Over the Edge Excerpt

IAN

The vodka had just about worn off, but the Red Bulls hadn’t. The sun had been up for an hour when I stopped staring at the ceiling and finally went to the kitchen. I’d spent the night throwing back some drinks and talking shit with pals from work. I’d even talked to a few women that I could have pursued, but I couldn’t stop thinking about Liv in Will’s bed. The potent visual flooded my thoughts every time I contemplated bringing someone home.

Thousands of pretty girls in New York, but the irrefutable truth was that no one could hold a candle to Olivia Bridge. She wasn’t a diamond in the rough. She was just a fucking diamond—beautiful, refined, smart. A prize for any man.

Except she was Darren’s sister…and Will’s new fucktoy.

It had been a late night at the bar, extended further by a few more hours of listening to Liv’s primal screams. I’d been hard half the night, and now my body refused to succumb to sleep.

I scowled and pushed scrambled eggs around a frying pan, eager to satisfy at least one of my basic instincts.

I’d never had anything but an easy camaraderie with Will, but right now I fucking hated the man. I hated him for being the one to have her last night. If I hadn’t been so honorable for once in my life, I’d have been the one making her scream my name.

“Oh, I’m sorry.”

I turned, and Liv was standing in the middle of the kitchen, wearing nothing but a white T-shirt that she was tugging down at the hem. Her makeup had worn off. Her hair was tousled, her lips were full, and her skin glowed. She was impossibly beautiful.

I took a deep breath and reminded myself to be good—whatever the hell that meant. For the moment, I’d try to pretend like I hadn’t heard her in the throes of ecstasy for hours. I wouldn’t let on that I’d spent those hours fantasizing about all the ways I could take her over the edge, with or without Will.

I cleared my throat. “You hungry?”

She chewed her lip and eyed the food cooking on the stove. “A little, actually.”

“Sit.” I motioned toward the stools that lined the kitchen island. “I’ll make you a plate.”

She took a seat and tucked her hair behind her ear shyly. I turned away and tried to focus on the task at hand. But having her in the same room was distracting as fuck. Either that or I was still half drunk.

I finished cooking the eggs and the sausages that sizzled on the burner and made us each a plate. We ate in silence, and as the minutes passed, the tension saturated the air between us. She was close enough to touch, and that’s all I could think about—tangling my fingers in her hair and kissing her breathless.

When she finished, she set down her fork and pushed her plate away. “I wanted to thank you for your…discretion,” she said quietly, breaking me from my single-minded thoughts.

“Thank you for yours.”

Her brow wrinkled.

“Darren pretty much forbade me from even looking at you. It’s been nice to cheat a little. Even if he’ll skin me alive if he ever knew what I know.”

She blushed with a small smile. “You saved his life. Hopefully he’d forgive you. I doubt he’d forgive me.”

“Big brothers are overprotective. I get it. I’ve got four little sisters.”

“Yeah…” She picked up one of the little green fruits that were piled into a bowl on the counter. She rolled it between her fingers, studying it, but her thoughts seemed far away.

“Try one,” I said, grabbing one for myself.

“What are they?”

“Quenepa. I get them at the Caribbean market down the street. Reminds me of the Dominican. They call them limoncillo there. Little kids would sell them on the beach, and I ate them like crazy.” I cracked the green skin of one with my teeth before popping the sweet fruit into my mouth.

“Did you grow up there?”

I worked the flesh off the fruit and removed the seed, reaching for another.

“No, my mom did, though. I used to spend summers there with my sisters to see family. You know, until we grew up and had to find real jobs.” I smirked, but something told me she didn’t know that much about summer jobs. Darren was as down to earth as they came, but he and his siblings were born into money. The kind of money I knew nothing about.

She shrugged with a smile. “Nothing like the summers of youth.”

“No kidding. Now it’s running into burning buildings and laying tile. Not nearly as fun.”

