Snippet Sunday – #8sunday

So, with In Pain and Blood now available to all, I thought I’d switch to something a little different for this week: Such as the unexpected novella that comes after, which’ll be ready in early 2018… if a certain elf would just let me finish it. It was meant to be a short story, but it’s now at 18k.

The snippet is a little longer than the other pieces I’ve recently done for Snippet Sunday and Rainbow Snippets… and a little on the mature side, nothing graphic…

The veil Dylan had physically removed from Tracker’s waist still lay half draped on the bed. Tracker snatched it up and threaded the finely-woven linen through the holes in their headboard before winding one end around Dylan’s wrist. When this act wasn’t met with objection, Tracker did the same to the other wrist.

He glanced down at the man as he tightened the last knot. Those dark eyes, glowing with trust, watched his every movement. “It is the usual stopword, yes?”

Dylan bit his lip. The redness of his cheeks darkened further as he nodded.

“You are terrible,” Tracker grumbled half-heartedly. “Making me do all the work.”

His husband chuckled. “Well, it is my day.”

Tracker gave a mock gasp, clutching at his chest. “And he throws my own words back at me.” He bent over Dylan. “Such insolence,” he purred before claiming his husband’s mouth with his own.

Dylan broke their kiss, grinning up at him. “You love me that way.”

Weekend Writing Warriors – #8sunday

If you replied last week, I’m sorry about not getting over to your blog. My godmother got quite ill and is in surgery today getting her gallbladder removed.

I’m still sticking with snippets from In Pain and Blood releases. And the piece for Weekend Writing Warriors, Snippet Sunday and Rainbow Snippets moves away from the last two weeks and into something a little lighter: This is back when Tracker joined the group, this is the first time he spars with Authril…

Tracker’s moves were rather snake-like. He’d strike like a viper, coiling both weapons and arms around his opponent’s body as if they were pythons of metal and flesh, then dart out of reach before she could react.

After enduring the fifth such move, Authril staggered back. Swearing just loud enough for Dylan to make out the words pouring from her clenched teeth, she shook herself and lunged at the hound.

Dylan tracked them as the pair danced about the cleared patch. There were hints of more designs on the hound’s back—something very central on his upper spine that the others were situated around—but the way the man kept twisting out of Authril’s reach made it difficult to make out what exactly.

“He’s very inked, isn’t he?” Katarina said, causing Dylan to jump. He’d forgotten the hedgewitch sat next to him and also watched the pair.

“I wasn’t looking,” he said, the words rushing out before he could stop them. Heat blazed across his face as she arched a brow at him, and he mumbled, “I mean… I hadn’t noticed.”

#IWSG – Looking Back

[image error]For those who don’t know, IWSG is a group where people can share their writing struggles and offer encouragement and support to other members. To sign up, click here.

This month, the co-hosts who are helping IWSG’s founder, Alex J. Cavanaugh, manage this great group are… Julie FlandersShannon LawrenceFundy Blue and Heather Gardner. Do be sure to pop by their sites and thank them!

***

It’s been so long since I’ve done a IWSG post. I’ve been up to my eyeballs in trying to get In Pain and Blood ready for its release on the 15th. It’s been a while since I’ve released anything new, with most of the stuff being re-releases after getting my rights back.

Of course, I have to chuck myself back into the deep end with a 309k whopper that’s also a high fantasy mm romance.  Trying to remind myself that just about every word I hear, from my critique partners all the way top beta/arc readers, is good.

Still… *gnaws nails*

As you look back on 2017, with all its successes/failures, if you could backtrack, what would you do differently?

Probably given myself a little more time towards getting In Pain and Blood ready. A lot of it wasn’t in my control (like copy editors dropping my work after having it for a month, twice) and so I’m here having just finished the proofreading with precious little time to upload it. But then, I also believed I’d be done with writing it some months back. And goodness knows when the map artist I’ve commissioned will finally be done because she wound up backlogged.

Hopefully, Dark One’s Bride won’t be as troublesome, because I plan to tackle that new year.

Oh, and if you don’t mind, I’d like to ask for a little support for my Thunderclap campaign.

Weekend Writing Warriors – #8sunday

Still sticking with snippets from In Pain and Blood releases. I don’t think I’ve done quite so many interviews and guest posts as I’ve done for my upcoming blog tour. Still got a couple more to go, so I’ll be brief.

So, the piece for Weekend Writing WarriorsSnippet Sunday and Rainbow Snippets carries on from the last two weeks: Dylan and the group have all returned to the tavern for dinner where a minstrel has started singing a song about a rogue spellster when Tracker, the King’s Hound, suggests they and the rest of their group have shot to their feet…

Dylan trailed behind them, trying to listen to the song. In it, the unnamed maiden struggled against her bonds, but the knots were tight and the rope bit her skin. “How does it end?” he asked as they reached the top of the stairs.

Tracker sighed. “Typically. Her lover arrives at midnight to spirit her away. When she spots him in the square, she throws herself out the window to warn him and is killed in the fall.”

“So he gets away?”

The hound turned to face him. “Do you really think that?”

Weekend Writing Warriors – #8sunday

Still sticking with snippets from In Pain and Blood releases. Got both of the scented candles done that I’m going to be giving away during my blog tour. Just waiting for the labels and map posters.

So, the piece for Weekend Writing WarriorsSnippet Sunday and Rainbow Snippets carries on from the last week’s post: Dylan and the group have all returned to the tavern for dinner where a minstrel has started singing a song about a rogue spellster with Tracker, the King’s Hound, quietly singing along…

Dylan clutched the side of the table. He’d a sick feeling of how the rest of the song went, of how many tales there were involving sacrifices, and was fully prepared to leave before such a conclusion. But there was something in Tracker’s hushed voice, a wavering note of pain, that kept Dylan from getting to his feet.

The song spoke of another man, a young stable hand who listened in on the couple’s plan and, when the hounds came sniffing, told them of the spellster’s imminent return. So the hounds waited until the first night of the full moon, then they trussed and gagged the maiden, placing her at the window facing the direction her spellster lover would come.

Dylan held his breath. Only then did he realise the rest of the room had fallen silent.

Tracker stood. “Perhaps we should seek out our room?”

As one, the women shot to their feet.

Don’t forget to check out the other excerpts.

Weekend Writing Warriors – #8sunday

Another week, another piece from In Pain and Blood releases. Got my candles done. Just waiting for the labels and map posters. The extra short story has ballooned into a novelette.

Onwards to the piece for Weekend Writing WarriorsSnippet Sunday and Rainbow Snippets.

This piece skips a few dances from the last two weeks’ posts to the next chapter, where they’ve all returned to the tavern for dinner…

Dylan spun on his stool, leaning back on the table and listening to the music. A few minstrels had made their way inside as the daylight turned grey. They played softly, barely heard at times over the ruckus of a few nearby dicers, but the notes had been familiar. This new song was not.

A woman stood up near the minstrels and, as she plucked on a small lyre, Dylan heard Tracker humming a few bars. When the woman began to sing, so did the hound. Albeit, quietly.

Dylan listened to the song, twisting in his seat to hear Tracker better without the man knowing, and quickly realised why he’d never heard it before.

The song spoke of an innkeeper’s daughter who’d fallen in love with a rogue spellster. The man promised her a life where she would want for nothing, if only she would run off with him on the first night of the full moon.

Don’t forget to check out the other excerpts.
