REVIEW: A DEAD HUSBAND (A Jessica Huntington Desert Cities Mystery Book#1) by Anna Celeste Burke

Synopsis (from Amazon)

Jessica Huntington, rich, beautiful, and smart, seeks refuge from betrayal in a desert paradise near Palm Springs only to discover life is full of surprises...like a dead husband. Jessica Huntington is hiding out from her own well-planned life, now in shambles. Her law career tanked by the Great Recession, she failed miserably as a desperate housewife in the Silicon Valley playing beat-the-clock with her 30-something hormones. In the end she put on a little baby fat, but no baby. The final blow: walking in on her husband in bed with a well-known Hollywood blond. The Rancho Mirage home where she grew up, surrounded by the beauty of the desert resort town near Palm Springs, seems the perfect place to take refuge. That is until her best friend's husband is murdered. Jessica and her friends are soon thrust into the fray stalked by scoundrels in pantyhose, stilettos, Bruno Magli shoes, and Armani suits. Roger Stone had something that got him killed. What was it and to what lengths will they go to get it back?

This is the first in the Jessica Huntington Desert Cities Mystery Series

ReviewJessica Huntington is self-absorbed and self-destructing, but able to shift her focus when her good friend's husband Roger is killed and Laura is the prime suspect. Jessica's friends are an unusual combination including St. Bernadette, Jessica's caregiver since she was a child, Brien the pool guy, Tommy, her like a brother friend, Jerry, the hunky PI and Peter, the lawyer she hasn't seen since she graduated from law school.  As she finds herself involved with some pretty scary people, her divorce and louse of a husband become less of a focus.  Nothing like a murder to make her more responsible. She even can see some new beginnings if she manages to survive.
The characters are fun even for someone who isn't up on shoe designers. They also are unique enough that anyone would easily find one they could relate to. The story has  a lot more shopping than I could ever do, many twists and turns that keep it interesting, and moves along quickly. I'm looking forward to the second in the series, A DEAD SISTER.

BLOG TOUR: MURDER OUT OF TUNE : A Libby Sarjeant Murder Mystery by Lesley Cookman

Synopsis
The fourteenth book in the Libby Sarjeant series of British murder mysteries which features a retired actress as the female sleuth and are based in the picturesque village of Steeple Martin.

A member of a local ukulele group is found dead in Steeple Martin's churchyard. Libby's first reaction is relief that the victim isn't anyone she knows. She and the usual suspects have other things to occupy them as they are gearing up for a Christmas concert and pantomime in the Oast Theatre but when Libby's cousin gets romantically involved with a man in whom the police are taking an interest, she can't help asking a few questions – and getting into trouble…

Review Libby Sarjeant and her group of friends, mostly actor and theatre-types, of Steeple Martin are back. As Ben keeps reminding Libby, she is not involved when a ukelele player is found murdered in the churchyard. True to her 'nosy' nature, though, Libby and her friend Fran investigate. After all, the ukulele players have a spot in the concert in the village of Steeple Martin. Libby's interest increases when her cousin comes to visit and seems smitten with the prime suspect. There are other suspects though, and Libby has many false starts in solving the murder leading the reader astray and the story moving forward. Cookman keeps us guessing until the end.

This can be read as a stand alone. Background on Libby's friendship with the lead detective and the theatre group is sufficient. The descriptions of Steeple Martin and the surrounding small towns are well done. The small town busybody and inevitable conflicts add to the story. Having read others in the series, Libby's inquisitive and stubborn personality hasn't changed much, but Ben seems to have more tolerance!

Reflections on the Blog Tour for Murder in the Arboretum

It was a very busy month for Sheridan, Brett, and the rest of the Cold Creek community!  Great Escapes/Escape with DollyCas Into a Good Book did a wonderful job and the all the bloggers were great! Here are some highlights of the reviews:

The story is so good you will be hooked from the start and eagerly wanting more when it is over.
~Shelley’s Book Case

This is a great mystery that kept me guessing as to who the murderer was and I really enjoyed that.
~Community Bookstop

I enjoy this set of mysteries.
~readalot

If you like writing that is has an intelligent feel to it, while not being overbearing, Murder in the Arboretum should be on your TBR list or shelf for this year. Ms. Nardi’s writing is both educational and entertaining, a difficult duo to master.
~Back Porchervations

This is a good mystery and a good story, one that I found both fun and interesting.
~THe GaL iN THe BLue MaSK

Murder in the Arboretum was a fast-paced mystery that just seemed to grab you from the very beginning.
~Books-n-Kisses

I finished reading, Murder in the Arboretum the second book by Christa Nardi’s in her Cold Creek Series and I liked it just as much as I did the first in this series.
~3 Partners in Shopping – Nana, Mommy, &; Sissy too!

