Well-Behaved Women – A Series Overview

What’s it About?

Rose Booker remembers how she died. Both times.

Rose’s pursuit of the truth behind those memories leads her to discover that she was in a past life the legendary pirate queen Mary Read — and that she’s not the only infamous historical figure who has returned from the dead.

Who is this Series For?

Well-Behaved Women is an urban fantasy trilogy featuring a predominantly female cast. I wrote it for everyone looking for an action-packed adventure tale driven by complex heroic (and villainous, and somewhere in-between) LGBTQ women.

Is it Suitable for Young Readers?

No. The series contains violence, language, and sexual content that make it inappropriate for younger readers.

What are the Books in the Series?

Awakening: Nearly a year after being shot and left for dead, Sergeant Rose Booker returns to active duty with the Worcester Police Department, hoping to put the past behind her — except she’s not sure it’s her past that’s haunting her.

When hard-drinking hellraiser Julie d’Aubigny enters Rose’s life, she promises to reveal the truth behind Rose’s nightmares — or are they memories? — of her death at the end of a hangman’s noose.

But first Rose must stop the mysterious madman waging a bloody campaign of vengeance that threatens to turn the city’s streets red. All she has to do is uncover his identity — and his own dark secret.

Transition: The adventure continues as Rose and her friends deal with the aftermath of the events in Awakening and face off against a new, deadlier enemy hellbent on revenge.

Endtimes: Rose, Anna, and Julie face the fight of their lives in the conclusion of the Well-Behaved Women trilogy.

All three titles are available to read for free through Kindle Unlimited, and are available as audiobooks on Audible, narrated by Darci Cole (Target) and Heather Auden.

Weekly Update – November 26, 2024

First, quickly, The Great Rock & Roll Time Trip Tour, is heading out for editing. If my timeline holds, I’ll have the edited manuscript back by the end of the year, and then it’ll be a matter of getting the cover art done, and my artist Tricia is already brainstorming ideas for that.

Now, onto a topic that may be of interest to other writers out there, and maybe to readers as well, and that topic is the hot social media platform known as Bluesky.

I qualify as a “Bluesky Elder,” which means I was among the platform’s earliest adopters, back when you needed an invitation code to get in, so I’ve seen the platform’s growth and improvement, and I am definitely seeing the massive explosion of growth since the election. My own follower count has about tripled over the past two weeks.

But I’m not here to brag about follower counts. I’m here to explain why, if you’ve been holding out on trying Bluesky, you should give it a go.

1: The creative community is huge and growing. Whether you’re a visual or performing artist, you can find your people fairly easily through hashtags, curated follower lists, and “Starter Packs,” which are collections of users that you can skim and follow as you find people who look cool.

2: No algorithm. Trust me, that’s a big deal. If you follow someone and they post? You see it. It’s there in your feed. The site isn’t deciding whether to show it to you based on past interactions, and it’s not pushing your post to other users based on their interactions. Stuff doesn’t get buried by the algorithm.

3: The Nuclear Block. This is the aspect of Bluesky that has been the focus on a fair number of handwringing thinkpieces in the media calling the platform an “echo chamber.” Basically what it means is, if you block someone, they can’t see you anymore, you can’t see them anymore, no one else can see anything that person has posted on your timeline. Coupled with the Bluesky philosophy of “do not engage, just block and move on,” it’s a fantastic tool for stopping the trolls and bad actors cold — which, of course, is why they hate it so much. The shitty people who made Twitter so toxic can’t get a foothold, so the rest of us get to post about our art, our lives, and yes, our politics without some chud coming along to stir shit up — and if they do? They’re unceremoniously blocked so we never have to think of them again.

4: It’s not choked with advertising or monetized up the wazoo. Yet. This may of course change as the platform gets more popular, but for now, it’s a commercialization, capitalism-free space, and I plan to enjoy that for however long it lasts.