“Seems like you’ve all got side gigs. Like risking your lives every day isn’t enough.” She folded her arms and leaned in.

I shrugged. “Yeah, but I’ve had this one since high school. I learned the trade from my dad. He put me to work as soon as I could be trusted with power tools.”

She laughed. “Do you still work together?”

“Nah.” I shook my head and avoided her penetrating gaze.

I was mixed up enough. Last thing I wanted to talk about was my father…or that gaping hole in my chest that his death had left behind. I tensed my jaw. Nope. Wasn’t going there.

“I guess I should get cleaned up.” She stood, came beside me, and reached for my plate.

“I can get this. Don’t worry about it.” I rose, stopping her. But as I did, I sensed her heat. My breath caught being this close. Close enough that I could inhale her lavender scent and see the small reactions of her body. Her short breathing, her nipples getting hard under Will’s T-shirt. Her back was to the counter. Another few inches in her direction, and I’d have her pinned.

Her gaze flickered up to mine and then lowered down my bare chest. She reached out and softly traced the mosaic of ink that stretched across half my torso.

My heart raced. All my senses went on high alert, reacting to her proximity. I tensed, silently praying that this would be her last night here. I’d never known Will to let a girl stay overnight. I had no idea what his plan was. I didn’t want Will to hurt her, but I couldn’t do this. She was temptation personified, and I was so fucked right now.

“What does it mean?” Her voice was as soft and sensual as her touch.

I shook my head, my jaw tight. “Doesn’t matter.”

A hundred women might have asked me the same question, but for the first time since the needle had hit my skin, I wanted to say it out loud. I wanted to tell her. But I couldn’t…wouldn’t.

When she pulled her hand away, I caught it and pressed it back against my ribs. My hand covered the delicate planes of hers. I took the last step that had us nearly touching, and she sucked in a breath. I caressed up her arm, slowly, reveling in her softness. I sifted my fingers through the silky strands of her hair and angled her face up to me. Her eyes were hazy. Those beautiful rose-colored lips parted like they were begging without words. And she didn’t move, even as my skin burned under her touch. I bent toward her, craving those luscious lips, inhaling her scent into my lungs. Even as my mind screamed…

Don’t do this.

Don’t fucking do this.

Into the Fire Excerpt

Here's a little excerpt from INTO THE FIRE which releases on June 21st. I'm so excited to share Darren Bridge with the world very soon! Enjoy this sneak peek in the meantime :)

More details

EXCERPT
Into the Fire
Into the Fire by Meredith Wild

“Ladies get in free.” The guy manning the door of The Bearded Lady nodded toward Eli. “Ten bucks.”

Eli did little to hide his irritation, rolling his eyes as he shoved a ten at the man who then stamped our hands, gaining us entrance into the already crowded Brooklyn bar.

“I can’t believe he made me pay to get in here,” Eli said.

“Just because you’re gay doesn’t mean you don’t have to pay.”

I pushed past a few clusters of people. The extended work week fatigue was even more real now, and I was determined to make the most of these last few hours of down time before take off tomorrow.

One of the few rituals I maintained was keeping plans on a Saturday night. While they weren’t quite as wild as they’d once been since my friend Maya had retired as my “work hard, play hard” partner in crime months ago, they were still plans that kept me sane. Almost two years at the firm felt more like twelve, and I couldn’t remember a time when I hadn’t worked long hours, bending my schedule around Reilly’s whims and wants.

“Just because you dragged me into this meat market doesn’t mean I’m not going to bitch about it, Vanessa.” Eli slid his slender fingers through his jet-black hair, something he habitually did since it was always overgrown. The tips of his bangs were dyed an electric blue, perfectly matching the bright blue band logo on his T-shirt.

I wedged myself into a place at the bar, hoping to secure enough real estate to flag down a drink. “First round is on me, and we’ll call it even.”

I tried in vain to get the bartender’s attention. I wasn’t in my usual bar hopping attire, so I didn’t have any cleavage to bare to help my cause.

