Why do I Torment Myself with Sappy Movies in December?

Why do I Torment Myself with Sappy Movies in December?

These movies make no sense. The internal logic falls apart almost immediately, or at least within the first quarter hour. There are wizardly Santas, wish-granting entities or objects, time-travel, alternate realities, magic spells and “coincidences” galore in these movies. I don’t only have to “suspend my disbelief”: I have to turn off my brain almost entirely.
The characters are two-dimensional, predictable and ridiculously simplistic. No one can possibly be that shallow, that stupid, that naive, that obvious. Yet, there they are, in film after film, on USA, TNT, TBS, Hallmark, AMC and other movie channels and network television stations.

romantic movies ruin relationships

image from http://memegenerator.net

These plots and characters are idiotic. The stories are anti-feminist or anti-intelligence or both. The messages, especially for women, include such tropes as: “Don’t have an interesting career or meet anyone ‘new’: go ‘home’ and be with someone from high school so that you can live within your family’s sphere because that’s the only way to ‘be happy.'” For those with successful careers or high-powered jobs, the messages are: “Being a successful person can’t possibly make you ‘happy’; only ‘love’ can do that.”

Repeated favorites are also the usual “beginning” in which they have the “meet-cute between some ‘ordinary’ person and someone ‘royal/wealthy.'” Next, we “hear” these messages: “Despite your complete unsuitability, s/he will want to be with you. Even if you’re a hotel maid or other ‘peon’ with nothing in common regarding backgrounds or experiences, don’t worry: you’ll live ‘happily ever after.’ So, everyone should aspire/expect to be swept up by someone rich and powerful at any moment. Never mind if that person is your employer, your subject, your client/patient or your nemesis: ‘it’s all good.'”

The endings and beginnings are unsatisfying and incomplete: inevitably, these movies end with the main characters’ having their first (and sometimes only) kiss, or their wedding ceremony, or their engagement/proposal and response, or some other “beginning.” However, this event occurs after about 90 minutes’ worth of false starts, wrong turns, disrespect and/or disregard. How could they trust each other (or themselves, for that matter) after one or both of them has ignored the signs and/or the other person, misread them or misunderstood them for their entire relationship up to that point?
These characters lie and cheat their way to “happiness.” Often, one or both has been about to begin with /marry someone else entirely. Then, at almost the last minute, one or both of the main characters changes his/her mind and breaks that relationship off in order to be with the other main character instead. There is also usually no honesty from the deceiver regarding how long s/he has harbored feelings for the other protagonist, either. Yet, somehow, all lying and liars (if they are the protagonists, that is) are forgiven.

hallmark-christmas movies

image from http://smilingldsgirl.com

The protagonists hurt others. Let’s talk about the person whose heart s/he just broke by calling off the engagement/wedding, ending the ongoing relationship. Usually, the filmmakers/writers make that person seem “deserving” of being rejected by showing him/her to be unreliable, like being a cheater or a liar, or being secretly (not-so-secretly) a jerk or insincere, just in it for the money or status, for example. But what about when that person is actually great, but has the misfortune to be suddenly “wrong” for the protagonist? We don’t see how the rejected ones cope with the ending of their dreams, do we?
The romantic couple starts with a shaky foundation. How can there be any trust in the person who just betrayed their beloved? How can the new love, the family, the friends, support this change of heart so readily?
How can these people trust their own judgment? One or both of them was about to be committed to one person, then, after very little stimulation or information, they make a decision to end that and commit to someone else, all in a very short span of time while relying on very little “real-life” experience of being involved with the new person. Of course, this new “love interest” or “best friend-turned-lover” is conventionally beautiful/handsome. That doesn’t hurt, eh?
Then, there is the issue of questionable compatibility. Seriously: these two main characters have not spent much time together, never been intimate or even kissed, and suddenly, they decide they are perfect for each other and decide to get married? Unless they are acknowledging that many marriages head into divorce quite quickly, how can anyone be glad that these two people are starting a long-term commitment without sufficient information and experience about each other?
How do they live with the way they started? I try to imagine the moments after that kiss, or on the honeymoon, or about a month or so into their new relationship. Wouldn’t one or both of them ask: “Honey? How is it that you love me/want me now, but you didn’t for x number of weeks/months/years? What exactly was your problem then and how do I know you won’t develop that problem again?” or something like that.

romance movie pack

image from http://www.amazon.com

Why do I do this to myself? Why do I watch so many of these movies each year? It’s as if I’ve been ensorceled, doomed to watch helplessly while believing uselessly in these “happy endings,” time after time, even though I know how false they are.