5: No AI scraping. The owners have made it clear they don’t scrape content for AI training and plan to keep it that way. Again, this may change, but if the platform remains responsive to its user base, it may not. It’s gaining popularity because it is trying not to be Twitter, and a lot of people want that, so why ruin a good thing?

If you decide to dive in, here is my advice for making the most of it: set up your profile with a proper pic, a bio, and a banner image so people know you’re a real person; search the default feeds (“What’s Hot”) and search hashtags for other users you might want to follow (#writingcommunity is a good one for writers) and then follow them; interact with other users because, remember, no algorithm, and entice them to follow you back by showing them you’re cool; and above all, if someone comes along who behaves like a dick, or gives off bad vibes, or looks like they’re trying to start a flame war, don’t waste time dunking on them, BLOCK AND MOVE ON. And if you want to pass along the offender’s info so others can block as well, always screencap, do not share the OP.

See you over there! I’m at @mbaileywriter.bsky.social

The Adventures of Strongarm & Lightfoot – A Series Overview

What’s it About?

Derek Strongarm and Felix Lightfoot are a pair of hard-luck adventurers for hire with an unfortunate knack for landing jobs that pay too little and threaten their lives too much. Erika Racewind is a hardened elven warrior who doesn’t like people, except maybe when she’s killing them. Winifred Graceword is a kindhearted elven priestess skilled in the healing arts. David is a young sorcerer on a path to discover who he really is — and whether that person has a last name, because going by just “David” is getting old fast.

Together these companions travel across the land of Asaches looking for adventure and the glory and riches that come with it. Mostly the riches, though, because you can’t buy food and beer with glory.

Who is this Series For?

Sword-and-sorcery fantasy fans looking for something a little lighter than most of the fare currently on the shelves. If you want heavy, dark, serious stories with lots of death, destruction, torture, rape, and political intrigue, go read something else because you won’t find it here.

What you will find is a fast-paced adventure filled with colorful characters, rip-roaring action, humor, and gentle jabs at the classic elements of fantasy fiction.

Which is not to say this series is a comedy or parody. There is still drama aplenty, but as a rule I don’t take things too seriously. You can read these books and not feel like you need a hug and a room full of puppies afterward.

Basically, if you like fare like The Legend of Vox Machina and Dungeons and Dragons – Honor Among Thieves, this is the series for you.

Is it Suitable for Young Readers?

Not really. The series is a hard PG-13/light R for violence, language, and sexual content. It is suitable for older teens, but not for the YA crowd.

What are the Books in the Series?

Scratching a Lich: Derek and Felix find themselves entangled in an urgent quest to slay a legendary lich before he can trigger a world-ending apocalypse – as insane undead sorcerers are wont to do. Together with Erika Racewind, bodyguard for a mysterious young wizard named David, and Winifred Graceword, they head out to discover lost cities, recover long lost magical artifacts, and slay great evils in order to fulfill curiously specific prophecies – as mismatched, ragtag groups of adventurers are wont to do.

Assassins Brawl: The companions are hired to safeguard a spoiled brat of a princess targeted for death by the assassin Ruined Isys, but as is often the case, there’s more going on here than meets the eye. Now all they have to do is determine who is behind the plot before they get caught in the crossfire.

Blades of Glory: Derek, Felix, and company are up for a job that seems a little too simple for a payday that seems a little too generous – but unfortunately, so are the famed adventurers of fortune known as the Noble Blades. Which of them will be the first to find a stolen ceremonial mask that is absolutely positively completely normal and not at all some lost artifact possessed of dark power?

Sworded Affairs: The company takes a job to dispose of a potentially dangerous magical artifact only to become snowbound in an isolated city besieged by flesh-hungry beasts — and under assault from within by a dark conspiracy.

Elfish Motives: Winifred Graceword is called home under mysterious circumstances, which lead to the company revisiting the lost even city of Wihend. But what do the four clans want with their long-abandoned ancestral home?

Twins and Losses: The company finally returns home to Ambride, only to become immediately embroiled in a scandal threatening to consume the Ambride Academy of Magic.

