Happy 67th birthday, Paul Auster! As a novelist, he is preoccupied with the concept of chance. At 14, Auster was standing next to a friend who was struck and killed by a bolt of lightning.

FOREIGN EXCHANGE, a new novel by Nick Hahn, due 2014.
I started in the back streets of Karachi where there are no street names or addresses. You either knew where 
you were going or you didn’t get there. This is the cultural backwater of the country where it all comes together in a kaleidoscopic melange of sights, sounds, and smells. This, for me, is what Pakistan is about, not the sanitized streets of Islamabad or the commercial offices of Lahore. This is where light and dark are indistinguishable, where good and evil mix in a cauldron of grey matter. This is where I’ll find out where they’ve taken Alex.

PREFACE
Islamic extremists, if nothing else, are patient. They understand western culture and our complacency over time. Complacency is their ally and our achilles heel. There will be more attacks in the US, they will be massive and destructive, exposing an open artery in our defenses created by politicizing homeland security policy and procedures. Western powers, including and most aggressively the United States, have increased global surveillance at the cost of their international standing. Phone taping and on-line surveillance have become technology art forms. There are no longer “secure communications”. Sophisticated systems worldwide, those of friends and foes alike, are being compromised in an ever widening arc of US National Security Agency (NSA) eavesdropping. The moral conundrum of the end justifying the means is clarified in an American President’s oath of office, “…..defend without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion….”

Nick donates book proceeds to INVISIBLE CHILDREN, Inc
A portion of each book we sell on Amazon will be 
donated to the Invisible Children effort to expose injustice and brutality in East Africa. IC is building awareness of Joseph Kony’s band of marauders, the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) and the kidnapping of children turning them into boy soldiers and girl sex slaves.
