Daddy and the MPs
by Alarie Tennille

World War II

Daddy was a flashy dresser –
added a tartan tie and derby
to his drab uniform.

“You’re in trouble this time,”
said Daddy’s buddy Dale
as the MPs approached.
Sure enough they got stopped.

“Button your pocket,”
they told Dale before walking on –
just a nod to Daddy.

Cigarettes, chocolates, booze,
favorite rations traded with the Brits –
whatever could make war
a little less hell, Master Sergeant
Tennille provided.

I laughed every time I heard it.
A paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne
didn’t have many stories
he could tell his little girl.

"Two Women" by Alarie Tennille

Two Women by Alarie Tennille

Two Women, by Leonor Fini, 1939.

Two Women

Every “can’t believe SHE
is YOUR sister” spikes acid
through my veins.

Shouldn’t my little sister shadow
me, copy my moves? Not her.
She arrived an adult, no, a presence,
wrapped in a precious, doll-sized body.
As she grew, I faded.

I pretended she wasn’t there,
even while crouching at key holes,
trying to make sense of her –
the strut, the here I am! tsunami
when she enters a room.

Surely she can’t wear lit candles
in her hair, but I see them. Others
just see the glow.

Like Minded on Ekphrastic

This is one of my darkest ekphrastic (written to art) poems. The sculpture will show you why. I'm not often drawn to modern sculpture, but this grouping on the lawn of The Nelson-Atkins Museum here in Kansas City spoke to me.

Alarie's Ekphrastic Poetry

I've been a lifelong art lover. My family didn't care a thing about art, so I spent hours looking at the Paintings listing in the World Book Encyclopedia as a child. I wanted to be an artist until writing became my top passion, so I still turn to art for inspiration. You can imagine my delight in finding a new journal online devoted to the art and literature connection.

Ekphrastic accepted four of my poems. they published the first two today. The others will appear in February.

I hope you enjoy them.

Happy New Year!

First published in The Kansas City Star (2007)
Resolutions
The trees fan
sharpened pencils
toward the paper-white sky.
I take one and write,
surprised by my childishly
round a’s, at how my l’s
and t’s lean together
like they’re staggering home
new year’s eve.
Though the lines slant
upward, they look unsure.
Trying to erase, I only
smear the gray and wish
for a red crayon.
The wind sighs, but the sky
patiently lays out another
blank sheet, saying,
“Try again.”