The author goes into great detail and it gives the reader a good visual of where and what is happening. It’s almost as if you are right in the middle of the scene.~Socrates Book Review
These bloggers are hosting different authors and their books every day, so do check them out!  For me, it's back to the writing and editing process for Book #3!

BLOG TOUR & GUEST POST by TRACI ANDRIGHETTI

It is my pleasure to have as my guest today, Traci Andrighetti:

Five Fun Facts (or should I say “Pertinent Points”?) about Prosecco Pink!

By Traci Andrighetti

1.The title

You may have noticed from Limoncello Yellow, Prosecco Pink, and “Rosolio Red” (my short story in Cozy Christmas Capers) that my titles involve an Italian liqueur or wine and a color. I came up with this theme thanks to Italian author Gabriella Genisi, who often uses a fruit and a color in her titles. In an ironic twist, I recently signed a contract to translate her Inspector Lolita Lobosco series from Italian into English for Gemma Halliday Publishing. So, look for my translation of the first Genisi novel, The Circumference of Oranges, to come out later this year.

2.The plantation home

As my book blurb and the cover of Prosecco Pink indicate, the murder of the cosmetics CEO takes place at a fictitious sugar cane plantation called Oleander Place. My plantation home (and the cool objects inside it) was inspired by the antebellum Greek revival mansion known as Oak Alley Plantation in Vacherie, Louisiana. But the legend involving the death of the original mistress of Oleander Place was inspired by a tragic story from Myrtles Plantation in St. Francisville, Louisiana, involving a house slave named Chloe and an oleander plant.

3. The pirates

I’m not normally into pirates and pirate legends, but they’re hard to escape in New Orleans since it was the stomping grounds of the notorious pirate Jean Lafitte (1780-1823). So, the two bars I mention in my book, Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop Bar and Jean Lafitte’s Old Absinthe House are real places, not my inventions. Also quite real, hilariously enough, is the annual pirate festival “Shore Leave” held on Bourbon Street by the pirate-minded social organization NOLA Wenches. Can you imagine the French Quarter overrun by pirates? Blimey!

4.The graduate student

One of my favorite aspects of Prosecco Pink involves the PhD History student, Troy Wilson. I was once a graduate student of history, so I had tons of fun with this story line (and I can’t wait for some of my old classmates to read it). I can’t tell you too much about Troy because it would give away the ending. But suffice it to say that it’s an extremely dull and difficult program—one that often causes students to lose touch with reality. But not me, though. I ran screaming!.

5. “The vassal”

Besides being a graduate student at the University of Texas at Austin, I was also a Lecturer of Italian. The character of “the vassal,” a Tulane freshman fraternity pledge who is assigned to do the bidding of David Savoie (Franki’s part-time research assistant) by their Computer Science frat, was inspired by an incident in one of my Italian classes involving a six-foot-seven-inch freshman fraternity pledge and two short seniors. The freshman was not only assigned by his fraternity to drive the two seniors around, but they also made him wear only long sleeved shirts, blue jeans, and cowboy boots in the Texas heat. When the freshman mysteriously lost his boots at a football game, the seniors told him he had to go barefoot for the rest of the year. I pointed out to the freshman (in front of the seniors) that he was big enough to kick both of them to the curb—with his bare feet. The next day he wore shoes to class. ;)
I hope you enjoy reading Prosecco Pink as much as I enjoyed writing it!

About This AuthorTraci Andrighetti is the author of the Franki Amato Mysteries. In her previous life, she was an award-winning literary translator and a Lecturer of Italian at the University of Texas at Austin, where she earned a PhD in Applied Linguistics. But then she got wise and ditched that academic stuff for a life of crime–writing, that is.

If she’s not hard at work on her next novel, Traci is probably watching her favorite Italian soap opera, eating Tex Mex or sampling fruity cocktails, and maybe all at the same time. She lives in Austin with her husband, young son (who desperately wants to be in one of her
books) and three treat-addicted dogs.

