Securing A Literary Agent Is Bit Like To Trying To Catch The Wind.

A few years ago I made a radical decision; some would call it misguided while others were not so kind with their opinions. After a lifetime scribbling advertising copy for products I didn’t really believe in, coupled with ongoing love/ hate relationships with marketing managers, fresh from graduate schools armed with useless MBA’s, I jumped ship.

Having left the safety of the multi- national agency cocoons to start and run my own agency I endured a decade and a half of what can only be referred to as a period of intense stress. Sure, we produced some truly great work and, on the whole clients were happy (although praise was seldom forthcoming) something in my life was missing. I do believe that everyone at some period in their lives, reaches that so called ‘tipping point’ as I did when the industry was facing yet another downturn. And so I took, what many believed to be a cowardly route by selling out to one of the multi-nationals for whom I used to work.

A series of unlikely events followed and my partner and I found us living in the unlikely location of Bali in Indonesia. A short period of bliss transpired when I continually had to pinch myself to remind myself exactly where I was! It might sound trite but after a few months boredom set in and to save myself from drowning in the local brew I decided to write a novel.

Surprisingly this first book was not as difficult as I thought it would be as sometimes, when you have a good idea the hard bits fall nicely into place. Armed with a bulky manuscript I booked myself into the Ubud International Writers festival and had an extraordinary stroke of luck. I shared a table with a delightful Indian diplomat, Vikas Swarup author of the delightful Q&A, better known by its film adaptation, “Slumdog Millionaire’ who offered some extremely sound advice.

The upshot was that, within weeks I had secured an American publisher who has to date produced four of my follow up novels. All well and good you might say …well actually it’s not. I have fallen in love with the writing process and really, that’s all I want to do…write. (A little self indulgent perhaps) I would prefer to not have to try and market the books myself (even though my current publisher does a passably good job) as I live on a small island close to the equator, far from the madding crowd.

The solution of course was simple. Secure the services of a good literary agent and life would become a lot simpler. And so my quest began in earnest a few months ago when I began to write letters to literary agents around the world. I’m sure I am not alone when I say that even getting a reply from an agent would be easier than securing an audience with the Dalai lama.

I have consulted with the oracles that put out screeds of articles with titles such as, “How to write a killer letter to secure an agent” or “ Ten steps to follow when trying to snare and agent.”  To get this scintillating advice all one has to do is deposit funds into their accounts and they will then hand over the keys to the inner sanctums where agents apparently reside.

Sure, agents are ‘busy’ people and are probably inundated with manuscripts by the truckloads that sit unread in dusty cupboards in their basements but surely they could acknowledge receipt of a manuscript or a letter from time to time.

Technology today surely has the ability to fire back a response along the lines of, “ Thank you for your correspondence and your unsolicited manuscript, which has proved useful as a doorstop for the laundry door. Have you considered a career in plumbing?”

I have had some interest, given that I am published, and this has elicited some short – lived euphoria until my follow up emails go unanswered. I will however remain undaunted in my quest for I have never met a literary agent and I am now immensely curious as to this most elusive of species.

And so, to conclude, if a literary agent does happen to read this piece and it piques your interest (or your conscious) please do respond, if only to point me in the direction of the school of plumbing!

Writer’s Block … there’s no such thing.

I’m not one to beat around the bush, so I won’t do it now when I reinforce my belief that there is no such thing as writer’s block.

Many will vehemently disagree, but these are the writers lazy in their approach to character development, plot lines, creative licence or the realities of time management. Harsh? It’s so easy to blame this mythical black hole in the centre of the brain for the drain on new ideas and vortex-sucking disregard for manuscript deadlines.

Life is an endless journey continually offering new chapters, plot twists and emotional roller coasters and yet we endure these challenges and often embrace them. Given our varied approaches to education, love, career, depression and travel, how on earth do we ever run out of things to communicate?

