It is with great sadness and anger that I have heard about (and read a few of) the disgusting responses on social media to the bringing forward of reports of the sexual predation prevalent in Hollywood, politics, academia: EVERYWHERE. These remarks have been cruelly and ignorantly denigrating and re-traumatizing sexual assault survivors.

Give them nothing to respond to except a number, I say. Then, where is the argument?
#justyournumber (mine is a countable 46, but decidedly higher) allows survivors to report our sexual assaults, molestations, public exposures, sexual coercions, rapes, and any other kinds of private or public sexual threats, to be counted. No arguing.
Then, I thought, what about locations or one or two salient facts? Let’s provide those lucky enough to have no or low numbers or anyone else who is interested with some context. We need more people to begin to grasp the breadth of the problem.
By the way, when you read my or anyone’s list, imagine trying to “report” these incidents: to whom? with what results?

—30+ assaults by “family friends,” teachers and family members, starting at age 5, including a step-uncle who was a teacher. This man assaulted me (at age 10) in his classroom after school while my grandmother and his father (her second husband) were talking in the hallway outside the classroom. Our 6th-grade teacher, Ken Weber (long dead), at Central School in Olivette, Missouri, molested almost every girl in my class whose breasts had begun to develop by “dropping” paper clips, chalk or pencils down the fronts of our blouses and retrieving them with his own hand. As a freshman at the University of Wisconsin/Madison, all the female students were required to strip down to our underwear and pose for “posture pictures” during our Physical Education “exam.” I later found out that these questionably obtained “soft porn” shots were circulated, sold and posted in multiple locations for many decades;
—3 assaults on a bus (2 public exposures and 1 molestation), all while in my pre-teen/teen years. One very large young adult who was one of my “campers” had Down’s Syndrome. When he molested me by trapping me in the aisle of the bus (he was 6′ tall and about 225 pounds to my 5’1″ and 120 pounds) and mashing his hands all over my breasts, the older counselor told me “he couldn’t help it” and not to yell at him, but just to “push him away and go sit down.” This was in 1972 in St. Louis, Missouri;
—2 assaults/maulings while walking in daylight in public spaces on a college campus. One was a teen on a bicycle who grabbed my breast, squeezed hard, laughed and rode away; I was in my 30s. I DID go to the “campus police” who practically laughed and didn’t even write down my report. This was at Yale University in the 1980s (I was there attending a professional conference).
—3 molestations/assaults by employers/supervisors, starting in college and continuing through my young adult years. While working in Food Service in the dorms’ cafeteria as part of my Work-Study financial aid program at the University of Wisconsin/Madison in 1972, a supervisor trapped me in the storage area, assaulted and tried to rape me. I managed to kick him in the groin and get away. I never went back to that job and had to find another one;
—3 sexual coercions involving drugs in private homes at parties, by high school peers;
—5 sexual assaults by “dates” (whom I did not date again) who grabbed/fingered me without asking before I even knew they were going to do that, starting in my early twenties and spanning into my late 50s, in cars, private homes, an outdoor party, a beach.
There were also uncountable male psychopaths, strangers who felt entitled to engage in assaults on my body via random ass-grabbing, “accidental brush-bys” and other groping and sexual attacks, including making kissing or sucking sounds, while I rode on public transportation vehicles or stood in waiting areas and hallways in various USA cities, throughout my teen and young adult years.
Some jerks repeatedly yell out horrible, horrendous street harassment comments, known unaffectionately as “cat-calls,” most accompanied by graphic gestures, pseudo-sexual sound-effects along with vulgar and completely offensive language whenever any female happens to be in sight of them by being on a sidewalk or an urban construction site’s walkway. These are also too numerous to track, occurring throughout my life until quite recently (I am now 63).