Synopsis of Prosecco Pink

For Franki Amato, life in New Orleans is anything but “The Big Easy.” When she met handsome bank executive Bradley Hartmann, she knew she’d finally found a man she could trust. But she can’t say the same for his sexy new secretary, who is about as trustworthy as Mata Hari and every bit as seductive. Meanwhile, Franki’s best friend and employer, Veronica Maggio, has named her the lead investigator in the murder of a gorgeous cosmetics CEO who was found lying dead in the master bedroom of a historic plantation home.

Now the pressure is on Franki to figure out what a bottle of pink lip gloss and the legend of a pink diamond have to do with the bizarre killing. The problem is that the plantation is notorious for being haunted, and Franki is less than enthusiastic about the prospect of meeting a ghost. Adding to her stress, her Sicilian grandma is up to her usual meddling antics—this time planning Franki’s engagement to Bradley before he’s even considered popping the question. As Bradley grows distant and plantation employees begin dropping like Southern belles during a sweltering summer, Franki turns to a psychic with a phobia of ghosts to solve the mysterious murders and her own relationship fears.

BLOG TOUR: NUN TOO SOON by Alice Loweecey

Synopsis:
Giulia Falcone-Driscoll has just taken on her first impossible client: The Silk Tie Killer. He’s hired Driscoll Investigations to prove his innocence and they have only thirteen days to accomplish it. Talk about being tried in the media. Everyone in town is sure Roger Fitch strangled his girlfriend with one of his silk neckties. And then there’s the local TMZ wannabes—The Scoop—stalking Giulia and her client for sleazy sound bites.

On top of all that, her assistant’s first baby is due any second, her scary smart admin still doesn’t relate well to humans, and her police detective husband insists her client is guilty. About this marriage thing—it’s unknown territory, but it sure beats ten years of living with 150 nuns.

Giulia’s ownership of Driscoll Investigations hasn’t changed her passion for justice from her convent years. But the more dirt she digs up, the more she’s worried her efforts will help a murderer escape. As the client accuses DI of dragging its heels on purpose, Giulia thinks The Silk Tie Killer might be choosing one of his ties for her own neck.

My Review: Giulia has personality and a sense of justice that seems to bend to meet her needs and makes her life - at home and at DI - interesting. She takes the Silk Tie Killer Case but isn't too sure the accused isn't guilty. As she delves into the case, she begins to wonder a bit about his charismatic attorney as well. Her great memory serves her well as does her ability to keep silent from her convent days. But can she establish who the killer or killers are in time to save her own neck? Her husband, Frank, is back on the police force and this case is his too, so his viewpoint (and concerns) are shared in Giulia's personal life. Well written, with unique characters, more than a touch of humor, and suspense, NUN TOO SOON is a great read. I may have to back up and read the other books by Loweecey now that I have a taste of Giulia.

About the Author:Baker of brownies and tormenter of characters, Alice Loweecey recently celebrated her thirtieth year outside the convent. She grew up watching Hammer Horror and Scooby-Doo Mysteries, which might explain a whole lot. When she’s not creating trouble for Giulia Falcone-Driscoll, she can be found growing her own vegetables (in summer) and cooking with them (the rest of the year).

BLOG TOUR: BIG MOJO : An Austin Carr Mystery by Jack Getze

Synopsis:
Wall Street’s miasmal garbage washes up on the Jersey Shore when a small time broker falls in love: Is he attracted to the beautiful lady — or her brother’s inside information? Held spellbound by a steamy, auburn-haired woman with a questionable past and a get-rich-quick, insider trading scheme, Austin Carr knocks down a beehive of bad-acting Bonacellis, including the ill-tempered Mr. Vic Bonacelli, who wants his redhead back, and local mob lieutenant Mama Bones Bonacelli, architect of a strange and excruciating death trap for the fast-talking stockbroker she calls smarty pants. To survive, Austin must unravel threads of jealousy, revenge and new affections, discovering the fate of a pseudo ruby called the Big Mojo, and close the lid on a pending United States of America vs. Austin Carr insider trading case. Can Austin and his Jersey Shore mouthpiece possibly out maneuver the savvy U.S. District Attorney from Manhattan? Does anything matter for Austin again if Mama Bones flips that switch?

