Excerpt

“Let’s get this over with,” I said, pulling the collar of my shirt aside and baring my neck to Reese. I didn’t trust him—not really, not yet—but no one else was around, and I had no choice but to do this.

“First,” he whispered, “let me help you.” He licked his thumb and ran it across the wound the other vampire had left. A tingling, burning sensation followed his touch, and when I reached up to check the bite, I felt the hard edges of a scab—the kind that shouldn’t be there for days, at least, or maybe longer.

I opened my mouth to ask about it, but Reese shook his head and placed his fingertip across my lips.

My heart stuttered as he bent down and slid his tongue gently across the recent wounds he had created, drawing a line of fire between the two puncture marks. Then traced another line with his tongue up a little higher on my neck, following the vein. With a sigh, I closed my eyes, and he sank his fangs into me.

This shouldn’t feel so much like coming home.

I needed to remember where this could end.

“My name is Rylee and I am a Tracker.”

When children go missing, and the Humans have no leads, I’m the one they call. I am their last hope in bringing home the lost ones. I salvage what they cannot.

The clock is ticking and I can feel the weight of the final battle with the demon hordes looming over my head. The puzzle pieces are becoming clearer, but the casualty list is growing. And with each name that is added to those we’ve lost, my confidence cracks a little more.

Yet there is hope.

A child saved.

A life lost.

A prophecy fulfilled.

EXCERPT

“You don’t think that all of the disasters that humanity has faced were all natural, do you? The bubonic plague is a good example. It was blamed on a number of things. Rats, the Jewish people, punishment from God. It all led to a cleansing of anything unusual. Mostly supernaturals, who were trying to blend in, and in that process the humans wiped out many of their best defenders against the demon population, which then went on to spread the plague across the world. But that is just one example.”

“What was the point though, wouldn’t the demons have wanted people to be alive so they could possess them?” Liam asked.

Erik gave a ruthful smile. “Yes and no. The bubonic plague wasn’t so much about killing people off, as it was infecting them. Making them weak and easier to possess. The plague compromised their immune systems, allowing them to be taken over. Especially the young.”

Something about what Erik said sent a twang through my brain. I struggled to put the pieces together that floated just out of reach. Damn it. Liam touched my arm. “What?”

I closed my eyes and pressed my palms into them, blocking out any light. “Just let me think for a minute.”

The feel of the night air and the sound of the fountain filled my ears as I looked at the pieces one by one.

Demons escaped in London who bred fast.

Minor supernaturals were being possessed by lesser demons and evil spirits.

Packs of Orion’s demons were free to cause chaos.

The only thing we were missing was a plague and then Orion would have access to all the young people he wanted. The urge to vomit swelled up through my stomach and burned the back of my throat.

“Children are normally hard to possess, aren’t they?” That was why it had taken a full pentagram when the black coven was trying to have India possessed so many months ago. At least, that was what I understood.

Bert bobbed his head. “Yes, it can be very difficult to possess a child. There is a natural protection over the young when it comes to demons, something the elementals put into play.” He grimaced as he said ‘elemental’ and again I wondered at these particular supernaturals that I’d only just been hearing about. “But when the small humans are ill, that protection goes into keeping them alive, rather than keeping them from being possessed.”

Feeling like a bully, but not really caring, I leaned in to Bert. “How did the bubonic plague really start?”

An interesting thing happened. Bert paled and shook his head. “I can’t tell you.”

My eyebrows shot up and I glanced at Erik. “You want to make him talk, or do you want me to make him talk?”

Erik shrugged. “Either way is fine. I haven’t interrogated a demon in years. I’ve missed it.”

Bert paled even more and his lower lip trembled. “I can’t tell you. I can’t. Tracker, Slayer both of you have to trust me. Please.”

“Begging will get you nowhere, little demon.” Erik growled. He had a short, serrated knife in his hand that he’d pulled from somewhere within his robes. It was curved, like a skinning knife, and if it hadn’t been for the rough edges that’s what I would have called it.

“Track demons and evil spirits.” Bert blurted out as he fell to his knees. “Proof I am on your side. Track them; you’ll see it isn’t me fooling you.”

Erik paused and looked over at me. “Up to you. Personally, I’d just as soon dice him up.”

“Fuck, why not, Tracking will take me two seconds.” I grumbled.