Our story as human beings is an endless script regarding progression and change and thus the perfect vehicle of inspiration to drive the creative mind further than expectation. So next time you’re huddled on the sofa, scarfing a bowl of chips and coddling your lack of motivation, consider the following ideas to press forward:

Have you been cooped up in your writing space all day, tapping at the keys in the hopes inspiration will hit? Take a break, go outside, breathe fresh air and then return if willing. You’ll be surprised what you missed or what new ideas may occur with clear eyes.
Has your plot lost momentum? Take five, reassess what your story is really about, where it started and how you want it to end. Are there highs and lows? Does the middle build to culminate with an exciting end?
Are your characters dull? Really think about this and perhaps adapt the personality of your story’s creations to the real-life people that inspire you, make you laugh or absolutely incense you.
Check your Emotions! Writing of substance will never occur if your mood is dour, listless or riddled with pressure. Poor attitudes lead to poor results and thus your concentration will lead to negative thoughts circling that drain of what is commonly referred to as ‘writer’s block’.

All-in-all, writing is a gift, a passion pursued by those with an unending desire to scribe their thoughts. Writer’s block is a choice, not an ailment; you can dwell on lack of progress and exacerbate laziness and mental negativity or you can choose to take a breath and reevaluate. The point is not to blame what doesn’t exist, but to take a look at what you can control and how that change in perspective may add a new spark of creativity to a story you’d previously lost hope with.

Tips to Organizing Your Notes

Sometimes, while writing a novel or screenplay, characters, places, and events can get confusing.  My tip for keeping everything straight is to organize your thoughts and plans on index cards.

Start with your characters by writing their names on the front of a card and then write details about that person on the back, such as, appearance, personality quirks or the vehicle that they drive.  If you need more than one card, just staple all the cards together for that particular character.  Alphabetize the characters for easy reference.

Next, jot down the places you want to use as settings for the story.  For example, write the city name on the front of the card and restaurants, street names, and reference buildings on the back side.  Also, you can make a card for characters homes by writing the style/description of the home on the front and drawing the layout on the back.

Then, begin to make cards for the events that you want to happen.  Again, staple multiple cards together if necessary.  The events don’t have to be in order; you can figure that out later.  Once you have figured out the order of events, you may want to number the cards and place them in numerical order at that point.

You may not use all of your initial ideas, and that’s okay, but at least you’ll have something to reference to while writing.  I like to put check marks on the event cards once I have written them into the story.  I use X’s for the events that I have determined just don’t work as originally planned.

Finally, keep all of your cards in an index card box so that they don’t get lost or damaged.  You may want to utilize color dividers to separate the different areas of reference cards.  Happy organizing!

Guerilla Marketing for Authors

Like most writers, I hate marketing my work.  Even with publisher-backed works, it still falls to the author to do much of the marketing. There is a high degree of snobbery in the publishing world today. After all, it took Rowling years before she was able to realize her phenomenal success. But it is even more difficult for indie authors. The assumption is that because a work is self-published, it is somehow not worthy. Sadly, it is up to authors like us to change that mentality through the quality of our work.

I am convinced that the key to getting recognized as an independent author lies in our ability to create a personal brand for ourselves, and the best way to do that is through some of the creative and innovative, low cost strategies used in guerrilla marketing. This technique involves high energy and imagination and focuses on grasping the attention of the public at a more personal and memorable level. Guerrilla marketing is designed to cut through the clutter of traditional advertising so that there is no mystery about what is being advertised. The message is clear and concise.  “This book is unique and different from all the others in this genre because ________.”

This type of marketing works on the subconscious mind, where most purchasing decisions are made. But keeping the book in the mind of the consumer means repetition is needed. The challenge with any guerrilla marketing campaign is not only finding the correct time and place to launch the operation, but also investing the time to sustain the operation. You must promote regularly. Prospective buyers need to see or hear your message multiple times before it will drive them to purchase your book. You must create a buzz around it so that it will be shared among friends and acquaintances. This increases engagement with readers and improves the likelihood that they will share the memorable experience with others. The key is to reach the most people in your target audience as frequently and inexpensively as possible.