2017 #MacArthur Fellows: 24 Creative, Genius, Unique Leaders Who Inspire

Let’s celebrate extraordinary and amazing and beneficial and FUN people! I first heard about these annual awards when they were only about $200,000 and they were called “Genius Grants.” The stipend for the MacArthur Fellowship is currently set at $625,000, paid in quarterly installments over five years.
The cool thing about this award is that the group of people who nominate and select these individuals every year are ANONYMOUS and it is apparently impossible to discover their identities. This protects the process from corruption, one would hope.
Their FAQs page states: “All of the participants in the selection process—–nominators, evaluators, and selectors—–serve anonymously, and we keep their communications confidential. Anonymity protects them from being inundated with unsolicited requests. In addition, our experience shows that people readily provide frank impressions if they have an assurance that their responses will not be disseminated beyond the program staff and Selection Committee.”
I’ve heard that each recipient gets a phone call “out of the blue,” since they don’t even know they’re being considered, to announce that they are selected and about to receive one of our highest honors and a huge cash award.
The idea behind these awards is that the Fellows can then “quit their day jobs” or work less for money while living on the investments/cash they get/accumulate from this award. That award liberates Fellows to pursue their genius ideas even further! YEA!
There are three criteria for selection of Fellows:
—Exceptional creativity
—Promise for important future advances based on a track record of significant accomplishments
—Potential for the Fellowship to facilitate subsequent creative work.
Again, from the FAQs: “The MacArthur Fellowship is designed to provide seed money for intellectual, social, and artistic endeavors. We believe that highly motivated, self-directed, and talented people are in the best position to decide how to allocate their time and resources. By adopting a ‘no strings attached’ policy, we provide the maximum freedom for the recipients to follow their creative vision, whether it is moving forward with their current activities, expanding the scope of their work, or embarking upon an entirely new endeavor. There are no restrictions on how the money can be spent, and we impose no reporting obligations.”
I also love that they make a concerted effort and usually succeed in finding obscure, diverse, interesting and helpful people to whom to give this important award each year. Check out the 2017 cohort!
Anybody a fan of the CMT TV series, Nashville, as I have been? One of the recurring roles has been being played in 2015-2017 by one of this year’s recipients, Rhiannon Giddens, a gifted “Singer, Instrumentalist, and Songwriter,” who won for: “Reclaiming African American contributions to folk and country music and bringing to light new connections between music from the past and the present.”
Sometimes, though, they do not pick the “thought-leader” in a particular area, but one who is using others’ work in new ways or places. I wish they’d give credit to the originators of this recipient’s work: Betsy Levy Paluck uses the thinking and program components of Community Matters‘ Safe School Ambassadors program’s creators, Rick Phillips, John Linney and Chris Pack. I know this because I worked for/with them and helped write the book they created about their anti-bullying work over 10 years ago. Oh, well. Can’t win them all!
Spread the word! Read about these people and their projects to youth and adults to inspire us all to be better! There is no upper age limit on recipients, either!
This year’s recipients include artists/designers, social scientists/humanities scholars, physical scientists/mathematicians, writers, community leaders/ strategists/ activists, and more.
There are, as usual (2016 was an exception), fewer female (9) than male (15) recipients. Most are under 50 years old, but a few are older.