I send out a thread to Track demons as a whole, paired with a thread for evil spirits, just to satisfy—

Holy. Fucking. Hell.

I swayed on my feet and went to one knee, the overwhelming wash of pings I got back seriously making me re-think getting out of bed the day before.

We were surrounded by Orion’s minions.

Hundreds of them.

Spotlight On: Daughter of Isis, by Kelsey Ketch

Title: Daughter of Isis

Author: Kelsey Ketch

Series:  Descendants of Isis #1

Release Date: October 26nd, 2013

Genre: Upper Young Adult Fantasy

“Her mouth parted slightly, waiting for Seth to breathe life into her own body, just like in the story. She wanted him to awaken her senses.”

Their worlds collide in California’s high desert.

The last thing Natara “Natti” Stone wants to do is to start anew at Setemple High School. She wished she had never left London. Yet the brutal murder of her maternal grandmother has made her life very complicated. The only clue related to her murder is an ancient, encrypted necklace Natti discovered after her grandmother’s death. And if trying to adjust to American life is not enough, Natti is being stalked by a mysterious, charming high school senior, Seth O’Keefe, who is annoyingly persistent in his attempts at seduction.

Seth O’Keefe is secretly a member of the Sons of Set, an order that worships the Egyptian god of chaos. Seth’s blessing from Set, his “charm,” never failed, except with one person: Natti Stone. Her ability to elude him infatuates and infuriates him, and he becomes obsessed with the chase. But the closer he gets to her, the more his emotions take a dangerous turn, and he risks breaking one of the most valued covenants of his order. The punishment for which is a fate worse than death.

The adventure this unlikely couple becomes engulfed in could cost them their lives and their souls.

*Note: Content for Upper YA*

Goodreads

Amazon | Barnes and Noble | Kobo | Smashwords“Natti,

you need to relax,” Seth finally said.

Seth

stood up from the long, ratty sofa, peeled apart her hands, and took them into

his. “You don’t know that for sure.” He brushed his thumbs over her skin in

soft, smooth strokes. “Just let the doctors worry about it.”

“Okay .

. .” Natti spoke, almost breathless. “How do you do that?”

“This,”

she pressed. “The sensations of your touch. I’ve been feeling it all night and

even before. Ever since we met. And don’t try to lie. I know you’re doing it,

but how?”

Natti

couldn’t help smile as more of the tingling sensation slipped over her skin.

“Oh, it’s something. What is it?”

“Try

me.”

Though

there was no heaviness of a lie, she chuckled at his response. “You’re right. I

don’t believe you. Touch is just a sense. A tool the human body uses.”

The truck should have turned Libbi Piper into a Libbi Pancake — and it would have, too, if Aaron hadn’t shown up and saved her life. The problem? Aaron’s the local Grim Reaper… and he only saved Libbi’s life because he needs someone to take over his job. Now, Libbi has two days to choose between dying like she was supposed to, or living a lonely life as Death Incarnate. Talk about a rock and a hard place.

And the choice goes from hard to sucktastic when her best friend shows up marked: condemned as a future murderer. Libbi could have an extra week to stop the murder and fix the mark… but only if she accepts Aaron’s job as Reaper, trapping herself in her crappy town forever, invisible and inaudible to everyone except the newly dead. Excerpt

Suddenly, the café had become suffocating and Bobby felt the urge to run. Anywhere. But he wasn’t ready to go hanging around the laundromat and increase his odds of running into Gabe. Instead, he took a huge bite of sandwich to keep himself from blurting something rude.

Dana pulled the newspaper toward her, a cascade of stringy hair hanging in her face. Between the strands, Bobby could see her pouty lips move as she read. “My cousin Rosemarie knows this girl,” she said finally, her gaze still trained on the article. “And now the State Police have pulled Daddy into the case…whoops!” Dana clamped a hand to her mouth. “I shouldn’t have said that. Daddy told me never to talk about official police business.”

Bobby leaned forward, angling the paper so he could look at it again. “Why? Is it a murder investigation now?”

“Let it go, Sherlock.” Coco said. “She said she can’t talk about it.”

Bobby rolled his eyes. “Figures. The one time Dana Barclay has something to say, she’s under a gag order.”

