain! THEN, we will be enough and that’s the reason why we have the mountaintop blues in the first place.

3 Lessons From Rory McIlroy

Rory McIlroy’s journey in professional golf is not just about his victories, but the lessons he has imparted through his experiences.

Lesson #1- It only takes one!

This concept is similar to the metaphor of ‘the hinge’ in life, which signifies the moments that can unlock new doors and possibilities. Mental toughness is crucial in recognizing when such moments arise, as you never know when fortune will smile upon you.

No matter how dire your circumstance, remember that it only takes one moment to change everything! One shot, one opportunity, or one inspirational figure can turn your situation around and propel you forward.

That’s the Hinge! And it’s the importance of mental toughness, because you don’t know when your own moment will hit.

Rory’s journey to winning The Masters exemplifies this lesson. Despite the ups and downs during the tournament, he remained focused and ready to seize the moment when it presented itself. This resilience is vital for anyone facing challenges in their personal or professional lives.

I thought Rory had won The Masters when he got it to -14 with a birdie on the 10th hole. Then, he made double bogey on 13, and followed it with another bogey on 14 to actually lose the lead. But THEN, he made a birdie on hole 15 and another on hole 17 to take a one shot lead headed into the final hole. Then, he bogeyed 18 and went to a playoff.

His caddy asked him before the playoff started “On monday, what would you say if I asked you if you’d take a playoff in order to win The Masters?” Rory replied, “I’d take it. Let’s go win it.”

His hinge moment was he birdied 18 in the Playoff to finally win The Masters and complete the Grand Slam! One of The first lessons from Rory McIlroy is It only takes one!

It only takes ONE!

Additionally, greatness often comes ONLY after periods of struggle. The key lessons from Rory McIlroy start with – you should always be prepared for your moment. Whether in sports, work, or personal goals, recognize that everything can change with one significant action, one hinge moment.

“It feels incredible. This is my 17th time here and I started to wonder if it would ever be my time.”

His approach to utilizing his mental strengths over weaknesses shapes his strategy in competition, encouraging others to identify and leverage their own strengths in various aspects of life.

Lesson #2- You win with your strengths!

I actually cried when Rory McIlroy won The Masters and it meant more to me then Tiger’s redemption victory in 2019. Here’s why…

Rory has had to deal with the heartbreak, criticism, and representing the PGA Tour as an ambassador while months later the PGA Tour threw him under the bus.

Many legendary golfers fell short of this achievement. Each of them had their share of triumphs and challenges, reinforcing the idea that greatness requires more than just skill; it necessitates going beyond personal barriers and overcoming obstacles.

Rory’s near misses, including his heartbreaking loss at The Masters in 2011, reveal critical insights about resilience and the importance of learning from setbacks. Every bruise leaves a mark, but it can also forge a stronger character.

It’s vital to remain committed to your goals, even when the path is fraught with challenges. Rory’s journey teaches us that perseverance can ultimately lead to success, and the ability to bounce back is a hallmark of a true champion.

After The 2024 U.S. Open, I wrote how Rory choked.

Putting has never been McIlroy’s strength and it didn’t win it for him here either. He placed his confidence in winning doing what he did best, which was ball-striking!

In the heat of competition, remember to focus on your strengths! Just like Rory, you must be aware of your capabilities and apply them effectively. This focused mindset can lead to success beyond the golf course.

Understanding your strengths is one of the lessons from Rory McIlroy that allows you to master your own craft, whether it’s in sports, business, or any other field. Consistency in using these strengths can outpace relying on strategies that are not your forte, leading to greater achievements.

Completing the Grand Slam is a milestone that only a select few have achieved throughout the history of golf. It signifies not just talent but also determination and persistence through trials.

Sam Snead didn’t do it, nor Arnold Palmer, Phil Mickleson, Seve’ Ballesteros, Lee Trevino, nor even Tom Watson. They all came up short…

Rory almost didn’t get it done either. He lost The Masters in 2011 at the age of 25. He hadn’t won a Major since 2014. For one of the best players in history, that’s a lot of time, heartbreak, indecision and detours along the journey.

But, he stayed at it and came through when it mattered the most. Perhaps these lessons from Rory McIlroy will show you the path to follow and keep in mind!

