-The Puppet Masters- by Robert Heinlein
It's been a while since I posted a book review. Frankly, my reading habits suffered this past year and a half or so. I've thrown myself back into it recently (good god, did you know you can fall out of practice? What an awful feeling), and my to-read pile is now the healthy little bedside tower it should be.
I've meandered through some early Heinlein to pack my brain with Violet DeVere-era idiom, and I discovered that I owned a copy of The Puppet Masters, which I'd never read. I corrected thi...

So I have a fan group on Facebook that I wasn't previously aware of. Talk about pleasant surprises! In fact, hello there to all of you in it, since my LJ posts are transcribed there (whether it's by some kindly soul or some automated function, I don't know).
I don't know because I didn't set the group up. So please be aware if you've been making comments on my transcribed LJ posts there, they are deeply appreciated, but, uh, I haven't actually seen them prior to today.
Also- if I don't respon...

A Bear, a Heinlein, and the Oracle at Delphi walk into a bar...
eBear has some thoughts on science fiction that jive pretty tightly with some of my own reflections. Although all of my published stuff is clearly fantasy (QotIS is a romantic hybrid, in that I'm taking pains to respect certain scientific realities while gleefully lampshading others into oblivion), I am a stone-cold science fiction nut from way back when. Anyhow, as the lady writes:
"What I meant, I admitted when pressed, was that I did not believe in the valorization of SF as the literature t...

Ow
Sweet mother of crap, on this afternoon's walk I sprained my ankle like a goddamn old-school Doctor Who companion.

Violet Flies Again
I got blitzed by a thunderstorm last night, otherwise I would have been able to put up the vital second half of Chapter 5 of
Queen of the Iron Sands.
"On Martian Wings" concludes! God god, is it a long one! Six thousand more words. . . it's got lyin'! It's got explainin'! It's got flyin'! It's got shootin'!
*****
"Is wearing someone else's mask a fashion no-no around here?" I asked.
"The punishment is death by starvation," said Gathris. "While strung up in an agony web."
"Boys," I said, "you may b...

" "In the Stacks" by Scott Lynch - Hands down the best story in the volume. Lynch's imagination is in top form as Wizards in training must venture into the bowels of an ancient magical library to return books to their proper stations. In some ways this is what we'd get if Jasper Fforde decided to go for more of a traditional Fantasy tale. Splendid and just plain fun. The prose and characters are as always...

I'm just a little black rain cloud...
I really do appreciate the massive cloud of comments and e-mail I received in response to my public post about depression. While it's no cure in and of itself, it does always help to know that other people are fighting (and functioning despite) the same hateful shit. I had intended to write a bit more about this very subject today, but I'm going to postpone it until Monday since I'm in the opening phase of one of my dee-light-ful anxiety attacks right now. Hell, the fact that I can even type ...

Dark magic, rich in antioxidants, is healthier for you than milk magic.
On June 22, the Eos edition of the short story anthology
Swords & Dark Magic: The New Sword and Sorcery
will be released, with a limited edition from Subterranean Press to follow in July. Was ist das, you ask? To quote the blurb on the SubPress version:
"Swords & Dark Magic is the most important new fantasy anthology to be published this decade. Featuring new stories from the bestselling and brightest writers working in the genre, including: New York Times bestselling authors Scott Lynch and G...