Draconian Measures: David is charged with a diplomatic mission that could unite Asaches’s fractured magical academies, but first he has to contend with a maniacal warden, political upheaval, and an enormous dragon terrorizing the coastal city of Atebo.

Untitled book eight: The companions find themselves in the middle of a power struggle that threatens to tear apart their adopted home of Ambride. Tentatively set for a late 2024/early 2025 release.

The Final Summons – An Anthology of the New England Speculative Writers: Featuring The Going Rate For Penance, a short story set in the Strongarm & Lightfoot world. Mercenaries Jessica and Samantha Summerland receive an assignment from their least favorite client, and one way or another, this will be their last job.

How Long Will the Series Run?

Unknown, but tentatively ten books.

Are They Available As Audiobooks?

The first four books, narrated by Heather S. Auden, are currently available on Audible.

Weekly Update – November 19, 2024

Some good news on the writing front! My current project, The Great Rock & Roll Time Trip Tour, is out to beta readers for feedback, and I have an editor lined up to tackle the project when it’s ready for that stage of the process.

That last bit is a big deal because this will be the first project in several years that will not be handled by my usual editor, Julie Tremblay. She’s got a lot going on right now and let me know she’d be temporarily unavailable, but she was able to put me in touch with a friend, Kim Budnick, who graciously stepped up to offer her services. I’ve been chatting with her to get it all set up, and she’ll be ready to hit the ground running when she gets the manuscript.

I’m hoping to have the novella available in the first quarter of 2025. After that, I’ll be aiming to release the first Legacies book, and I apologize to the Action Figures fans out there who’ve been waiting patiently for the new story. I hope it will be worth the wait.

Anyway, what is the Time Trip Tour about? Here is the official summary:

Anyone can follow their favorite rock star across the country.

Tina Tharpe can follow hers across time.

She doesn’t understand how this bizarre ability works. All she knows is, a couple of edibles and a vinyl record are her ticket to the great concerts of the past, from Woodstock to Budokan to Monterey, and she’s going to make the most of it.

It’s the perfect escape from the dark cloud hanging over her head at WWMA-FM, Worcester’s rock masters. Rumors are swirling that the station’s corporate overlords might be ditching the classic rock format and changing to pop, country, or worst of all, Christian contemporary — and that would put Tina and her fellow DJs out of a job.

Eager to put her worries out of sight and out of mind, Tina dives headfirst into the past. Problem is, her time trips might be having an unexpected effect on the future (or is it the present?) as she returns to find that pivotal events in rock history have radically changed —  and not necessarily for the better.

The Great Rock & Roll Time-Trip Tour is the new novella by Michael C. Bailey, author of the award-winning fantasy series The Adventures of Strongarm & Lightfoot (BellaOnline Literary Review, Best Fantasy Novel), and the YA superhero series Action Figures, a #1 bestseller on Amazon.

Action Figures – A Series Overview

What’s it About?

The series focuses on Carrie Hauser, a 15-year-old girl who one summer experiences two life-changing events: her parents announce they’re getting divorced, and she gains superhuman abilities after encountering a dying extraterrestrial after he falls to Earth.

Her adventure begins after Carrie and her mother Christina move back to Christina’s childhood home town of Kingsport, Massachusetts, and Carrie meets four teens with powers of their own: superhero fanboy Matt Steiger, who owns a pair of magic gloves that can produce any object he can envision out of thin air, like a living cartoon character; Sara Danvers, a telepath and telekinetic who is afraid of her own abilities; the easygoing Stuart Lumley, who possesses superhuman strength; and Missy Hamill, an adorable motormouth with enhanced strength and reflexes.

The teens form a superhero team almost on a whim, but soon find themselves fighting for their lives against very real super-villains – much to the dismay of Kingsport’s hometown hero Concorde, leader of the super-team The Protectorate.

Who is this Series For?

Fans of superhero comics, TV shows, and movies in general, but particularly of titles featuring teen heroes such as Young Justice, Teen Titans, Young Avengers, and Champions.