Dana’s eyes flashed to his, something cold and sharp behind the softness, like a needle tucked inside a cotton ball. “Why are you so interested, Bobby?”

“Why not? Nothing ever happens in Graxton.”

“You think a girl disappearing is cool?” Dana stared at him, the corners of her mouth tugged downward. It was a known fact that her father, Sheriff Barclay, hated Bobby’s dad. Chuck Barclay and Sam Pendell had been bitter rivals in high school, a feud that continued into their adult years. Somehow, Dad had always managed to keep a step ahead—until he landed in a wheelchair. Hate like that, Bobby thought, doesn’t just go away. It goes underground and festers, eventually seeping into everything.

Dana stood abruptly. “I have to go. Daddy’s picking me up in five. Movie night in Kingston.”

“Have fun,” Bobby said under his breath. Dana glared at him, face flushed, nostrils flared.

After Dana had left, Coco drummed his fingers on the tabletop. “What the hell was that? I know you two aren’t best friends, but can you at least try to be civil?”

“Sorry. I don’t know what’s got into me today.”

Coco frowned. “You sure you’re feeling okay? You look pale, like the skin on your ugly mug is pulled too tight around your skull.”

Bobby cleared his throat and wondered if the day’s strains showed that clearly on his face. “I’m fine. I was just curious, is all. It’s weird, isn’t it, that they’re keeping it all hush-hush? I wonder what’s really going on.”

Coco slanted his head, still gazing at Bobby with his piercing stare. Bobby knew the prospect of a riddle would be too tempting for his friend to pass up. But just why he was so curious, Bobby couldn’t begin to explain.

“I can ask him for you, if you like,” Coco said. “Barclay’s always tripping over himself to be nice to me. I’ll just kind of mention that Dana is upset by the whole thing. See if he bites and throws me some inside info.”

“No! I mean, never mind. I just thought, if you’d heard chatter…”

“So now I’m Homeland Security.” The glint in Coco’s eye was back and Bobby knew he was forgiven. Coco never stayed mad long.

Bobby threw a piece of lettuce at Coco’s head. A crust of bread sailed back at him. Pete started barking and then Aaron rushed over, picked up a napkin and put it over Coco’s eyes, yelling, “Pirate attack!”

Bobby laughed hard as the memory of their years of zaniness washed over him in a warm wave. He joined Aaron in the attack, and helped pull Coco from the chair to the floor. Pete got busy licking everyone, the three of them wrestling and laughing on the floor like puppies.

Jerry’s voice cut through the mayhem. “Excuse me, boys. We seem to have another customer.”

From the tangle of bodies, Bobby looked up. Arms folded, Gabe stood smirking from the doorway. In the confusion, he hadn’t heard the jangle of the door opening. “Looks like fun. Mind if I join in?”

Coco was on his feet in an instant and, smoothing his rumpled clothes, lunged toward her in a few long-legged strides.

“Welcome! Can I get you anything, madam?” He pulled out a chair at the nearest table and gestured toward it. “Please, have a seat! I’m Coco, otherwise known as James Woods, no relation to the actor of the same name.”

Gabe giggled. “Nice to meet you. I’m Gabriella. But call me Gabe.” Bobby sighed. It was no contest. He could never outshine Coco when it came to charm. In this case, maybe that was a good thing.

Beyond the Count ~ Now Available on Nook, Kobo, and Smashwords!

Beyond the Count high resolution cover

Long before Dracula, vampires stalked the literary scene.

These early literary vampires are sometimes terrifying, at times melodramatic, and occasionally ridiculous, but they are always out for blood—and their vampiric descendants continue to fascinate and captivate us.

Beyond the Count includes an edited collection of vampire stories, plays, and poems from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, annotated and introduced by literary scholar Margo Bond Collins. This collection gives students, scholars, and vampire aficionados alike the opportunity to examine works often long out of print and to contextualize the development of the vampire beyond that most famous of literary Counts.

Guest Post by Carey Decevito, author of Almost Forgotten

Guest Post

A Dollop of Sweet With a Dash of Spice: Insight of an Erotic Romance Author

Put it here.

Tuck it there.

Assorted parts are thrust, screwed and banged into place.

Screaming, hair pulling, tweaking and if everything works out, you’ve got a big

old smile on your face.

No, I’m not talking car mechanics, I’m talking about sex. More specifically, the

way it’s written.