As a final word of caution, beware of expensive programs that promise to make you an Amazon Bestseller. These programs take a fraction of the money you pay them and use it to buy copies of your book. While this may make you a temporary best seller, it usually doesn’t affect your long term sales in any significant way.

But take heart. Indie authors and Publish on Demand (POD) is changing the face of publishing in the world. Just 15 years ago, there were legions of travel agencies and agents ready to help busy people with their travel plans. Online travel planning and ticket purchases essentially sent those agencies into extinction.  Literary agencies and agents are already feeling the economic heat of self-publishing, and are next on the list. Groups that ignore self-published works will eventually find themselves in the history books along with Western Union Telegrams.

Consider an Audiobook

According to the latest statistics, audiobooks are now a billion dollar industry. And audiobook sales outstripped print and e-book sales recently. Turning your book into an audiobook now gives you access to a wider audience to convert into fans.

mic-for-audiobooksThe process for getting your book converted into an audiobook is not that hard. It’s easy to work with a narrator/producer directly who takes care of all the details for you.

You can find that narrator/producer through ACX, a freelance site such as Up work, or contact them directly through social media or their website.

It’s most important you choose a narrator whose voice fits your book’s style. Even if you like the narrator’s voice and demo, it’s a good idea for them to narrate at least 5 minutes of your book to confirm the fit.

Your book’s length will determine the cost of the conversion. Every 9000 – 10,000 words represent one hour of narration, so a 20,000-word book is going to be approximately 2 hours long.

For the narrator/producer, the project begins with narrating that first 5-minute segment. Once the contract is complete, the narrator needs a final manuscript delivered in a format such as Word, PDF, or through Kindle. Most narrators use a tablet to narrate nowadays as its quiet.

The narrator/producer reads your book, making notes on pacing, pronunciation, and characters. Getting a character right involves detailed notes and sometimes online investigation. I once watched Speedy Gonzales cartoons to get a character voice right.

The initial narration on a 2-hour book can take as long as 3 hours or more in front of the mic. Then, the narration requires editing for pacing and mistake correction. Most narrator/producers figure 2-3 hours of editing per one hour of narration.

The edited files need mastering to Audible standards, followed by delivery to you for upload to Audible. I often provide mastered files to the author as I go along in the editing process so they can listen in segments rather than getting the files in a big lump.

If the initial quote to convert your book into an audiobook appears a bit steep, think of all the work which goes into the process.  And think about the extra sales and fans you’ll gain.

New authors, learn from my mistakes.

It is almost embarrassing that I learned this entire process the hard way. Maybe I can help you by learning from my mistakes. I only completed the eighth grade. Not my fault, just a fact. I am a story teller, a very good story teller. I am NOT an English major. Publishing a book isn’t only having a good story or a great story teller. There are technicalities that MUST be addressed first.

Ten or eleven years ago, I got in at the very beginning of the self publishing era. If you were fortunate enough to have found a publisher then none of this is for you. I am talking to self published authors. Today everything is different than back then. I only had a couple of choices to go to for self publishing. It cost quite a bit to have this done back then. Now you can realistically self publish for almost nothing. Here is my best piece of advice to all. Don’t rush ahead of yourself, and don’t edit your own book unless you were an English major.

