Finishing up Book II
I'm putting the finishing touches on the manuscript for the sequel/companion novel to SWEET UNREST (title to come!).
Book II will pick up where SWEET UNREST left off, but it will be told from another character's POV :O)

New Book Deal
So about a week ago I got to announce this:
Sara Sargent has also acquired, in a pre-empt, Heartless Things and an untitled YA novel by Lisa Maxwell. In the story, Gwen and her best friend are abducted to a dark world akin to Pan's Labyrinth called Neverland, but it's nothing like the fairy tale. To rescue her friend, Gwen must decide whether to trust a roguish young pirate or the boy who calls himself Pan. Publication is scheduled for spring 2016; Kathleen Rushall at Marsal Lyon Literary Agency did the two-book deal for world rights.
Excited doesn't even begin to tell you how I feel about this particular deal.
I started writing this book in 2011 for NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). I wanted to write a romance about a young pirate, but I didn't want to write a historical, so I got to thinking... and then I got to reading... and then I discovered J.M. Barrie's original Peter and Wendy. And let me tell you... that is some dark writing there.
Which got me to thinking some more... and little by little, I wrote this strange, dark book about a wounded, brooding pirate boy, the danger of believing in stories, war, sanity, and sacrifice. I didn't want to write a re-telling, and that's not really what this is. In the book, the characters use Barrie's story for their own purposes...and some of those are downright chilling.
I revised it for about two years. It turned into a very different book than the romantic pirate romp I thought I was writing, and I loved it all the more for it. I finally found an agent who believed in the story as much as I did, and who--amazingly enough--found an editor who loved it as well. And now, in spring of 2016, you'll all get to fall in love with these characters like I did.

Any time I find an image that reminds me of the Neverland in my head, I put it up there. And be sure to check back for more updates!

Happy New Year!
2014 is here, and it's a year I didn't really think would ever come... It's the year I will have a book-shaped thing with my name on it sitting on a shelf somewhere. It's the year I go from being a writer to an author.
Someone smarter than me once said begin as you mean to go on, so I'm starting this year by officially making this blog a thing. I'll be updating it fairly regularly with guest posts, interviews, and news about SWEET UNREST. I might even do some....