The tone is generally lighter than a lot of YA books out there now. While there is drama and conflict, and some later stories deal with darker issues, I try to keep the series fun, upbeat, and optimistic.

Is it Suitable for Young Readers?

Action Figures is a PG-13 series that contains mild to moderate profanity, non-graphic violence, some mature themes, and later on in the series mild sexual content.

An added word about the violent content: while the violence is not graphic, the consequences are not downplayed. This isn’t sanitized Hollywood violence. People get hurt just as they would in real life and do not easily shrug off injuries, and in some cases the characters have to deal with the emotional trauma of their experiences.

What are the Books in the Series?

Action Figures – Issue One: Secret OriginsCarrie and her new friends in the Hero Squad (yes, they know their team name is awful) find themselves caught in the crossfire as the deadly mercenary Manticore comes to Kingsport, on the hunt for the rogue artificial intelligence known as Archimedes. Soon to be available through Audible!

Action Figures – Issue Two: Black Magic Women – The sorceress Black Betty threatens to raise hell – maybe literally – as she pursues her vendetta against the Protectorate’s resident paranormal expert Dr. Enigma.

Action Figures – Issue Three: Pasts Imperfect – Missy’s life is turned upside-down when she learns the truth about the source of her powers, and her connection to the bloodthirsty killer Buzzkill Joy.

Action Figures – Issue Four: Cruel SummerSara finds herself in the crosshairs of the mysterious hero killer the King of Pain, but to save herself, she might have to sacrifice everything she holds dear.

Action Figures – Issue Five: Team-UpsThe Hero Squad, still reeling from their devastating encounter with the King of Pain, get a little help picking up the pieces from their friends in the Protectorate and the Quantum Quintet.

Action Figures – Issue Six: Power Play – The Squad finds itself outnumbered and under-powered after one of their members goes missing – and at the worst possible time as foes from their past reappear, more dangerous than ever and ready to exact revenge.

Action Figures – Issue Seven: The Black End War – On Earth, Carrie Hauser is a hero, but on the far side of the galaxy, she’s just another soldier on the front lines of an interplanetary war against the terrorists in the Black End.

Action Figures – Issue Eight: Crawling from the Wreckage – Carrie returns to Earth to reclaim her life, but life has moved on without her. Does she have a place with her team, her friends, or her family anymore?

Action Figures – Issue Nine: Hell Hath No Fury – Black Betty is back, and ready to unleash Hell — literally, but can the Hero Squad trust Dr. Enigma to have their backs? Or does she have her own dark agenda?

Action Figures – Issue Ten: Unintended Consequences – The Hero Squad learns that hard way that no good deed goes unpunished and the sins of their past have not been forgotten.

Action Figures – Issue Eleven: Zero Day – It’s the final showdown between the Hero Squad and ShadoWorks, in this, the epic conclusion to the Action Figures core series.

Action Figures: Legacies – In the wake of Zero Day, Aja Pershing, daughter of the murderous Manticore, finds herself on a collision course with the latest young woman to adopt the mantle of the vigilante known as the Silhouette. The first sequel to the core Action Figures series. Tentatively set for mid-2024 release.

The Action Figures Omnibus – Volume One: Stepping Up – Collects the first three books in the series (Secret Origins, Black Magic Women, Pasts Imperfect) and features a new foreward by Patrick Hodges and a new introduction by the author.

Beneath the Mask: A Superhero Romance Anthology – Features the superhero noir tale Like a Knife in the Heart featuring the Sapphire Silhouette. Set in the Action Figures universe. Currently out of print.

How Long Will the Series Run?

The core series has finished its run, ending with issue eleven. Two spinoff titles are currently in the early planning stages, with the first of those books, Legacies, set for a 2024 release.

Weekly Update – November 12, 2024

How’s everyone doing? Seriously, how are you doing?

If the answer is, “Shitty. I’m angry and scared,” then yeah, I’m right there with you. Last week did not turn out how I’d hoped — how it should have turned out. A lot of people in my life are, like you, angry and scared. Probably more the latter.

