Ellen Axson: Georgia Peach

The life of Ellen Axson Wilson (1860-1914) was bookended by war: Born in Georgia, just as the cannons of the Civil War were getting ready to boom, died when the cannons of World War I were about to do the same.

Thoughts have power and you must make them with conviction

Have a great day and have a good look at your life, as it’s ok to be different.

Why Writing Keeps Me Sane

Writing for me has always been a way for me to express myself, whether I am happy, sad, angry or just full of ideas and need to get them out. I often wake up in the middle of the night with an idea for a story or in some cases just a name for a character that has yet to tell a story. I am sure most writers are bombarded with ideas in their head that they just have to write down and store for future use. I keep a notebook and pen everywhere I go and just about every ro...

Who is this Victorian man dangling from the ceiling?

Slipping Beneath the Skin: Thoughts on Conjuring Characters

Originally posted on PORTALS AND PATHWAYS:

Every author has favorite parts of the writing process, or particular strengths or weaknesses. One of my passions in storytelling is characterization. I don’t like reading books about one-dimensional characters who act like their personalities came off of statistic sheets in a Dungeons and Dragons game, and I don’t write people like that, either.

Yes, I said ‘write people.’ That’s the key to good characterization—don’t ‘create characters.’ Characters...
