FILL YOUR TABLETS WITH CANADIAN AUTHORS!
Bienvenue! Welcome! If you’re participating in the Crazy Canuck New Year’s Blog Hop, you’re in the right place! How are you doing so far? Are you as excited as I am to connect with so many fantastic Canadian authors?!? I know you’re on a mission, so I’ll keep this brief.
Why is this blog hop called Crazy Canuck?
The Crazy Canucks was a group of World Cup alpine ski racers from Canada who rose to prominence in the 1970s and ’80s. Dave Irwin, Dave Murray, Steve Podborski, Jim Hunter, and Ken Read earned themselves a reputation for fast and seemingly reckless skiing in the downhill event.
These five men earned their title “Crazy Canucks” from ski journalist and World Cup co-founder Serge Lange, who after watching their different styles came up with the name that caught on with sports journalists throughout the skiing world. Other similar nicknames included “Kamikaze Canadians.”
Am I a Crazy Canuck?
I write YA paranormal. Does that qualify me as a Crazy Canuck? I’ll let you decide! My debut novel, Firefly: Ice Born – Book One, was chosen by Kobo as a Teen Hidden Gem in 2014 and became a Kobo Bestseller for Kids and Teens! Huzzah!
Firefly is the bittersweet story of a teenage witch and the immortal witch hunter assigned to assimilate, infiltrate, and eliminate her Coven. Set in the fictional village of Snow Valley, California, Firefly is the first in a trilogy. Butterfly: Ice Born – Book Two is set to be released in 2016 by S & H Publishing.
I’ve also contributed short stories to two anthologies also published by S & H Publishing:
“The First Coven”, in Short & Happy (or not) – a paranormal legend connected to Firefly
“Murder on the Thames”, in Spies & Heroes – an old fashioned murder mystery
Canadian Music
When I write, I always listen to music and am often inspired by lyrics, music, and moods set by whatever musician I’m listening to – in fact, I’m listening to music as I write this post! From that music, I draft playlists for main characters. In Firefly, I’ve included two playlists. Here are some of the Canadian musicians featured:
Arcade Fire
Austra
Chilly Gonzales
City and Colour
David Usher
Forest City Lovers
Matthew Good
In Butterfly: Ice Born – Book Two, the draft playlists feature more Canadian musicians, mostly indie rock bands:
Arkells
Bedouin Soundclash
Broken Social Scene
Coleman Hell
East of Avenue
Feist
Great Lake Swimmers
Groenland
Hey Rosetta
Kardinal Offishall
Loreena McKennitt
Metric
No Vacancy
Sam Roberts
Shad
Simple Plan
The Besnard Lakes
The Most Serene Republic
The Weeknd
Canadian Authors
I’m featuring three of my favourite authors who reflect Canada’s pre-confederation societies: the First Nations, French, and English Canada.
Joseph Boyden’s brilliant second novel, Through Black Spruce, won the prestigious Scotiabank Giller Prize in 2008. Boyden is of Irish, Scottish, and Anishinaabe heritage. His novels feature First Nations heritage and culture. I highly recommend all of his novels.
Bryan Perro is the author of the children’s fantasy fiction series originally written in French. The first in the series is Porteur de Masques, known as Amos Daragon in the English translation of the novel. Perro’s series consist of twelve novels that focus on the adventurous young adult Amos Daragon and his quest to become the ‘Mask Wearer’. If you love Harry Potter – and who doesn’t? – you’ll love this series!
Alan Bradley’s debut, The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie, introduced eleven-year-old Flavia de Luce, passionate about poisons and solving murder, crimes that occur in or near her family’s run down estate, Buckshaw. The novel is set in a fictional English Village in the 1950s. Flavia is clever and hilarious, sort of a Sherlock Holmes meets Miss Marple in the body of a preteen. The series comprises of eight novels to date, with a total of ten planned.
