Empress Theodora

Theodora (c.497-548) was born in Constantinople – modern day Istanbul. In her remarkable life she became probably the most powerful woman in Byzantine history. Little is known about her early years, and it is hard to sort fact from fiction in such a colourful story.

The daughter of a bear keeper at Constantinople’s hippodrome, Theodora was put to work there herself at an early age as an actress, dancer, mime artist and comedian. Performing for hundreds of spectators, by the age of 15 she wa...

“It’s a horror movie, right there on my TV/ Horror movie, right there on my TV/ Horror movie, and it’s blown a fuse/ Horror movie, it’s the six thirty news….” – Horror Movie (Skyhooks).

How do I even begin to describe to my wider audience who Skyhooks are? In short, they were a pre punk glam rock band that had incredible success in Australia during the mid 1970’s. Dressed in theatrical glam rock costumes and combined with their amusing social commentar...

A Chat with a Ghost

Windows into History

houseCreepy History 21. In 1681 clergyman Joseph Glanvill wrote Sadducismus Triumphatus, exploring the world of the supernatural, with a particular focus on witches and ghosts. He had a strong belief in this sort of thing, and felt that denying their existence was a step towards atheism. His work contains a collection of anecdotal evidence of the existence of ghosts. The following quote is one example:

David Hunter, neat-herd at the Bishop’s house at Portmore, there appeared...

Works of famed Lowcountry artist go on display in Charleston

The Cotton Boll Conspiracy

mending-a-break

Artist Alice Ravenel Huger Smith was both enigmatic and straightforward.

The famed Carolina Lowcountry painter (1876-1958) took classes at the Carolina Art Association in the 1890s but otherwise was largely self-taught. She disdained travel and few outside influences are evident in her work.

She has been criticized in recent years for presenting images of an idealized antebellum South, featuring “happy ‘darkies’ and benevolent masters,” according to one modern his...

Never Forget: The Devil’z Punchbowl – 20,000 Freed Slavez Died After Being Forced Into Post Slavery Koncentration Kamp

Moorbey'z Blog

History has always made concentration camps to be synonymous with the atrocities of Nazi Germany. But, America has its own dirty secrets about the use of concentration camps. These camps were located in Natchez, Mississippi and were used to corral freed slaves during and after the American Civil War. As slaves were being emancipated from the plantations, their route to freedom usually took them in the vicinity of the Union army forces. Unhappy with the slaves being freed, th...

Knights Templar: Cathedral of the Pyrenees

Crusader History

cathedral-of-the-pyrenees

The village of Saint Betrand de Comminges has a long history dating back to 72BC, when the Roman colony of “Lugdunum Convernarum” was established by Pompey, a Roman General, with a population close to 30,000 people.

The city was destroyed by vandals in 408 AD and again in 585, when it suffered a similar fate, at the hands of Gontrand of Orleans, King of the Franks.

In 1073, Bertrand was nominated to the post of Bishop by Count Raymond IV of Toulouse, his cousin. Ten years l...

The Vampire of Barcelona

History Witch

enriquetamarti

Sorry for the content. This story is rather gruesome.

Enriqueta Marti (1868 – 1913) was a child murderer that conducted some of the most horrific crimes in the worst poverty stricken sections of Barcelona, Spain.

At the time, Barcelona’s population quadrupled in size and with the political turmoil, daily violent uprisings, and lack of resources… awful, unspeakable things happened.

Enriqueta began her career in prostitution, which led her down a very dark and twisted road. She...

Recalling a Canadian writer’s memory of distressed Wales

The Cotton Boll Conspiracy

rhondda-mawr

If one travels for any length of time, one is bound to experience an unhappy adventure or two. What turns a miserable traveling experience into one that can be looked back on with, if not fondness, than at least a smile is the ability to take something away from the experience, be it a lesson, a memory or the ability to count one’s blessings.

George Woodcock (1912-1995) was a noted Canadian writer of political biography and history, an anarchist thinker and a lite...