Review:Austin Carr is back and his investment business is still fraught with with woe, mostly at the hands of Vic and Rags.  Vic wants Austin dead, but Mama Bones is sure one of her magic potions will do the trick. Add in Partricia Willis, whether dressed to kill or punked out, and the excitement builds. Austin wants to play it straight, but the boys from Vegas are involved along with the Big Mojo (is it real or fake?). To complicate things, his teenage daughter Beth is, well, being a teenager and rebelling.  Somehow Austin has to avoid being killed or going to prison for insider trading while he protects Beth, who seems to have inherited his screwball tendencies. As with the previous books in the series, Getze has done it again and created a thoroughly enjoyable entertaining read.  Yes, BIG MOJO can be read as a stand alone, but why deprive yourself of the previous two?
About Jack Getze:Former Los Angeles Times reporter Jack Getze is Fiction Editor for Anthony nominated Spinetingler Magazine, one of the internet’s oldest websites for noir, crime, and horror short stories. Through the Los Angeles Times/Washington Post News Syndicate, his news and feature stories were published in over five-hundred newspapers and periodicals worldwide. His two screwball mysteries, BIG NUMBERS and BIG MONEY, are being reissued by DOWN & OUT BOOKS, with the new BIG MOJO. His short stories have appeared in A Twist of Noir and Beat to a Pulp. Getze is an Active Member of Mystery Writers of America’s New York Chapter.

BLOG TOUR: A KILLER RETREAT by

About Tracy Weber
Tracy Weber is the author of the award-winning Downward Dog Mysteries series featuring yoga teacher Kate and her feisty German shepherd, Bella. Tracy loves sharing her passion for yoga and animals in any form possible. The second book in her series, A KILLER RETREAT, is now available and published by Midnight Ink.

Tracy and her husband live in Seattle with their challenging yet amazing German shepherd Tasha. When she’s not writing, Tracy spends her time teaching yoga, walking Tasha, and sipping Blackthorn cider at her favorite ale house.

I'm honored to have Tracy here with me today.  Let's get to know her a little better!

How long have you been writing?

I started writing my yoga blog in 2011, but my first foray into fiction was two-and-a-half years ago when I started writing my first novel, Murder Strikes a Pose. A Killer Retreat is my second novel. I’m still pleasantly amazed at how lucky I’ve been to get my first two books published.

What inspires you to write?

The joys and adventures of my life, real and imagined. My work is fictional, but it is often inspired by crazy situations my dog, Tasha, has gotten me into. And I have a great time watching strangers and making up stories about their worlds. If I can weave a yoga lesson or two into the work, all the better.

But that’s not all. My friends, family, and yoga students support me in my writing and encourage me when I’m feeling unworthy. Readers contact me to tell me they appreciate my work, and that gives me great confidence and joy. If it weren’t for all of their support, I’m not sure I could continue.

How long did it take you to write A Killer Retreat?

I feel like I’m a notoriously slow writer, though on a book-a-year contract, I guess I can’t be that slow. First drafts seem to take me forever. The first draft of A Killer Retreat took about five months, though I certainly wasn’t writing consistently during that entire time period. The next ten or so drafts took an additional six months. Fortunately, my editor didn’t ask for any rewrites after it was submitted, so I was able to then move on to my third book, tentatively titled Karma Can Be Killer.

What was your favorite scene to write?

I have to pick just one?

A Killer Retreat takes place on Orcas Island, which is one of my favorite places in the world. Creating fictional Orcas required me to mentally immerse all of my senses—sight, sound, smell, taste, touch—in my favorite places. It was like going on vacation without leaving my home. So although I loved writing most of the scenes, the ones where Kate fully experiences Orcas Island and the fictional Elysian Springs Resort Center are my favorites.

Who designed the book cover?

Isn’t the cover cute? I’m really lucky in that my publisher, Midnight Ink, hired the same artist to design my book covers that designed the banner on my website, http://tracyweberauthor.com/ . She’s a very talented artist, and I love to support her work. Her name is Nicole Alesi and you can check out more of her work at this website. http://www.nicolealesi.com/
This is the second in the series. Is easier to write the second one or harder?

A little of both, actually. My first book had been percolating inside me for a couple of years, so the plot came out pretty easily and I wrote the first draft in three weeks. In this book, I already knew the characters, but I still had to create a new fictional world since they were traveling to a new location. The plot was a little bit more complicated as well, so I had to do more research on the specifics of the murder. The easy part was mental. I had already written one book, therefore I knew I had the capability two write a second.

Is there a third coming out in the next year?

Yes, book three in the series, which is tentatively titled Karma can be Killer, has already been written. It will be released January 8th, 2016. In this book, Kate, Bella and their friends will be back in Seattle. In addition to some important new human characters, the story includes a number of unique animal characters, including goats, a crow, a pigeon, and two barred owls. It’s a lot of fun!