Among those angry, scared people are all the queer and POC creatives who are now terrified that their work won’t have any commercial venues what with Bezos being under Trump’s thumb. See, if you (somehow) didn’t know about this, Project 2025 — the right’s roadmap for royally fucking up everything for everyone — includes language that indicates they could declare any queer entertainment media such as stories about trans people obscene material, subject to criminal prosecution for those who create or distribute it. That latter category includes libraries, which are the only place some people can obtain that kind of material.

There are trans people in some of my stories. In a worst-case scenario, I could be subject to arrest and prosecution as a pornographer.

Don’t say it can’t happen. Don’t say I’m fearmongering or overreacting, because that just makes me thing you’re either A: a MAGA cultist pulling their usual gaslighting bullshit, or B: naïve as all hell. Either way, I have no use for you, yeet yourself into an active volcano.

If you’re a creator of such material, I honestly don’t know what to tell you. I’m still figuring it out myself.

If you’re a reader, you might want to get any digital material in physical form if possible, so it can’t be taken off your e-reader by anyone. You also might want to stay in contact with your favorite creators via social media so they can let you know in real time what’s going on. I have several social media presences (you can find the list here), but I do most of my author stuff on Bluesky.

November 5, 2024

Weekly Update – November 5, 2024

November already? Yikes. Anyway, a couple of important things.

First, quickly, is my suggestion to skip formal participation in NaNoWriMo this year, for reasons I’ve gone into before, so I won’t rehash them now.

Second: if you have no voted already, today’s the day to get that done, and I’m going to urge you in the strongest possible terms to vote for Kamala Harris.

At this stage I’m betting some of you are rolling your eyes and getting ready to chastise me for being political, I’m a writer and I should stick to writing, which prompts me to ask: have you actually read my work? I strive for diversity and inclusion in the characters. My themes are steeped in feminism, sex positivity, and allyship for the queer community. My work is reflective of my beliefs. It’s been political all along, and if you haven’t noticed that by now, I don’t know what to tell you.

As for using this website as a platform for those beliefs? Well, I feel a responsibility to use whatever little influence I might have in the world to try to do good, and I believe that of the two candidates available to us, Harris is the good one — and if you vehemently deny that, I’m not going to try to persuade you otherwise. You’ve already bought fully into the laughable idea that the selfish, short-sighted, increasingly erratic, easily exhausted, petulant, vengeance-starved narcissist with vague but terrible plans for the country and no grasp of how any of our systems actually work is the best choice, and there’s no convincing you that isn’t true.

I won’t dignify any arguments about third-party candidates with a response. They’re not going to win and voting for them will affect no more change than it did any other year. Same goes for anyone who says they’re not voting “out of principle.” If you had principles, you’d participate in your society and not stay home and feel smug about yourself and pretend you’re taking a stand against anything.

If this post loses me any fans or followers, assume I’ve inserted the Elmo Shrug GIF here. I honestly don’t know why you followed me to begin with, and your absence isn’t going to diminish me at all.

I realize my tone here is pretty belligerent, but the fact is, the MAGA movement has already harmed the women and queer people in my life, and threatens to do worse if, somehow, Trump returns for a second term, and the fact that is still a possible reality angers me beyond words. You do not tell people you love them and then vote for someone who will hurt them, full stop.

Anyway. Go vote, vote for Harris, and I’ll see you here next week (or not?) with news about the new project.

Weekly Update – October 22, 2024

A bit of a slow week this week. I’m writing, I’m trying to relax and recover from last weekend’s trials and tribulations, and I expect to do more of each next week when I’m on staycation with my wife. The most ambitious things we have planned is maybe a hike with the dogs, weather pending, and we’re going to catch our ridiculously talented friend Livy in the annual Edgar Allan Poe Double Header at the JMAC Brick Box Theatre in Worcester, MA. It’s a fun night, so if you’re in central Massachusetts, want something Halloweeny to do, and want to avoid the madness of Salem, here you go!
