How a Hotel Concierge’s Blog Went Viral
This is the part of ourongoing seriesin which we interview people who have interesting jobs and get them to tell us how they landed them. They will also reveal how they handled the transition to the real world after graduation —

Kim Blanck and Todd Dakotah Briscoe
Todd Briscoe and I went to the same high school in West Texas. (He was a yearbook editor, I was a newspaper editor.) We also had something else in common at our high school graduation – we were both getting out of Texas ASAP. He went...

That Time I Worked At A Toothbrush Factory
This is part of our ongoing series of the worst/weirdest jobs —

When I was in college, I spent about a year working at a toothbrush factory. At least, that’s what I called it. I was actually a graphic designer, designing the pieces that go on the end of electric toothbrushes – like I would design the Barbie or Hello Kitty or Spiderman on the toothbrush (we did normal toothbrushes, too).
We were a small company in a small town in Texas that had just been bought out by a huge c...

MMMMM…Madeleines
Sometimes nothing will do but the perfect treat – a hybrid of cake and cookie that is also a French institution and the most literary of the cake/cookies (thanks to Marcel Proust).

we call zis zee madeleine
Madeleines are perfect as a last-minute treats – you’re likely to have all of these ingredients in your pantry and, if not, you could probably grab the ingredients from the shop even during a catastrophic nuclear winter. They’re buttery, French, and well-worth the literature they inspire.
Bes...

The Story of Our Book
The good people over at Book Country asked us to interview each other about our forthcoming book, Graduates in Wonderland.

In which Jess says something so hilarious Rachel can’t keep her eyes open
Here’s a snippet:
Rachel: Do you remember the night of our graduation from Brown?
Jess: Uh, yes. Obviously. I wasn’t that drunk and we’ve only just turned 29.
Rachel: Okay, prove it. What do you remember about the pact we made that night?
Jess: We were sitting on the back steps of the house we lived in w...

That Time My Boss Waxed In Front Of Me
This is part of our ongoing series of the worst/weirdest jobs —
I worked for this woman who runs a social enterprise that empowers disadvantaged young women. It’s a great cause.
We worked out of her flat, which made some things a bit tricky. She’d be in the kitchen, and I’d be in the dining room, every so often she’d run in behind me, stand on the rug, and do her kettlebell workout, which meant that a six kilo weight [ thirteen pounds] was swinging quite close to my head while I was typing, whi...
Birthday
So, this happened yesterday. To me.
In this scene, I am Schmidt.
Second birthday in London (two in Australia, two in Beijing, one in Bangkok) – it’s been nearly SEVEN YEARS since college graduationat Brown!
But it’s okay, because I still managed to go to a market and buy this rhubarb (a “vegetable” I did not discover until 2010):
and meet this dog (who eats 2 pounds of food a day):
and run 6.2 miles here:
and a friend from Brown sent me this poem by ee cummings:
Take for example this:
if to the colou...

An American in England
A tongue-in-cheek yet very important etiquette column
Dear Miss J.Fine,
I’m an American new to England. I know the stereotype of the loud, ugly American – but what are the lesser-known (but just as serious) faux pas that I should avoid? Does it really matter which way I pass the port?
Signed,
Scared of Posh English People Judging Me
Dear Scared,
The English are delightfully self-effacing, refined, and complex, but due to the class system which is engrained in the psyche of their culture, if you don...

Wuthering Tarts
I made some traditional Yorkshire curt tarts in honor of the first day of spring and Emily Brontë’s masterpiece, Wuthering Heights. I made my own cheese curds. Go check out the post over at The Hairpin. It’s the kind of tart that will nourish, impress and disgust.
