The Summer Slow Down
Where did everyone go? In April your social media was growing rapidly, fans were interacting, and you were the king or queen of your social media realm. Now, it’s June and everyone has fled. Your content seems just as interesting, just as good, yet no one is commenting or liking. Your ads are still running, they’re still targeting the same select audience, but fewer people on clicking through. So what happened?
It’s called summer and there’s nothing you can do about the sudden drop in interaction. Kids are out of school. The perfect vacation destinations are calling. Schedules are unusual and skewed across the board. When all these things collide, the first area people cut back is social media.
Although you can’t stop the slow down, you can take advantage of it. Here on some tips on surviving the summer slow down.
Don’t panic. Summer is a slow time for almost everyone. If your interactions start dropping, fans don’t seem interested in your giveaways, and fewer and fewer people are enjoying your content, it’s okay. It’s not just you. It’s everyone.
See it as an opportunity. If your followers aren’t paying as much attention, see that as an opportunity to try new content, contests, ideas, and networks that you’ve been wanting to try but haven’t had the chance. If you’ve had an idea but you never implemented it because you were worried about a negative backlash, now is your chance. See what new ideas could go over big. When things pick back up in the fall, your window of opportunity for trial-and-error might be gone.
Keep moving forward. Just because your fans aren’t as active doesn’t mean you should stop too. Summer is a great chance for you to reach a new audience. Take this chance to find followers and interactors who would normally be too busy for your content or would be looking at the wrong time. You might be surprised.
Assume they’ll be back come August/September. They’ll be back. Once kids head back to school and summer vacations are over, your fans will be back and on track. Take the summer to plan for the fall push. Refresh your techniques. Invent new tactics. Find new research tools. Your fans will be ready for you in the fall. Be ready for them.
That said: enjoy these few short months of summer. They’ll be gone before you know it. Get the most out of them.