5 Crucial Tips to Consider When Writing Erotica

So you’d like to try your hand at writing erotica? Maybe you’re a seasoned author with publications in other genres or perhaps this is your very first attempt at fiction. Either way, there are many things to contemplate and research. However, for the sake of simplicity, let’s begin with five crucial tips to consider when writing erotica.
Pen Names: Yes or No?
Using a pseudonym, or pen name as it’s more commonly referred to, is often considered to be the hallmark of erotica authors. With one’s anonymity guaranteed, we are free to express ourselves in the most taboo of formats without any fear of repercussions in our everyday lives.
This is true; however, using a pen name can make for a slower start to our careers! Without the ability to be authentic, without being able to use our “warm” market, and with readers’ unable to put a face to the name, we are essentially trying to create a following for an unknown product by an unknown and worse, a hidden supplier.
One must keep in mind the sensationalism that comes with being an erotica author. As long as you don’t mind having your personal life under a microscope and a little tittering behind your back at the local grocery store, you may find that using your real name garners more attention.
The adage “There’s no such thing as bad publicity” applies well here, because more attention will definitely lead to more sales. Erotica authors, therefore, need to weigh the pros and cons of the consequences of using or not using a pen name in direct reference to our personal lives and temperaments.
Remember: what is local has the potential to become national; and, if your books really take off [pun intended?], could become international. The sky’s the limit, if you are daring enough! Are you willing to be known for your erotica writing?
Writing in the 1st or 3rd person
What about choosing the right narrative perspective, usually known as “point of view,” or POV? Of course, fiction can be well-written in either 1st or 3rd person narrative form. In erotica, the goal is to connect the reader very intimately to the adventures and feelings of the characters.
when there are different points of view in your story, it can be one of the best times to write in the third person. Some authors switch the POV from character to character as each chapter progresses. This is a great way to engage many different types of readers, because they potentially have more than one main character to relate to.
However, writing in the first person allows for a more in-depth perspective and perhaps a stronger connection for the reader. In erotica, it is crucial for the reader to relate sexually to at least one character in your book. Either they see themselves as the heroine who wants to experience the hero as he is written, or they are the hero who is captivated by the heroine. Whatever the situation, in order to create a lasting and hopefully, raving fan, erotica must titillate both their emotional needs and sexual desires.
For these reasons, choosing the right point of view for your story is important. Whatever narrative form is chosen, the goal must always be to use the sexual tension between the characters and the consummation of these forces to drive the story forward.
Using the 5 Senses
Description is the hallmark of fiction and even more so in erotica. Trying to describe a scene that the reader can visualize themselves actually experiencing is the key. Using the five senses is paramount to ensuring that the reader has both mental and physical responses to your words. The reader must see the location as well as hear the dialogue and various sounds the characters make and hear themselves. The descriptions must be so detailed and pleasant to the ear that the reader’s brain can actually feel the touches of the characters.
Not every scene needs all five senses though. In fact, taking the time to focus on just one or two can sometimes enhance the experience. Just like in real life, if a particular sense is no longer working properly, the other four will intensify. Writing erotica works exactly the same way: when only one sense is the focus, or when one or more senses is shut off (think: blindfolds, handcuffs, etc.) the remaining senses become highly energized.
Smell, taste and physical sensations are probably the hardest to describe accurately, but they also elicit some of the greatest responses, because they can be triggers to real-life memories. A sweet vanilla scent, the decadent taste of chocolate-covered strawberries or the feel of cool satin sheets on naked skin all have the potential to trigger recognition in the reader. This recognition, however subtle, helps to take the reader from a removed place behind the pages of a book to becoming a living character within it.
The five senses can never be overused in erotica. The goal is to be able to see, hear, touch, smell and taste it all. Your reader should come away from the experience feeling as though they have truly lived these intimate moments.
Creativity in Intimacy [section needs a new title; see below]
If erotica is to be moved forward by the characters’ sexuality, then how does one continually write these scenes in a creative and non-repetitive way? Here’s where the element of surprise comes in. Keeping the readers on their toes about how, where and why it’s going to happen is the key.
In a novella, for example, one will usually find four to five intimate scenes. If the same process is simply repeated over and over each time, it will become stale and the reader will lose interest. Each scene needs to build with a different amount of passion and intensity while still being unique in the story.
Having varied levels of intimacy between characters also helps to create more depth and range in each tryst. Therefore, it can be helpful to decide on the background of each scene beforehand. Maybe the first time, it is the power of lust that brings the characters together. However, by the time the second scene comes around, they have fallen in love and the act is more sensual. The third scene might feature the hard anger of betrayal. The final one might be based in forgiveness and show a culmination of both their insatiable lust and ultimate love for one another.
Having a story arc such as this will ultimately change the details in each scene and make it more interesting for the reader. Also, using tried and true tropes, like “friends to lovers” or “forbidden lust” can help authors to follow a pattern such as the one mentioned and build each scene into an exclusive moment in the story, every time.
Realism vs. Fantasy
Erotica delves into a fantasy world where readers are looking to be swept up into endless magical moments. Although fans of erotica are looking for entertainment and escapism, mixing in a little reality helps to connect the reader better to your work. Combining the idea of lust-filled werewolves with the real-life emotional struggles of a relationship makes for a nice mixture of fantasy and reality. This can ground the readers and enable them to empathize with the characters you are describing. Once they are so connected, it then becomes easier for the readers to suspend disbelief and open up to intimacy between a mythological creature and a human.
So in other words, even though the heroine of your story has been kidnapped by a vampire whose seduction techniques may very well kill her, the story will be more authentic if there is a healthy dose of realism involved. The heroine and the vampire’s decision-making skills, their doubts, fears and even their desires can all make the story more realistic despite the context’s being fantastical. These small moments of realism can enable the readers, just like the heroine, ultimately to fall under the spell of the sexy vampire.
Even when the story does not contain paranormal elements, it is still in the realm of fantasy. Maybe the story describes a sexual fantasy that your reader has always dreamed about experiencing. Often, erotica can allow the readers to live out their fantasies in a safe environment far from the complications of real life. Unfortunately, this country runs on money. We all know insurance companies run this country. And, most people’s families have a lot of influence and responsibility for their members.
When gun violence becomes too expensive, insurance companies will move to change it quickly. When shooter’s embarrass and COST their families money, family members(parents, grandparents, spouses/partners, children) will move more quickly to prevent/shut those shooters down/report them BEFORE they go on rampages.
So: charge each criminal shooter’s FAMILY and any insurance companies he [99% of shooters are male] uses FOR ANY REASON (car, house, boat, life, disability: whatever) to pay for the health care, recovery, rehab, burial, therapy, income losses, personal injury debilitation, PTSD and other costs associated with being shot at/shot.

