Preparing Your Child to Make Good Choices in Mates

I’m having great difficulty blocking out the news of another tragedy where senseless killings were carried out in Isla Vista, California. Another 20-something male decided to end his life, and took six innocent young people with him.

Books for Teens to Help Them Grow

What makes this incident more difficult for me is the fear I feel for my 16-year-old who is starting to date. She is going to

The Good and the Bad of Entrepreneurship

Recently, I was asked what I learned along the way of building my nontraditional company, Cooperative Kids.  The writer was working on a piece on entrepreneurship and wanted to know if I had learned good things or bad things while growing my business.  Here is what I told her.

I developed a love for helping parents with challenging

How to Teach Kids to Care

and Bill LongShaw

I hear parents complain that their kids don’t appreciate what they have. So much is available to our kids today that it’s hard for them to imagine being without. Then when they push their parents for more, it triggers a feeling of resentment for the parents as they think about all they've done and provided for their kids so far.

My own kids

How to Coach a Teen to Drive Safely

Our youngest turned 16 this year and before too long, she’ll be driving.  We already have a used car parked in our driveway that will be getting a tune up, new tires and a full inspection.  We didn’t pay much for it and I wouldn’t trust it on long trips, but it will become her transportation to get her to school and to work and back.  And

Happy Parent, Happy Child

Two pianos were sitting next to each other in a room.  A person sitting at one piano pressed one key,
causing a tone to fill the air.
Instantly, the string responsible for creating the same tone on the
OTHER piano began to vibrate.  This isn’t
the start of a joke, but an experiment that has been tested by physics
experts.  The tone created by the first
piano is a wave of vibrations that are

Will Your Kids be a Whiner or a Winner?

Are you as worried as I am about the children of generation Z (born 1995 – 2012) and their ability to solve problems?  With the increase in the number of helicopter parents (parents who “swoop” in to make everything all better) and a generation of highly sensitive kids, how well are our children going to be able to identify and solve their own problems?

Start Letting Your Kids Write on the

How to Destroy Your Child's Emotional Intelligence

It’s BAD PARENTING 101… that’s what I term some of the
advice being offered by Jim Fay and his LOVE AND LOGIC program.  His latest newsletter that arrived in my
email box tells parents that when their child demonstrates any typical
challenging behaviors, such as lying, arguing or getting mad, the parent should
immediately use his “energy drain” technique to get the child to stop.

The Family Manual - Idea for Foster Families

I was hired recently to conduct a training session for 40
foster parents who were in dire need of some help managing the challenging
behaviors of their foster tweens and teens. Some of the stories the foster parents
shared with me following the two hour session were heart-breaking: teens
attempting to run away, intentional thefts, and even attempts by some teenagers
to hurt others. Hearing the

Help! Our Teen Smoked Pot!

The parent who sent me this message was seeking help with
choosing the right punishment for her teen’s bad choice.  I advised her that punishment rarely works in
teaching children valuable lessons and actually can backfire and cause more
problems than what the parents started with.
In most cases, the only things that a punishment accomplishes are making
the child fearful of the parent and to

The One Best Gift You Could Ever Give

It’s nearly Christmas and I’m shopping at a department
store.  A woman in the isle just ahead of
me is pushing her shopping cart and begging her daughter to cooperate with
her.  The little girl appears to be about
four or five years of age and is dragging her feet and whining that she’s too
tired to walk.  Her mom looks very tired
and continues to plead with the child to keep moving.