I did just that. I was so anxious to get my book done that I didn’t spend the time, or the money to help myself professionally. I was so sure that a great story is all I needed. I thought people would overlook editing errors because my books were so good. WRONG, I received all 5 star reviews on Amazon. My covers were great, the stories were great. Interest was high and things were moving right along. Until I got my first one star review on Amazon, and it said, “I couldn’t finish this book because of the lack of editing.” Well that was that. I had to stop promoting my books. I just couldn’t sell an inferior product. After spending all that money to publish three of my books, and all for not. At the time I didn’t have the money to completely re-do my books. A few years went by and things happened. Finally my publisher called and said that a Hollywood production company was interested in one of my books. “ENTER” they paid to have Hollywood coverage done on all three of my books. That is where a professional reader does an in depth review of the book, then it goes on a list of producers, actors, and film makers. So anytime these movie people are looking for new content for media, my books are on that list to choose from. Well once I got the reviews back, everyone (including my publisher) was shocked at how good the reviews were. One of them actually said “Could be an Academy award level film.” Soon after that I was contacted by a real publishing company. They wanted to completely re-publish “ENTER” They didn’t want my other two books, just that one. New everything from editing to a new cover and all. I jumped on that and now “ENTER” will be out as a new book next month. After having that happen, I realized this was my opportunity to fix my entire mess. I hired a professional editing company and had both of my other books Edited and re-formatted. I am also going through Amazon (create space) to publish these new versions. Through Amazon, I will make twice as much on each book, and the only cost is to purchase books.

If you need anything from editing, cover design, e-book formatting, or anything you can’t do yourself, Create space has someone who will do it for you at an affordable price. If not, they will walk you through almost anything your books need so you can do it yourself.  Once I got rolling, I went through APEX reviews and had trailers done for all three books for under $300.00 total. They turned out so good, I decided to get “ENTER” done as an Audio book. It too will be done next month. I truly believe that Audio books are the future. Go to Amazon (ACX) and get your book made into audio for free, if you are willing to give up 20% to whomever does it. If you want to do it yourself, you can learn how at ACX also.  If you are not computer savvy, it is worth the 20% to have it done right. Or you can flat out pay for the read and not give up any percentage.  I truly advise that you give it a try.

So here I am, ten years later and it looks like I am going to get another shot at this. Next month my three, edited, books will be out, my audio book will be out, my trailers are done and I have my Hollywood coverage.

I have a good web site and now, if you google my name, I come up first. I am going to use everything I have learned and do this right. I hope through this post, it helps even one new author keep from making just one of the mistakes I made. Maybe it will at least give you some ideas on things you hadn’t thought of. I hope it helps someone.

Thanks for listening

Persistence Is The Key

Being a relatively unknown author I have been reluctant to submit a guest post.

I’ve always felt that should be left to the more successful authors, and I’m determining success, by numbers of books sold.

I do believe, however, that smaller voices such as my own can play a part, albeit small in the overall pond of writing, getting published, and becoming an established author.

Recently our adult daughter visited and determined to assist her ageing father (that’s me) by tidying my study. My wife Carole of 50 years has renamed my study ‘the bunker.’ But the bunker was about to be invaded.

As part of the tidy up files were visited from when I first decided to publish a book back in 2003. Between then and 2012 I worked on my first book. The weighty file in question, held in both hands was of rejections, and about two inches thick. “Dad. What’s all this?” asked our daughter Sara.

I explained that each and every rejection was from a traditional publisher who had chosen not to support my ten years work.

Sara said, “I knew you’d pressed on regardless but had no idea the weight of rejection. I’m proud of you, Dad.”

I do believe our daughter was somewhat emotional. The heavy file was despatched to the recycle bin. I determined nothing would be gained by reliving the pain of rejection multiple times, especially as none had ever given much by way of reason.

To me, their reasons were clearly based on their bottom lines, and risk of non profitability. An unknown author, writing about unknown people who perished in WW2, might not become a best seller overnight. I thanked each and every one for the opportunity – and pressed on.

So to all those writers out there, whether you’ve published or not. Whether you will, or you won’t, whether your work is great, or not so wonderful allow me to say this, “Perseverance is the key. If you want your work to be so safe that no one will ever criticise you or ridicule you, then you’ll likely to never get it off the ground. And, if you seek perfection for your masterpiece, then you’ll likely never to complete the book.

At 71 years of age I have met a multitude of people who’ve said, “One day I’m going to write a book.”

To them I say again, “Why don’t you? It’s not that difficult or I could never have published three, with a fourth in progress.”

Just remember; never give up, persistence is the key, press on regardless. And may your thoughts flow into words that someday, someone like me, shall admire.