Kate Davidson is a vegan yoga teacher and dog lover. How similar are you to Kate?

Kate and I share passions (yoga, animals, and our German shepherds), and we have similar body types and body image issues. We are both headstrong and can be a tiny bit opinionated. But we have completely different neuroses. Kate suffers from pogonophobia (the irrational fear of beards), commitment phobia, and anger management issues. Her out-of-control temper often makes her do things that she later regrets.

I, on the other hand, have no problem with beards, and I rarely lose my temper. I’ve been happily married for over 17 years, and I have never had problem committing to anything. Which doesn’t mean that I’m not neurotic. I suffer from occasional anxiety, I’m overly attached to my dog, and I have moderate, shall we say, control issues.

Both Kate and I have many faults, but we continue to learn, grow, and we try to leave a positive mark on the world. What’s more important than that?

What are your favorite things to do besides writing?

I’m sort of a homebody these days. I love hanging out with my dog and hubby, curled up with a good glass of wine and watching a movie. I also enjoy going on long walks with Tasha-dog, especially if said walks involve sunshine and a beach. And no week would be complete without having dinner and a hard cider at my favorite ale house. That all sounds pretty blasé, though. Maybe I’ll have to take up skydiving.

Who is your favorite author and why?

I love lots and lots and lots of authors that I love, but my favorite has to be Susan Conant. Not only have I devoured every single one of her books, but it was her work that inspired me to become a writer myself. If you haven’t read one of her Dog Lover’s Mysteries yet, you’re missing out.

Anything else my readers might want to know about you?

I love hearing from readers! You can friend me on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/tracywe or e-mail me at Tracy@WholeLifeYoga.com. You can also sign up to receive my author newsletter. Nothing makes me happier than hearing from someone who has read and appreciated my work.

Synopsis
Yogi Kate must clear her name of murder in this charming yoga mystery

When Kate Davidson gets an offer to teach yoga classes to wedding guests at the Elysian Springs resort, she jumps at the opportunity, even though it means being forced to endure the wedding ceremony of the center’s two caretakers.

Avoiding the M-word turns out to be the least of Kate’s problems when a wedding guest is found floating face-down in the resort’s hot tub, shortly after a loud, public (and somewhat embarrassing) fight with Kate. The police pick Kate as their number-one suspect, so she’s forced to team up with boyfriend Michael, best friend Rene, and German shepherd sidekick Bella to find the real killer. But they’ll have to solve the murder before the police arrest Kate, or her next gig may last a lifetime–behind bars.

NEW RELEASE! THINK MURDER by Cassidy Salem

Synopsis (from Amazon)

Discovering the body of a friend and colleague was not what Adina Donati had in mind when she moved to Washington D.C. in search of excitement. An administrative assistant at a prestigious think tank, Adina is drawn into the middle of the murder investigation. The police don’t seem to be making much progress until Adina stumbles onto important clues and discovers just how dangerous life in the nation’s capitol can be.

"I could not stop reading and was disappointed that I had finished it; I wanted more. Salem captured what I call a classic detective/mystery case and I place this up there with other novels written by Agatha Christie, Henry Christopher Bailey, and Patricia Cornwell."

"This story was positively captivating. I couldn't put it down. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time."
Review
For a first mystery novel, Salem is off to a great start! Set in Washington DC at a think tank, the first things that come to mind are political scandal or theft of intellectual property, but this is much more subtle. Adina's friend, Hilary, is a research assistant working on a project when she is murdered. She's also an avid amateur photographer.  Adina is assigned to finish the project and deals with a cantankerous boss on the project. There are some questions about the project, a contact who seems a bit odd not to mention the new guy at the animal shelter. . . Are they all connected to the murder? the project? or just coincidence?  Did she snap a picture of the wrong person?
Salem has a well-developed plot. It's well-written, with enough tension to keep the pages turning. Adina is a strong, intelligent woman that has depth and doubts that make her human. Besides she loves dogs. There's a hint of possible romance that is left hanging at the end. I only hope there is a sequel. It will definitely be added to the TBR pile (near the top!).
About the Author
Cassidy Salem has always been an avid reader. She is especially fond of mysteries and historical fiction. When she's not reading, she enjoys music and spending time with family and friends, and travels with her husband and son whenever possible.
