“The Illegal Drug Trade & Street Economy is a Big Part of the American Economy”
By: Therone Shellman 10/07/2013 As a teen I remember watching President Ronald Reagan on the news giving a conference in regards to a large cocaine bust of several kilograms, along with a huge sum of money which were seized by federal agents. He was jokingly mentioning in not so exact words but very similar, "There are those wondering where the money is going come from to pay the U.S. Deficit?" In other words his statement was basically an acknowledgement the illegal drug trade is great for the American economy. (Part of this news clip can be viewed within the video documentary of The Alpo Story from the Street Stars Collection. Alpo was a infamous Harlem, NY dealer during this time). Miraculously years later while still in the midst of a prosperous crack-cocaine era the U.S. deficit did diminish. Along with it middle class America flourished. The mid 1980`s to the late 1990`s were very good times for the American economy. After the recession of 1980 by the time 1983 rolled in the economy rebounded and had begun to grow tremendously. The money earned in the streets went to purchasing cars, jewelry, clothes, homes, and was also spent within local businesses. Some even went on to become legal business owners, and college graduates. The motel and hotel industry witnessed a big boom in growth because; quietly as kept drugs and prostitution is a big part of that business. On the flipside the increase in crime justified the hiring of police officers, the construction of prisons, the hiring of correctional officers, sheriffs, and other jail and prison staff, as well as court staff. Inner-cities became urban war zones which fueled the need for more hospitals, nurses, doctors, EMT workers and other staff. Every village, town, county, city, and State has its own criminal justice system which provides at the least hundreds of jobs. Due to the Rockefeller and mandatory minimum sentencing laws the system which was created by the drug trade had begun to negatively reverse the economic progress created by the drug trade. According to drugwarfacts.org 1/3 of prisoners incarcerated were drug offenders (2011).The price of the drug increased within the wholesale market because of the crack down on the U.S. boarders, cartels and the lengthy prison sentences in the U.S. This in turn drove down the quality due to it being stepped on with every hand it touched until it reached U.S. inner-cities. Ultimately by the year 2010 users who preferred the drug (crack-cocaine) because of poor quality would begin to move on to other drugs like marijuana, pills (designer drugs) and even heroine is seeing a comeback. All of these drugs can be purchased on the street market of even suburbs at a cheaper price than crack-cocaine. It`s hard to imagine the effects the drug would have on the economy as a whole. Any economist would have to honestly agree that a great part of the United States recession can be attributed to the recession in the street drug trade. What`s the use of presenting an issue if not to deal with both sides, the problem and solution? U.S. District Attorney, Eric Holder has begun championing the cause to remove mandatory minimum sentencing in regards to drug offenses. This in many ways will boost the economy by having more people out in society. Whether they are living a life of crime or employed lawfully, the money from their spending will be funneled into the economy in the form of taxes, purchased goods, and other items such as homes. Let’s be honest, alcohol and cigarettes are drugs. Store owners of establishments who sell these products aren`t looked at as murderers, even though many people die daily due to related complications of the use of both. The right to privacy is a constitutional law and no one has the right to regulate what a person chooses to do with their mind or body. Drug dealing amongst adults is a victimless crime. No one is forcing an adult to consume any illegal drug, just as no one is forcing them to go to liquor stores to buy booze, or the convenience store to purchase cigarettes. Never overly concern yourself with failure. If ...

Failures for the thinking and doing individual are but temporary, even if temporary failure is revisited more than once. Success is a thinking and doing man’s/woman’s reward. Sooner or later the road will be paved and a path created from all the trekking and hard work.
Be a willing student, for those who seek must also be willing to learn. Knowledge, wisdom and understanding are but tools built from sacrifice, study and life experience. The glory of your work and accomplishments will show as proof to your virtue and dedication to knocking on the Creators door to serve.
All that you experience you’ll walk with for the rest of your life. Every time you move past an obstacle, win a victory, lose a battle, fall and stumble your subconscious records for you to remember. It is from this point that you become that which you think about most. If you see yourself as failing, then you in turn welcome failure as an ultimate destination point you and all of who you are. Your whole existence will be a failure because this is what you believe yourself to be. Now if you believe that ultimately your temporary failures build a path to success then you affirm that good because you’re of good is yours to have. It’s just the process of learning and doing that, which will bring it to you permanently.
If you seek success, wealth and prosperity and wish to not give up individuality and personality all that you gain today will ultimately be lost in the days to come. That which is not built in love has no foundation. All houses built from the top to bottom shall surely crumble. Our Creator is Love and all things sought and built through him are possible. While the man dwelling in self-love may acquire through mortal mind that which he acquires he cannot keep for all things built with emotions are unstable. It is only through the Creators understanding that creations and services serve unselfishly within his plan and that of all fellow humans, animals and nature.
“Who I am today has everything to do with who I was yesterday along with past experiences and the knowledge gained through it all. Today I have good thoughts about who I am, and because I think this way about myself my confidence level in regards to what I can do and accomplish is sky high. As a teen and into my twenties consciously I felt I was a young man with a lot of talent and ambition that was a bit powerless because of restrictions I really thought were hindering me from progressing.
1. I was on parole. 2. I didn’t have any real family support. 3. I was a young African American male with a felony.
All these things led me to believe the world was against me in some way. Since my central thoughts focused on the negative I acted this out by selling drugs and committing other crimes. I did all this when it probably would have just took a little more effort to go out and get a job. At twenty-eight years old, I decided to make clean break and change my life. I at once took control of my mind, thoughts and ultimately my actions. Like clockwork, I began to obtain different results, and as a result my self-confidence began building until I came to the point where I was secure with myself, and fixed on the thought that we are what we think.”