Belief in oneself is paramount, especially when the journey becomes arduous. There will be pain and hardship, but making the conscious choice to keep pursuing your dreams is crucial. Embrace the notion of just keeping going, even when obstacles arise.

8 Ways To Puke & Rally

It’s NOT about the setback, it’s about the COMEBACK!

We all have puked in life, but a rally always involves others!

1. Know your identity. You can’t outperform your own self-perception. It starts with belief and truth about yourself. Know that you were made to thrive.2. Overcome the setback. Adversity will happen!  But, it’s the one mistake that derails your plans. If you can just overcome the setback, you’ll get your second-wind. Failure is not fatal! 3.  Never give up. It’s how you comeback! Commitment means finishing what you started long after the mood in which you said it has worn off. Just Keep moving! Essentially, this is the main skill that I’m good at and it’s one of the ways to puke & rally. 4. “You’re not good enough.” Hearing this lightning of a statement is actually a necessary ingredient for success and significance. You’ll listen to this and believe it OR believe in yourself. There’s NO middle ground.More in-depth ways to Puke & Rally [image error] 5. The lightning rod. Other people will protect us from those lightning strikes. And it only takes one good friend to believe in us. Allow yourself to be coachable and surround yourself with honest relationships that endure. This requires patience. 6. Focus on others. This was the key topic of our book- NO ONE Gets There ALONE. The way we comeback is to get outside of our own head. When we focus on others, we are actually helping out ourselves. It’s the most selfish thing that you can do. 7. Your hinge moment. We are all getting ready for that one person, moment, or decision who will connect us with who we will become. IT ONLY TAKES ONE! That’s the hinge. 8. Process > product. When we achieve a goal or milestone, we’ve reached the mountaintop. The tall mountaintop is nice, but nothing grows up there. We eventually have to come back down off that mountaintop. Three Life Lessons From Sledding

We first raced to the top! Sledding quickly became more than just a fun activity; it turned into a profound life experience filled with valuable life lessons from sledding.

For the first time in my life, I lost a race to the top with my daughter! This unexpected turn of events was a wake-up call, teaching me a valuable lesson about the passage of time. As I watched my daughter gut it out past me, I realized that she was getting faster and stronger, while I was becoming more aware of the inevitable signs of aging.

Life Lessons from Sledding: Embracing Growth and Change

I felt so joyful because of her development!!

So, of course we raced again…

Seeing her joy and exuberance as she sped up the hill filled my heart with happiness. Each race became a celebration of her development and an acknowledgment of my own journey. Sledding, in this context, became a metaphor for life, where we experience growth, change, and, at times, the humbling reality of our limitations. These life lessons from sledding are reminders that we must savor each moment and embrace our personal evolution.

These life lessons from sledding remind us of the joy in embracing change and growth and the power of patience. Each descent down the hill is not merely an escape into the winter wonderland but a poignant reminder of how we navigate life’s ups and downs. The thrill of sledding mirrors the exhilaration we feel when we overcome obstacles, and the cold wind against our faces symbolizes the challenges we face in life.

And I lost, but it was a loss filled with lessons. Each defeat painfully teaches us resilience, grit, and the importance of perseverance. My daughter winning was a reminder that life is not just about victories but also about sharing moments of joy with the ones we love.

1) Life Lessons from sledding #1- Time is undefeated. It moves so fast! My daughter is now 16, on the brink of adulthood, and it feels like just yesterday she was a giggling five-year-old. Time is relentless, reminding us that every moment is precious. Because we can’t beat time, we must learn to improve our relationship with it. Primarily, the bad times don’t last because the good times can’t last! Embracing this truth allows us to appreciate each moment fully, both the highs and lows.

2) Life Lessons from sledding #2- The climb up takes way longer than the journey down.

We often find ourselves racing to the top, seeking the thrill of reaching new heights. However, the reality is that the rewards often lie in the journey itself. We celebrate those who can get to the top of the hill the FASTEST, but what about those who make the climb repeatedly, embracing the process? Life is more about longevity, consistency, and resilience than it is about getting “there” the fastest.

