Weekend Writing Warriors – #8sunday
[image error]
Yup, we’re still continuing with the wip To Poison a Prince for snippets whilst I write a whole other novella.
For those of you catching up… Darshan and Hamish are a pair of thirty-something princes from two vastly different lands who are now travelling through the ginormous Udynea Empire that Darshan is from on their way to the capital.
This one is carrying on from last week and ended with Darshan mentioning how he’s not happy about taking his husband to the soirée.
In and out. That was all he had required from this leg of their journey. The plan to arrange a lakeship passage for them and their horses across the Shar should’ve been a simple one. They could’ve easily taken their leave of this city before nightfall. And they would have, had there not been that blasted messenger waiting for him at the docks.
I should’ve kept the blasted thing quiet. But Hamish had asked and they had promised to keep nothing from each other.
They had argued about it whilst standing on the dockside for a solid half-hour with Darshan insistent on keeping to their plan whilst Hamish queried the consequences of ignoring an invite to a soirée hosted specifically for the vris Mhanek.
You cannae let her have any quarter, nae even to protect me. Hamish’s reminder echoed through his mind.

Hamish is finally free to live with the man who won his heart.
If only someone didn’t keep trying to ruin his happily-ever-after.

For those of you catching up… Darshan and Hamish are a pair of thirty-something princes from two vastly different lands who are now travelling through the ginormous Udynea Empire that Darshan is from on their way to the capital.
This one is carrying on from last week and ended with Darshan mentioning how the soirée invite from his half-sister has the phrase “dying to meet him”.
There was no mention of his husband by name, although she had to know it. What do you have planned, now? Darshan was certain this soirée was more a case of her wanting his husband in a convenient position to ascertain Hamish’s weaknesses, if not see the man dead. Quite a few means to that end.
How he hated throwing Hamish into the deep end with this blasted soirée, but if they managed his half-sister well enough, then there was little else the Crystal Court could throw at them that they wouldn’t be able to handle together.
Darshan tapped a forefinger on the edge of the parchment. He would need to keep a close eye on his husband during their stay. That could be irksome and possibly signal an opening to those who wanted their vris Mhanek dead. Perhaps he could play off the whole newly-wedded bliss angle.
It was largely true; they’d only been married for a little over two months.

This one is carrying on from last week, where Darshan mentioned his half-sister.
To top it off, his homicidal sibling had invited them to her estate this evening under the guise of a soirée. She’d even seen that it was held in honour of his approaching birthday so he couldn’t ignore the blasted invite. At least, it would be bad form to refuse. He could just see it now, all the vicious rumours she would spread about Hamish’s influence on their vris Mhanek in Darshan’s absence.
Huffing, he once more unrolled the scroll bearing the now-broken seal of a vlossina. Being the only one of the Mhanek’s daughters who resided in this dismal city, she hardly needed to use it or the signature on the bottom of the letter. To have both marking the parchment hinted at uncertainty in her status. As she should be.
The invite was curt and as two-faced as its inscriber. And for her to explicitly talk about him bringing Hamish? Dying to meet him.

Weekend Writing Warriors – #8sunday

Even though I’m currently madly writing a fairytale novella, I’m continuing with the wip, To Poison a Prince, for snippets.
For those of you catching up… Darshan and Hamish are a pair of thirty-something princes from two vastly different lands who are now travelling through the ginormous Udynea Empire that Darshan is from on their way to the capital.
This one is carrying on from last week, where Darshan was trying to hurry Hamish.
Swallowing his mouthful of wine, Darshan returned to verbalising his complaints in the hopes that it would hasten his husband along. “It cannot be that much of a disaster.”
“Soon,” Hamish promised.
Darshan tapped a finger against the stem of his wine glass. Each clink of his ring gave off a different musical note, the variations added by him slowly lowering the level of the pale wine. “I want to see.”
What he actually wanted was to be free of this accursed city. If there was a place in all of the Udynea Empire that Darshan could hate more than the lakeside city of Nulshar, he hadn’t found it. As the slave capital of the empire, its main export was people and pain.
It was also the home of Onella, his eldest half-sister and biggest annoyance.

Dark One’s Bride is live!
It has been five months since Clarabelle Weaver saved the life of the infamous Great Lord and happily accepted his unexpected marriage proposal. With their wedding less than a week away, she is finally stepping into the unfamiliar world beyond her village to face nobility she never knew existed.
But it’s not only them who are interested in her presence.
The enemy is also stirring for this historic occasion. Their focus not on the man they see as their reviled “Dark Lord”, but on her as the young woman who supposedly carries his heir.
Clara must weave a path through attempted assassinations and poisonings whilst also proving to the court that she’s suitable to become their ruler’s Great Lady… all before taking their vows. But has her training prepared her for an attack that could send the kingdom into war?

Weekend Writing Warriors – #8sunday

It’s been a while since I’ve joined in. Being swamped with the final edits for Dark One’s Bride and getting it ready for its release on the 31st, as well as completing To Target the Heart.
But now I’m back! And with a new wip, To Poison a Prince, the sequel to To Target the Heart.
For those of you catching up… Darshan and Hamish are a pair of thirty-something princes from two vastly different lands who are now travelling through the ginormous Udynea Empire that Darshan is from on their way to the capital.
Opening scene, chapter one.
“Come on,” Darshan groaned, flopping his head back against the armrest of his chaise lounge. An age must’ve passed since he had first reclined here and, still, Hamish had yet to emerge from the blasted walk-in wardrobe. How difficult could it be for the man to pull on a few clothes and fasten some toggles? If it had been the same fiddly buttons that adorned Darshan’s outfit, he would’ve understood the delay, but he had expressly demanded ease.
He took another swig of wine, savouring the fruity flavour. Holding up the wineglass allowed the sunlight to glitter through the wine—the rays a splay of prismatic colour thanks to the stained-glass doors at his back.
Those same rainbow-hued beams also warmed the room, which made keeping the balcony doors closed troublesome the longer they lingered. As it was, the doors were closed to not to ward off any chill and contain the bustle out in the courtyard below, but to also give Darshan some reprieve from the endless whispers rustling on the wind. He would need to speak with a hedgewitch about the latter once they arrived at Minamist; there was generally one wondering the palace grounds.

Paperback of Dark One’s Bride
Usually, we get our mail quite late in the day, around 4pm. So, it’s not often I’ll be woken by someone announcing there’s mail for me. But this morning was one of those happy days, bringing the proof of Dark One’s Bride to my waiting hands.
Or rather, my daughter’s.
You can watch the unboxing on Facebook, but this is the result.