I admit it: I get weepy when they “find” each other. I still enjoy the seemingly “happy ending.”

Maybe I’m always hoping for a “happy ending” to a romantic story of my own.

Wish me good luck with that.

A Jewish Buddhist at Christmas/ Chanukah/ Solstice Time

A re-posting from 2013, with some minor changes:

Christmas and I are not friends. We are not even good neighbors. I was raised Jewish in a predominantly Jewish neighborhood, school system, and childhood. I was an insider in an outsider world every December.

Despite our over 75% Jewish population in our local public schools, the relentless Christian-ness of the USA permeated. Most of our teachers and all of the school administrators were not Jewish. Therefore, we Jewish students were forced to learn and sing Christmas carols alongside our Christian classmates every year in music classes and choirs in our classes and assemblies. I mouthed but would not sing songs with lyrics like “Jesus, our God,” or “Christ, our King.” I refused to “celebrate,” but I would go along as required. I hated it.

All of my childhood and most of my young adult life, I hated Christmas. I hated the trees, the lights, the candy canes, the incessant carols on muzak almost everywhere we went. I hated the silly fashion and accessory affectations (reindeer hats, Santa sweaters, elves in snowglobes on chains, fake snow on windowsills) and the massively wasteful appropriation of space and time every December.

I-Hate-Christmas-272x480

Christian adults would say ridiculous, ignorant things to me and other non-Christians, like: “Christmas isn’t religious; it’s American.” And, “It’s not a Christmas tree. It’s a holiday tree.” Or, my personal favorite, “You can celebrate Christmas and still be Jewish. I know lots of people who do!”

For a kid who feels oppressed by the pervasive and invasive Christmassification of everything for almost two months every year, it’s difficult to separate hating the holiday-ness from despising the people who rightfully celebrate it. I often did not succeed in making that distinction. I breathed a sigh of relief every December 26. Over. Yeah.

I celebrated the Solstice for a few years. We were tentatively friends, paganism and I. I even created a Solstice “advent” calendar with 13 “rays” of the sun, to be unfolded, one each of the thirteen days prior to December 21, each “ray” a quality or positivity we wanted to affirm or invite into our lives. That was fun and interesting, but ultimately not “mine,” either. I liked the symbols and intention, but Solstice and I did not remain close, either.

Winter Solstice

For about twenty years, I hostessed Chanukah parties for my mostly Christian friends and half-Jewish son (not Jewish at all, except by birth) and his Christian/Sufi father and then my Jewish/Mormon/Buddhist female partner because I like to make and eat Chanukah food and give presents. I created and shared an English lyric about visualizing miracles to be sung when lighting the Chanukah candles since the Jewish religious parts of the holiday and I parted ways when I was about ten years old. I tried to make Chanukah mine. It only kind of worked, and only for a while (mostly when my son lived with me). Chanukah and I gradually broke up.

latkes

Partly, this occurred because I became a Buddhist. That made “the holiday season” even more irrelevant. I not only do not celebrate Christmas, but don’t do much with Chanukah or Solstice any longer, either.

Each fall, I buy some gifts for friends and family members (honoring whatever they celebrate) when I can afford it, and wish people well for whatever they celebrate. But, I also try to keep to myself on the actual days of these holidays, since they’re not “mine.” I really do not celebrate or believe in them.

I do not miss these holidays. I do not feel left out. I do not feel angry. I do not feel deprived, alone, or otherwise sad or depressed. These just aren’t my holidays. I view them with slight amusement and a keen detachment over the last fifteen years, as if I were visiting from another culture (which I kind of am).

This year it is a little easier to escape both holidays because Chanukah and Christmas are not coinciding on anyone’s calendar. I can and do discretely and discreetly avoid them. It is easy to ignore the Solstice because I don’t feel a rhythm with the seasons much (today in St. Louis, Missouri —midwest, and usually very cold in December—, USA, it is one day past having 60-degrees and thunderstorms with no cold weather in sight, either. Thanks, Al Gore!).

