Thank you!

My wonderful month of being a Goodreads featured author is winding down. What a fun time I've had answering your questions and visiting your booklists. WOW! Some of you are rabid readers, so good to know in today's texting-gaming-video world. Keep up the good work. We authors thrive on your good reviews. And remember, My question board is always open. Thank you for your support. Lurlene

Out of Print

Why does a book go out of print? Many reasons, of course, but popularity and sales of a particular book determine its fate.

Older titles can feel "dated" to readers...when I started writing my novels there were no cell phones, no modern technology, and updating these titles to bring them into the 21st century means major re-writing and re-publishing. Most publishers just don't want to do that. They're publishing new works and new writers.

Bookstore shelves are eager to display new material, not old, so this also causes older books to disappear. And readers like new stories, new books.

But many of these older titles "live" in e-format...you can download them and read all, and for less money than paper books. Yes, the devices (e-readers and computers) may seem costly, but all are becoming less so. So take on e-reader on vacation, download and READ!

Stories come from real life

Themes in popular books mirror real life. A young man in my city, only 24, and a football coach at a local high school is battling brain cancer. His "never-give-up" attitude is so much like Luke's in DON'T DIE MY LOVE. His cancer treatments are grueling, but he sets an example of courage for all as he fights for his life.

A career

Years ago I wrote SIX MONTHS TO LIVE, a book about a 13 year old girl who has leukemia. I had no idea that this book would launch me into a writing career, but it did. A writer must write a book because she loves writing, because she has a story inside bursting to get out, because she has characters who can't wait to spill onto paper. Fame is the last thing for a writer to expect.

It is beyond your control. It happens, or it doesn't. What you bring to the game is your best effort. Hopefully readers will find your book, connect with your story. The real gift is having a reader tell you, "I loved that book." or "I never liked to read until I read your story." The true measure of fame is knowing you connected with a reader, and tapped into someone's love of books.

A writer writes.

When Characters Refuse to Talk

I had a good day writing my new book today. But I've had many bad days. How do I define a bad day? That's a day when I can't make my characters talk to me. They go into hiding and refuse to come out and play.

On those days, it's best if I sit down and define plot points, because Characters don't talk when they run out of conflict . If characters are a novel's life blood, then conflict is the muscle that moves them. So if I lack sufficient problems confronting my people, they stop talking. And I have a bad writing day.
