The thought of sending eggs in today's post is quite frankly laughable, even with fragile tape, special containers and pleas for caution, things don't always arrive in the condition that one would like but during World War II eggs became a rare and special cargo.



Rationing restricted adults to one fresh egg per week and families were forced to rely on dried egg powder sent over...

When The SockKids Were Born

That November night was an evening like so many others, cold and dreary. It would end up being extraordinary.

My two daughters, separated by four years and divided on so many subjects, were in perfect disharmony again over another silly issue. One daughter wanted the window down for some fresh air while the other demanded more heat.


I kept my cool for the initial spurt of acrimonious words, offering a compromise by lowering the window halfway.

Marjorie Bruce, Princess of Scotland, was the only child of the first marriage of King Robert I the Bruce with Isabella of Mar. Marjorie would suffer greatly through the Scottish Wars of Independence, surviving to marry and become the mother of the child who would go on to found the Stewart dynasty of Kings.


As the wars for Scottish independence from England raged, Robert the Bruce, Earl of Carrick, was one of the leaders of the fight.

"If I had two heads, I would gladly give him one," Christina of Denmark is supposed to have quipped, when Henry VIII was proposed as a future bridegroom. This particular young woman had no desire to end up as one of the English king’s discarded wives – especially not as so many of them ended up dead.

Whatever Christina’s opinion in the matter, Hans Holbein was dispatched to do her portrait so that Henry could peruse her likeness.