Have you ever come across an intimate scene that left you scratching your head,

wondering how the main characters seem to have all of a sudden become athletes

in the Sex Olympics?

I bet even the best of contortionists or world class gymnasts wouldn’t be able

to replicate some of those moves!

In my case, becoming an erotic romance writer happened purely by accident.

Here I was, writing some new romantic thriller when the idea struck me. Why not

break a few personal writing boundaries? I knew I had a knack for writing

romance, so I thought, “How hard can it be?” Right!

Today, come to mind, when I look back at the journey that’s brought me to

publishing Once Written, Twice Shy and Almost Forgotten, the first two books in

my Broken Men Chronicles series.

The way I blushed fifty shades of red as I wrote those first few scenes is one

of them. Hell, I still blush, particularly when I come up with something

outrageous!

The second: how many times I would rewrite said scenes to get them just right. I

guessed that the most basic sex could turn out so hot! That’s also when I

realized where a lot of authors, who toy with erotic writing, go wrong.

Sex doesn’t need to be all acrobatics and mechanics to be good. It’s nice to

write a shower scene that’s a little over the top, sure—I myself am guilty of

doing it a time or ten—but if the words flow, the emotions show, you don’t need

all those fancy death-defying positions and a minute account to make your reader

feel like the proverbial fly on the wall.

The third is that there is such a thing as too much sex. Build the story and add

some “spice”. A novel can contain a lot more than the average two to three

scenes in it without coming off as crass. It really can be a beautiful piece of

art.

All in all, my foray into erotic-styled writing has definitely led me down a

path I never expected. Suffice to say, it’s not for everyone. Am I happy with my

achievements, of course! Do I plan to write more erotic romances? You bet! Will

I still be blushing by the time I reach a dozen erotic-themed novels? You’re

darn right I will be but I’ll still be putting them out!

In closing, I’d like to thank my host for having me. And for those of you

reading this post, I hope that you’ve laughed, been educated and gotten curious

as to the inner workings of this particular erotic romance author.

About The Author

Born and raised in small town Northern Ontario, Canada, Carey Decevito has had a

penchant for reading and writing for as long as she can remember.

As an adult however, more than a decade had come to pass before sleepless nights

plagued her with exhaustion, demanding that she put pen to paper (more like

fingers to keyboard) and start writing again.

And the rest, as they say, is history!

A writer of erotic romance, this lover of food will throw in a bit of heat, a

dash of sass, a pinch of comedy and a dollop of real-life experience in order to

provide her readers with a story that will mess with their emotions from start

to finish.

Family and friends are her lifeblood but Carey also enjoys conquering the

outdoors, sports, travelling and playing tourist in Canada’s National Capital

region.   When life gets crazy, she seeks respite through her writing and

submersing herself in the latest addition to her library.   If all else fails,

she knows there’s never a dull moment with her prolific story-teller of a

five-year-old daughter, her goofy husband and their two cats who she swears are

out to get her.

With three published works under her belt, Almost Forgotten  is the second of

her  The Broken Men Chronicles series.

About The Book

Jake had it all: money, women, great looks. For all intents and purposes, he was

happy. Or so he thought he was.

A series of women and an unexpected appearance by a ghost from his past caused

him to re-evaluate his life.

Why had she come back? Why was she standing in his firm’s boardroom with his

opposing counsel? But the burning question was, why did he give a damn after

fifteen years?

She’d broken his heart all those years ago and Jake chose to live the life of a

bachelor from there on out. Along with his fast-paced career, he ran a

fast-paced social life. It’s what worked for him. Or he’d at least convinced

himself it did.

The loneliness his large home presented the minute the housekeeper went home and

the women that warmed his bed deserted him, left him wanting. Could he have what

so many of his friends already did: the woman, the family, the house with the

white picket fence? Maybe. But just because he desired these things, things he’d

sworn off ages ago, doesn’t mean that they were destined for him.

One thing was for sure, with Danica back in town, Jake’s life was never going to

be the same again.

Born and raised in central Illinois, she hopes someday to

travel the world – though in the meantime she’ll take any story that whisks her

off to a place where the fantastic lives inside the everyday. She loves strong

without getting her hands on a keyboard, and can usually be found typing away

while she listens to all the adventures unfolding in her head.
