When you go outside on your own, outside your house, your city, your state, your country, you want to make a metaphorical dent in the universe, an everlasting footprint in the sands of time, but instead what you find is a world that you wish never existed. You feel deeply and genuinely sad. You see so much suffering and sorrow. You don’t want to live in such a world. You actually wished it did not exist, not like this at least.
Society is full of naysayers and blamer-givers and procrastinators. We, as part the same society, may ourselves elect to do the same and sit in front of our TVs listening to the 100th tragic news report or media trial or shameful expose and try to justify the corruption, the shamelessness, the suffering, the injustice and the sorrow, or we can elect to exercise our birth right as Indians provided to us by our historic constitution.
Today, out of many such memories, I remember a class in Civics by Meeta ma’am, way back. The crux of lecture was that: We can not demand for our rights when we do not perform our duties!
As I am writing this, today is my first chance to vote and I will go to vote so that my actions like the drop of water or grain of sand would contribute to something much greater than any of us.
All I can say is that you should do so too. Go and place your vote if you haven’t already. Maybe your actions can give us a responsible government so that children even younger than me don’t have to be afraid to go out and make their own dents in the universe. So that they don’t have to be in sad for the world we live in, the world we are born in.