🧭 Life isn’t about climbing just ONE MOUNTAIN; it’s about the many mountains we encounter along our journey. Anyways, mental toughness is not a mountaintop experience. 

🧭 It’s about the many mountains along your journey. Each hill we climb represents challenges and opportunities for growth. The real victory lies in our ability to keep returning, to keep trying, and to keep pushing ourselves further, even after the thrill of a successful run has faded.

🧭 It’s about the many mountains along your journey. And even though we reward the speed to the top, the REAL reward is if you keep going back up to the top! 

It’s not who gets there first, it’s who can get there and stay there!

🧭 Because the good times don’t last is proof that the bad times can’t last! Just keep climbing. Each journey down the hill brings us new insights and an opportunity to reflect on our progress. It’s not just about the thrill of the ride, but about the lessons we learn along the way.

In conclusion, sledding becomes more than just an exhilarating winter pastime; it transforms into a profound metaphor for life. Each run down the hill represents our life’s journey, filled with lessons about growth, resilience, and the importance of staying in the race, regardless of the obstacles we face.

As I continued sledding with my daughter, each trip down the hill became a cherished memory. These experiences are filled with laughter and conversations that deepen our bond. The lessons learned on those snowy slopes extend far beyond the hills, shaping our perspectives on life and its challenges.

3) Life Lessons from sledding #3- We celebrate who can get down the FASTEST on the sled, but NOT who can go the furthest in the snow.

It’s important to recognize that speed is not everything; often, the true measure of success is how far we can go and how much ground we can cover in our lives.

🧭 Since we can’t stay at the top of any of the mountains, it’s about how far you can keep going and reaching the different mountaintops! This requires consistency, patience, longevity, vision, and attention to the details. There are no dynasties without time!

Steph Curry shows us why the details matter! Steph Curry’s impact on Under Armour UA, was projected at the $14 billion dollar level when he signed in 2013.But, it was NIKE’S failure to the details that cost them the superstar and why he instead signed with UA. Nike lost Curry more than UA actually won Steph Curry. So, what happened and how did Nike lose?During the Nike pitch to Curry and his team, the pitch deck still had  Kevin Durant’s  name left on a slide.

That was it, one major detail that caused Nike to lose the contract of future Hall of Famer and multiple NBA champion and MVP, Steph Curry.
 

I can assure you that more games in any sport or contest are LOST more than they are WON. And if you want to know what wins, you HAVE to understand what loses!

Mistakes and lack of attention to the details are what loses…

Coaches Using Profanity At Practice: Powerful, Hurtful, or Both?

In sports, a coach’s language holds a tremendous amount of power, influencing players, parents, and the overall atmosphere of practice and competition.

Coaches using profanity, particularly saying the word “fuck”, has become increasingly commonplace in athletic settings.

While some may argue that such language can galvanize a team or emphasize a point, it is essential to explore the deeper implications behind using this word.

This article delves into the consequences of using profanity at practice, the emotional significance of strong language, the role of coaches in guiding their teams’ communication, and ultimately, how to strike a balance between expression and professionalism.

The Power of Words in Sports

Words can inspire greatness or demoralize a team.

I’ve known many coaches who do not ever use profanity in or out of practice. Whereas other coaches have emphasized and defended their use of profanity in practice and in particular, saying ‘fuck” at practice.

In sports, profanity serve not only as tools for communication but as a medium through which emotions are expressed. Language can motivate players to push their limits, unify them in their quest for victory, or even create a sense of camaraderie. However, when certain words become overly prevalent, they can lose their intended effect, drowning out the nuances of genuine encouragement.

Profanity, particularly coaches using profanity at practice and especially saying fuck at practice , can often serve as a double-edged sword in sports.

While it may momentarily express frustration, its frequent use can lead to desensitization, losing it’s effectiveness and impact.

What was once a powerful exclamation can shift into a mere reflex, losing its original intensity and purpose. Understanding the implications of such language is crucial for players, coaches, and educators alike.

Over-reliance on profanity can create a toxic environment within a team.

Coaches who frequently pepper their speech with profanity can inadvertently send the message that such language is acceptable in all contexts, which may not align with the values of sportsmanship and respect.

Moreover, coaches using profanity extends beyond the field.
