I wrote a scene from Dieter's point of view a couple days ago. I've done a few scenes from his POV for a future book, but this is the first one that's going to see the light of day. It'll be in Episode 4.

This teaser will be removed in 24 hours.

SPOILERS FOR RAE ***AND LIZZY*** BELOW.
*
*
*
An hour later, the Gulfstream jet’s engines revved up, whining as the packed plane rotated to taxi to the runway. Dieter sat beside one of the white-haired German lawyers who probably wouldn’t understand Allemanic, the Swiss dialect that von Hannover and all the security men spoke.

Dieter cranked his muscle-bound body around in his seat, regretting slacking off on his flexibility training yet again, to check that Wulfram was far in the back of the plane, still sitting beside Rae Stone.

Most people wouldn’t see the difference in him, but Dieter could. Every time that Wulfram looked at that woman, he caught his breath like his heart had started beating again. Every time another man looked at her, Wulfram’s breath stilled like he was pulling the trigger on his sniper rifle.

Dieter only wished that his own wife had that effect on him, but he loved her. They had a daughter who would be nearly as beautiful as her mother. His work left very little time for arguing, anyway.

He dialed Luca on his cell phone. “Do you have Valencia and Pajari yet?”

“Negative,” Luca said. “Valencia is not answering his phone, and Pajari never had one of our European SIM cards installed.”

“Elands. Use Grimaldi’s security for the hotel. Send everyone else into Paris to find them before we land in the States.”

“Before you land? Von Hannover is leaving without them secured? How in great, sulfurous Hell did you convince him to be sensible?”

“I told him that we had Valencia and Pajari at the hotel.”

“Jesus Fucking Christ.”

“He will fire me as soon as he discovers it, no matter what happens to Valencia and Pajari. If you don’t find them safe by the time we land, he will also kill me with his bare hands.”

He torqued himself around to glance at Wulfram and Reagan again. They were speaking softly, foreheads together. Wulfram was smiling a small, real smile, not that cold slash he showed the world.

Dieter turned back and stretched his long legs to the bulkhead, saying to Luca, “But he’s not going to die on his wedding day.”

Episode 2 Rough Draft is DONE!

I HAVE FINISHED EPISODE 2!

Jeez, Louise, that was a marathon. There was a whole lot of write - take out - write more - take out - rethink theme - take out - character revelation - rewrite, etc.

It's 59,000 words long, which is 9,000 words longer than I thought it would be, but the natural break is right there.

The good news is that, because I wrote some scenes ahead, I'm about 25% done with Episode 3.

Hey: Here's some of Episode 1, a sneak peek!

The crowd at The Devilhouse’s audition party roamed like a herd of well-dressed wildebeests milling around several alcoholic watering holes.

Over the packed heads at the party, one man stared back at [Lizzy].

He stood against the wall near the windows that overlooked the city sparkling in the night. His jet black hair fell silky-smooth over his shoulders, and his hot blue eyes locked on hers. His black suit did nothing to slim his muscled body, though the fabric clung to his rounded shoulders and moved like it was from a high-end designer. Lizzy had learned a few things about expensive men’s fashions while working at a club with a six-figure initiation fee.

When the guy shifted his weight, Lizzy could tell from across the room that he was musclebound under his clothes. His cheekbones and jawline were sharp slashes, and his broad shoulders cut a stark inverted triangle out of the white wall behind him. One tendril of a black tattoo reached out of his white collar and up his tanned neck.

He was still staring at her.

Wow.

Even from fifty feet away and over the crowd of heads, Lizzy could see that his fiery eyes were the color of blue-hot stars.

Lizzy bet that guy could distract her from her current Dom-obsession. She could practically see heat mirage lines coming off him because that man smoldered.

Review: Descent and Ascension Series by SM Reine

Once in a while, I’ll recommend some books that I’ve enjoyed. No spoilers here, but I will set up the premise.
Also, I am ALWAYS looking for new books to read. Please feel free to recommend books in the comments. Amazon links are helpful but not necessary!
Caveat: I read widely, across many genres, so I’ve specified what genre each book is. If you don’t read in that genre, that’s cool. Check out the next book.

Urban Fantasy:
 I recently pointed y’all toward Angelfall by Susan Ee, and if you like that book, I have an enormous treat for you.
I am now a huge, massive, rabid fangirl of SM Reine. The Descent series is simply one of the best series that I have read, ever. The sequel series, Ascension, is also incredible. For both, the plotting is amazing, with some of the most perfect pivots I have ever read. The characters are flawed and striving and deeply felt. The core relationship between Elise and James is, to say the least, complicated, and it is developed deeply enough to more than sustain the 12 books SO FAR in this series. At least three more are planned. The prose is—and I hate the word for its snobby Byattesque connotations but it applies—numinous. The world-building is impeccable and thorough in ways that Tolkien and George RR Martin could only aspire to. If you think Susan Ee’s angels are malevolent, wait until you meet Metareon. I will never look at blue eyes the same way again.
One of the most masterful feats of writing that I have ever witnessed is that the entire Descent series is foreshadowed and contained in the very first scene. Main character James Faulkner has one of the most astonishing character arcs that I have ever seen in fiction. There may be no parallel. Main character Elise Kavanaugh may be the most kick-ass heroine who has ever lived, and yet changes so profoundly during the series that she will break your heart and make you wish you were her, and yet she will still kick your ass. She grows up, from a damaged, traumatized teen to a woman who can convincingly become a Hell Lord and (it is suggested) will invade Heaven itself.
I reread books rarely, like Orlando by Virginia Woolf and Lolitaby Nabokov, and I have read probably tens of thousands of books in my adult life. I have read this whole series at least twice now, and parts of it several times beyond that. These are some of the best books that I have ever read, and the first three are free on your reader. You should read these.
If there are any caveats, they are that the occasional sex scenes are explicit and heart-wrenching and that there are three more books still to be published. The next one, Lost in Prophecy, is due in March, 2014. I just want to ask SM Reine to wear her seat belt. Oh, yeah, and she’s writing three other series at the same time and throwing down a full-length novel every month. Jaw-dropping.