We all know that the NRA—National Rifle Association of America—and other gun association lobbyists have prevented the passage of reasonable gun safety laws. We must hold them ALL accountable NOW. For every dollar a lobbyist “donates,” s/he must provide the same amount to compensate victims and communities for gun violence. I promise: donations will disappear!
SO: charge the NRA members EACH 10% of ALL gun violence costs not covered, above, for example: for all site clean up, hospital, ER, ambulance, policing, EMT expenses and other community costs associated with dealing with gun violence OF ANY KIND (domestic, hijackings, criminals, shooters, gangs, robberies, terrorists: whatever).

Those who profit from any dangerous, harmful or otherwise socially destructive and/or unnecessary products have been made to pay for its consequences already via taxes in the USA (think: cigarettes, gasoline, luxury items like yachts, etc.). Why should gun and ammo profiteers be exempt?
So: charge each gun show operator, gun shop owner, or owners/operators or profiteers of ANYWHERE that sells guns and/or ammunition, onsite OR ONLINE (pawn shops, hardware stores, “sports” stores, “hunting” stores, etc.) a VIOLENCE #TAX on EACH item sold that could be used to harm people. I think a 20% tax of each sale would be a sufficient disincentive both to purchase and to sell. That money shall go to cover the costs accrued in #1, 2, and 4 of this list as well AND gun safety classes, gun violence prevention seminars and other educational programs REQUIRED for ALL GUN OWNERS and USERS to attend ANNUALLY (this includes military, police and others who “legally” use guns).

Our Congressional Representatives (those elected to either the House or Senate, federal and state legislatures) respond to only two kinds of pressure: money (donations, bribes, extortions) and non-election threats. Let’s use BOTH, here. They will change their votes or go broke (and probably get voted out as well). YAY!

So: charge each Congressional Rep a FINE if s/he votes AGAINST gun safety, gun control, gun laws OF ANY KIND another 10% of the total costs, above, AND use these fines to cover FUTURE gun violence costs, such as extra policing, compensation to families of victims, compensation for employers/workplaces of victims, funds for repairs to venues where shootings occurred, compensations to property owners/users of sites where shootings occurred, compensation to neighborhoods in which decreasing property values occur because of being the sites or being NEAR the sites of gun violence, etc.