I’ve gone through despising, hating, avoiding, celebrating, enjoying, participating, encouraging, hostessing, attending, bowing out to relinquishing December holidays over the four + decades of my adult life. I’m quite happy, now, taking the parts I like (mostly some good food and a few songs, gift-giving and receiving, days off) and ignoring the rest.

Buddhist December

I hope no one feels disrespected or patronized just because I don’t participate in or celebrate any holidays in the fall “holiday season” any longer.

Enjoy your holiday(s). Really. Just don’t impose them on me.

Stop Using #Antibiotics Unnecessarily: You’re killing us all!

Stop Using #Antibiotics Unnecessarily: You’re killing us all!

Antibiotics-2-1

image from http://www.wellbeingart.com

Articles about the dangers of the overuse of antibiotics (in pills/oral, suppository, topical/ointment, hand soap and sanitizer forms) are becoming as prevalent as the bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics:

A) “‘Dangerously high’ antibiotic resistance levels worldwide: WHO [World Health Organization]” http://news.yahoo.com/dangerously-high-antibiotic-resistance-levels-worldwide-112717705.html

November 16, 2015

“Antibiotic resistance, which can turn common ailments into killers, has reached dangerous levels globally.”

More than 90% of ear infections are viral. Stop giving/taking antibiotics for them. They don’t help and they harm.

All colds and ‘flus are viral. Same thing.

B) “The Dangerous Side Of The Antibiotics That No One Will Tell You”

http://www.explorehealthyfood.com/the-dangerous-side-of-the-antibiotics-that-no-one-will-tell-you/

October 24, 2015

“Bacteria increasingly become immune to the drugs designed to kill them. Some antibiotics simply don’t work any longer, and some will stop functioning soon….The more often we use it, the more we enable mutating of the bacteria that multiply.”

MRSA is on the rise. It eats your skin, muscles, bones. Need to know more?

C) “Antibiotics fed to wholesome livestock dangerous to youngsters”

http://www.salemstandard.com/antibiotics-fed-to-healthy-livestock-harmful-to-children/12742/

November 16, 2015

“…[U]sing the drugs in healthy animals meant for food has reduced their ability to treat infections in humans — posing a potentially serious health crisis….Most of the use involves the addition of low doses of antimicrobial agents to the feed of healthy animals over prolonged periods to promote growth and increase feed efficiency or at a range of doses to prevent disease….These nontherapeutic uses contribute to resistance and create new health dangers for humans….Children under 5 are especially at risk for such infections because of their immature immune systems…”

More reasons to stop eating meat, chicken, pork, any other animals, if you can, or stop eating those who are fed antibiotics during their lives and stop feeding them to your family.

D) “9 reasons to avoid antibiotics for life”

http://www.naturalhealth365.com/side-effects-of-antibiotics-1620.html

October 29, 2015

[Read article for full explanations of each of these reason]

“1. Antibiotics treat symptoms, not causes.”

“2. Antibiotic use has been linked to cancer.”

“3. Deadly allergic reactions.”

“4. Development of antibiotic-resistant ‘super bugs.’”

“5. Overpopulation of candida albicans [yeast, ringworm, jock itch].”

“6. Chronic fatigue syndrome.”

“7. Disruption of intestinal bacteria.”

“8. Weakening of the immune system.”

“9. Nutrient loss and mineral deficiency.”

E) “ALMOST HALF OF ALL ANTIBIOTIC USE IS UNNECESSARY”

http://fqresearch.org/are-antibiotics-necessary

November 15, 2015

“…[A]ntibiotic use is supposed to be reserved for confirmed bacterial infections, [so] the only infections that antibiotics work for, any prescribing of antibiotics outside of a confirmed bacterial infection, is considered inappropriate.”

And, while we’re on the subject, STOP USING HAND-SANITIZERS!