Recommended Reading: WOOL by Hugh Howey

Once in a while, I’ll recommend some books that I’ve enjoyed. No spoilers here, but I will set up the premise.
Also, I am ALWAYS looking for new books to read. Please feel free to recommend books in the comments. Amazon links are helpful but not necessary!

Caveat: I read widely, across many genres, so I’ve specified what genre each book is. If you don’t read in that genre, that’s cool. Check out the next book.
Science Fiction: WOOL by Hugh Howey.
Reviewed in many other places. As good as they say. This is a book that I tell people they must, must read.
My book club passed a rule that we would read no more books by men with female main characters, because we read four in a row that sucked giant, radioactive donkey balls. (No, I won’t say, but they were all literary and prize-winners.)
Hugh Howey is one of the very, very few men who can write a convincing female character, and he does it incredibly well, several times in this series of interconnected stories. His female leads are complex, feminine and yet not girlie, and deeply human. He doesn’t go for the nubile stereotypes. Some of his leads are mature women.
The twists and turns in the plot will spin your head, in a good way. The premise is that a nanotechnology apocalypse has forced mankind to retreat to an enormous bunker, called a Silo, like they are the stored seeds of humanity. The symbolism in these books is perfect in that it flavors and enhances the prose but does not overwhelm the reader by stomping around, screaming, I AM A SYMBOL! The prose is subtle, evocative, and carefully done.
As with many excellent series, the first one is free for your ereader.
Another book that I can’t say enough about, and Ridley Scott is directing the movie. You should read this.

Sneak Peek Scene: The Devilhouse Books: Lizzy.

~~~Spoilers for "The Devilhouse Books: Rae" Below~~~No major spoilers for Lizzy's book.Just teasers.
~
In the Louvre, right after Wulf proposes.
~
Deep in the warrens of the Louvre, guarded by his Welfenlegion men at every intersection around them, Wulf held his phone and watched Reagan, his Reagan, and now she would indeed be his Reagan, as she took a few steps away to text Georgiana. From just a few feet away, he could see how her hands trembled around her phone. She blinked as if she couldn’t quite focus on the tiny screen.
He could hardly wait to get her back to the hotel. Leaving so early would insult Flicka and scandalize the nobility, but he considered it, nevertheless.
Wulf dialed Frau Keller’s cell phone number because she deserved to know first, even though she was in the Louvre’s noisy ballroom area, enjoying Flicka’s wedding reception.
His house manager answered with an efficient, “Ja?”
“She said yes,” Wulf said in German. Wulf had stolen Frau Keller from his father when she had been running Schloss Marienburg in Hannover, a palace coup that still rankled the old man. “It will be tomorrow, as soon as possible.”
“Very good, Herr von Hannover. I’ll begin preparations,” she said. “It is three o’clock in the US. The lawyers’ plane will be in the air in two hours.”
“Thank you, Frau Keller.”
“And I congratulate you, Wulfram.”
“Thank you, Rosamunde.” If he had been standing beside her, he would enjoyed seeing her slow smile, but at least he heard it in her voice.
Next, Wulf dialed Theo Valencia’s number and lifted his phone to his ear. The international transfers clicked, and rings rattled through the signal.
“Hello?” Theo’s voice sounded angry through the phone. “Mr. von Hannover?”
“Call me Wulf. The plane will leave in two hours. You will be on it?”
“Oh, hell, yes. I need to get out of this place before I strangle someone.”
“Pleased to be of service.”
Rae came back, frowning at her phone. “Georgie says that Lizzy’s there so she can’t leave.”
That was a rare opportunity. “Tell her to bring Lizbeth. Unfortunately, the chartered plane is full, so they’ll have to fly commercial.” He paused. “Is she all right?”
Rae held up the phone so he could read the glowing screen. “This is what I know.”
Wulf scanned it. “Tell her to use any means necessary to get Lizbeth on that plane. I’ll alert Rosamunde that we’ll need commercial tickets as well. Rosamunde will call them for their details.”
“I’ll text them back, then. They can raid the Devilhouse costume closet for clothes.” Rae glanced up, her sweet eyes widened. “I can’t get married. I don’t have a wedding dress.”
“It’s just the civil wedding. You don’t need one of those—” In a rare instance, his English failed him so he mimed the fluff and froufrou that Flicka had been wearing at the church.
“The virgin suit,” Rae said.
“Quite. Flicka wore a cocktail dress for her civil ceremony. I believe you have an ecru lace ensemble that you haven’t worn.”
Rae’s mouth opened a little, and Wulf wanted to kiss her again. Every time she moved, every hand gesture, every bend of her supple body, he restrained himself.
She said, “You planned that, too.”
The truth was far worse. “Not at all. It hadn’t even occurred to me that we would need particular clothes. That dress was Flicka’s entirely unsubtle hint. She always was a conniving child.”
