4 must have Cambodian experiences

Cambodia is one of those places that most travelers forget about when they are mapping out their itineraries. This oft overlooked traveling destination is one of the most exciting places I’ve ever visited. Now, this wasn’t my first visit to Cambodia, but it was definitely my favorite trip. Here are some of the experiences that I had that I think that anybody traveling to Cambodia should try at least once. Fair warning, these aren’t experiences like bungee jumping, swimming with piranhas, or climbing mountains; they are cultural experiences that gave me a better sense of the people and – of course – the food in Cambodia. In my opinion, these types of experiences trump adrenaline-fueled ventures every time.

Phnom Da and Angkor Borei

Phnom Da is without a doubt the best place to experience the history of Cambodia. Phnom Da is a Brahman temple on a hill built in the 6th century. The temple and the surrounding man-made caves contain impressive carvings. This area was also used as a hideout for Viet Cong during the war. While there is some damage to the temple itself and some statues, it is still in relatively good condition, making it a popular destination for tourists and Cambodians alike who are looking to learn a little history.

To reach Phnom Da, you must go through the city of Angkor Borei. The city is ancient. Not only is it old, full of Buddhist shrines, and carvings that are fantastic, it has been continuously inhabited for the past 2,500 years. If you really want to experience and meet the people of Cambodia, this is the place to do it. Everyone I met there was very kind and helpful. I learned a lot about the past and the present on my trip through Angkor Borei on my way to Phnom Da.

Note: because of the war, the road between Angkor Borei and Phnom Da is not in the best condition. If it’s been especially rainy, it may be difficult to travel by. If there has been flooding, it will be impossible. So, as usual when travelling, keep an eye on the road and weather conditions. However, I would suggest that, rather than asking Siri, you ask the local people in Angkor Borei about the road. They know more than Siri.

Tonle Bati

Tonle Bati is a small lake with temples near its edges. The two temples nearest are Ta Prohm and Yeay Peau. Here’s what I did and suggest that you do: in the morning, I stopped by two temples and got my fill of culture and history; in the afternoon, I relaxed by the lake and got to talk with many of the local people. They were warm and inviting. Sort of the opposite of backwoods Arkansas.

To speak more to the temples, Ta Prohm is the bigger of the two and really quite impressive, mostly because most tourists who come to this region just go to the lake to relax. Many of the carvings that I saw there were the best preserved carvings that I saw on my entire trip. Yeay Peau is also impressive, but for different reasons. It is a single sandstone tower and a pagoda, each with beautiful carvings inlaid. The pagoda is worth a visit because there are still Buddhists who visit it today. These last two places I visited while I was staying in Phnom Penh. The next two experiences were while I was staying in Siem Reap

New Hope

New Hope Cambodia is located in Siem Reap. New Hope is a Non-Government Organization that aims to try to help those in poverty, the ill, and the malnourished, traits all too common in Cambodia. They do this by teaching the people new skills and giving them employment. After the mass genocide that only ended two decades ago, it is more important than ever to invest in the future of Cambodia and its children. By doing so, New Hope is actually giving hope to those who would have otherwise had none.

New Hope also has a restaurant with outstanding food. By far the best food I had during my stay in Cambodia. Also, since the money went to a good cause my belly and my soul were simultaneously warmed. Often when traveling, money is spent carelessly and needlessly. Eating at the New Hope restaurant is a great reminder that there is still suffering at popular travel destinations and people still need help.

Tuk-Tuking

I know I said that I’m not into adrenaline-junkie experiences, but this one was an accident. While I was in Siem Reap, I took a ride on a tuk-tuk. A tuk-tuk is a three wheeled, four-man carriage that is not only fun to say, but fun to ride (if a little scary). While the driver was cool, calm, and under control, I was a wreck. Tuk Tuks are also when you are enjoying a holiday in Thailand or Indonesia. 

I do wish that I had gone to the bathroom before we left because I was close to wetting myself every time we swept around a corner or stopped on a dime. I thought we were going to tip on more than one occasion. While it was kind of a scary experience, I would definitely do it again (on an empty bladder, though).

I wholly advocate planning a trip to Cambodia. Experiencing the food, the people, and the culture is the most important part of travelling.
