HOLT Medallion Award Arrives!

Authors write in solitude, and we have no idea whether or not our stories resonate until others read our work. Editors, readers, contest judges, and reviewers have the final say about the success or failure of a book, no matter how much time, effort, and heart we put into our manuscripts.

The HOLT Medallion Award arrived with my winner’s certificate for my fantasy romance novella HER IMMORTAL VIKING and I couldn’t be more thrilled. Though I’ve been a finalist in several professional writing contests, the HOLT is my first win.

The judges for this contest are readers—this is not a peer contest—and that means all the more to me. My handsome Viking hero, Gunnar of Alfheim, who comes from “the place between heaven and earth” and sacrifices everything for the love of a modern, mortal woman, has won the hearts of readers, and for that I’m grateful.

I’m thrilled to announce that HER IMMORTAL VIKING has *WON* the prestigious 2016 HOLT Medallion Award “for outstanding literary fiction in the Romance Novella category.”

Many thanks to Virginia Romance Writers and the readers who judged the contest, loved my book, and gave my Viking and I this honor.

ONE LONELY NIGHT

Divine intervention. That’s all Penny asks. Freedom from overwork and mountainous debt. She sings songs of praise, chants like a yogi, and rubs her belly like Buddha until the crystal charm on her navel shimmers, all hoping to draw the attention of someone—anyone—“up there.”

In the west, beyond the seas, from the place between Heaven and Earth, an immortal hears Penny’s cries. Once a renowned Viking warrior, Gunnar has been cast into eternal servitude by an angry god. Now, while Penny sleeps, he comes to Earth to grant her wishes. But Penny is about to wake up, and so is every desire she’s ever known. To claim their fairy-tale ending, Gunnar must find a way to clear his name. Not only must his sword arm and courage stay strong, but their powerful love must cross the divide of a thousand years.

Mornings By The Bay: More Thrift Shop Chic

I’ve been furnishing my beach house on a budget, making selective purchases at thrift shops and yard sales to help make my home beautiful, without the guilt or worry about overspending.

I found this adorable accent table at a resale shop for $13. The antique lamp was given to me by a friend, and the shells are items I’ve collected all my life from U.S. beach resorts and tropical destinations. I created this attractive but functional space by adding a bowl and a piece of vintage brain coral.

Seashells make great conversation pieces.

I rescued this signed, one-of-a kind artisan pottery bowl from a non-profit thrift shop for only $2.

Yard sale find for $5. This vase, probably from Home Goods, looks pretty with the wicker furniture and bright blue walls.

Pottery starfish accent piece found at a thrift shop for $2.  I love this.

Do you shop at thrift stores and yard sales? What are some of your best finds? Do share!

Yay, Summer’s Here!

The unofficial start to summer Memorial Day weekend arrived on a cra-crazy weather menagerie of 90 degree July-like days, followed by 12 plus hours of torrential rain and flooding on the eastern shore. Our little beach community on the bay buzzed with activity until the monsoon came; and then the joggers, bikers, swimmers, gardeners, tennis and basketball players, and children in the park vanished inside. Even the ice cream truck that tours the neighborhood twice a day disappeared.

My long weekend wasn’t all sunbathing and margaritas. I finished the first round edits to Luxury Model Wife and turned them into my publisher (yay!) then read The Girl on The Train by Paula Hawkins (gave the book a five-star review; wish I’d written it and gotten that sweet movie deal). For me, the Memorial Day weekend was the perfect blend of remembering those who served our country, honest work, and entertaining relaxation. I hope your kickoff to the season was enjoyable, too.

Welcome, summer, my favorite time of year.
