The thin scratches of sleet across the window drew his attention from the fire and led his gaze further into the garden. The lawn, stagnant since early winter, lay dishevelled beneath a film of frost. A line of leafless trees marked the boundary between his property and the desolate country lane. Lean and twisted, their skeletal branches seemed to beckon him, their silent longing etched against the stark December sk...

‘We were just talking about the skiing trip,’ Briony shouted over the music, ‘and that time when Miles crapped in the Bidet.’

She emphasised the word and broke it into two syllables, and on hearing it, the three girls who stood by the window burst into hysterics. They took it as their cue, hurrying over to Briony and forming a small circle around her. The said offender, Miles, loitered at Briony’s side.