F) “5 Reasons Why You Should Stop Using Hand Sanitizers!”

http://kupdates.com/health-wellness/5-reasons-stop-using-hand-sanitizers/

November 16, 2015

[Read article for full explanations of each of these reason]

“1. It Adversely Affects Your Skin”

“2. It Can Lead To The Development Of ‘Superbugs'”

“3. It Contains Unknown [to most people] And Possibly Dangerous Chemicals”

“4. It Can Increase Your Skin’s Absorption Of BPA [very dangerous chemical found in plastics, receipts, tickets, more]”

“5. It Isn’t Even That Effective”

G) “New “Superbug” Gene Found in Animals and People in China”

http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/new-superbug-gene-found-in-animals-and-people-in-china/

November 19, 2015

“A new gene that makes bacteria highly resistant to a last-resort class of antibiotics has been found in people and pigs in China — including in samples of bacteria with epidemic potential, researchers said on Wednesday….

“‘One of the few solutions to uncoupling these connections is limitation or cessation of colistin use in agriculture….Failure to do so will create a public health problem of major dimensions.'”

Don’t be frightened and passive: CHANGE YOUR WAYS!

What to do instead of using antibiotics? Prevention and Home Remedies!

H) “We’ve been fighting morning breath all wrong”

http://www.sciencealert.com/we-ve-been-fighting-morning-breath-all-wrong

November 18, 2015

“…Streptococcous salivarius K12…[could be] the bacteria strain [that] could soon be put into a lozenge or spray and used as a probiotic, or beneficial mix of bacteria, to knock out the bad bacteria that causes bad breath….[A]ntibacterial solutions like mouthwash and hand sanitiser are being overused to the point where they could be doing more harm than good.”

I) “New Study Shows Ginger is 10.000x Stronger Than Chemo (and only kills cancer cells)”

http://www.healthnutnews.com/new-study-shows-ginger-is-10000x-stronger-than-chemo-and-only-kills-cancer-cells/

November 2, 2015

“…[G]inger has been found to be more effective than many cancer drugs at treating cancer, including chemotherapy. There is mounting evidence of some cancer drugs being ineffective and actually accelerating the death of cancer patients.”

1) Strengthen your immune system with natural additions and supplements: Add/increase turmeric, garlic, oregano oil, echinacea, ginger, Vitamin C; eat a balanced diet; consume less sugar, caffeine and alcohol.

2) Gargle with salt water or hydrogen peroxide (diluted) whenever you notice/feel a cold or ‘flu symptom or have been exposed to a virus or bacterial source.

3) Wash your hands for longer (sing “Happy Birthday” slowly twice while washing) AND with hot water and non-antimicrobial/antibacterial soap), every time you touch public spaces/objects, and more frequently.

4) If you are particularly sensitive/at risk, wear a face mask and thin gloves when in public or around people.

5) Drink more fresh water (up to 8 cups [64 oz or about 2 litres]) per day.

6) Sleep longer and better (don’t use electronic devices before going to sleep; turn off all electric devices near bed; don’t watch TV to fall asleep).

7) Exercise at least 3 times/week for 45 minutes each.

8) Meditate daily, at least 15 minutes.

9) Start/continue doing yoga.

10) Play music more often.

11) Sing, laugh, breathe deeply many times per day.

12) Smile more.

IF you are actually infected with a BACTERIA (not a virus!!!), check with your doctor for the least-invasive, least-intensive way to eliminate it (fewest number of days for lowest dose of antiobiotic medication) AND take acidophilus or other pro-biotics while taking a course of ANY antibiotic to maintain/restore the “good” bacteria in your digestive tracts.

Smorgasbord - Variety is the spice of life

This broadcast is coming to you from Ireland.. I got all excited on the first day when the sun came out and I had hoped that this might be a good sign… Unfortunately it has rather gone downhill since then weather wise but more than made up for by the warm welcome and the Christmas spirit everywhere you turn.

I have scheduled a few things for the next week and will be popping in and out to check on the blogs that I follow. But, I do wish everyone the most fantastic Christmas and may 2016 be healthy, loving and jammed pack with friendship.

Here is a quick look at the last week here on Smorgasbord beginning with an apology to Ryanair for my complaints of the past… they have redeemed themselves.

PLEASE pretty PLEASE leave reviews every time you read a book! It really can be this simple and you help each author whose book you review, especially those with few reviews, no large publisher behind us, and a need for honest readers’ comments!