Beside me, Eli scanned the room. “Have to say, this place has some decent scenery. Ladies night brings the man candy, doesn’t it?”

I smiled. How quickly the tides had turned. “I thought you hated the meat market.”

He cocked his head with a sigh. “Depends on the meat.” A mischievous little smirk tilted his lips. “Oh, I see a familiar slice right over there.”

I followed his gaze across the bar, expecting to see one of Eli’s old flings.

Decent scenery indeed. Not ten feet away stood Darren Bridge. I shouldn’t have been that excited about seeing a man I barely knew, but my heart began to beat double time. Something about him called to me…

I wished I could have been blind to what that something was, but the bad boy alarms went off like crazy in my head every time I was around him. I needed a bad boy in my life like I needed a second job. Still, no harm in getting an eyeful.

He wore a white Henley that did little to obscure the impressive body beneath. The man was a beast in the gym. Every hard curve of his muscled body was enhanced by the fact that he was gorgeous as hell. His face was mostly obscured to me now, so I consoled myself with the rest of the view. His dark hair was trimmed neatly on the sides, but he kept it messy and longer on top. Made a girl want to run her hands right through it. Enviable olive skin wrapped around the corded muscles of his neck and forearms. He turned slightly, baring straight teeth and a dazzling smile, and I saw him rather than heard him laugh.

Was the object of his attention a woman? I wouldn’t have been surprised, but he was talking to another guy, no less ripped or good looking. As if Darren attracting unnaturally good-looking guys to his circle was as effortless as attracting the women who were eye-fucking him all over the damn bar. Myself included.

Eli elbowed my rib and shot me a knowing smile.

“Shut up,” I preempted.

He laughed. “I didn’t say anything. Your face, though…”

“He’s bad news, and you know it. He breaks hearts for a living.”

“Right after he breaks your bed. I bet he fucks like a demon.”

The mere suggestion had my skin heating uncomfortably. Wouldn’t I like to know…

I resisted the urge to tell Eli to shut up again before he could continue painting a fantasy of Darren Bridge that I’d already stitched together since meeting him months ago. Maya had warned me then that Darren was a manwhore and to keep my distance if I couldn’t handle that. Easy enough. Drinks and clubbing could always lead to bad decisions, but even though he’d stuck by my side all night, he’d barely given me a peck on the cheek by the time the night was over.

Either the rumors were wrong and he was actually a gentleman, or more likely, I wasn’t his type and he was simply being polite by keeping me company that night.

I turned and leaned against the bar, giving up on getting the attention of the bartender. I needed to stare at something other than Darren’s toned back.

“Guys like Darren always look great on first glance. It’s a mirage. No one is ever that hot and good in bed.”

Eli lifted an eyebrow. “What kind of bullshit theory is that?”

I shrugged. Sometimes I made up rules to make myself feel better about my personal reality. Deep down I knew my theory was bullshit too. Cameron was equally gorgeous, and Maya didn’t have any complaints. Then again, they’d been in love for years. I hadn’t known the pleasure of sleeping with someone I loved for far too long, and if what Maya said about Darren’s reputation was true, he probably hadn’t stopped the whore tour long enough to fall in love with anyone.

“Miss?”

I turned to find two dirty martinis placed in front of me, as if by magic.

“I didn’t order these.”

“Do you want them? The guy down there put them on his tab.” The once-elusive bartender jerked his thumb in the direction behind him.

I narrowed my eyes. “What guy?”

“I think this one, V.” Eli nudged me again, gentler this time.

Then a warm hand was at my hip, grazing softly across my back as I turned. My breath caught at the sight of Darren. Somehow his presence seemed to suck up all the oxygen around me.

“Not dirty enough?” He smiled.

And my heart went flying again.

My Next Writing Project

Now that Hard Love has released and the Hacker Series is officially complete, many of you have asked what I plan to write next. After feeling indecisive about it for a while, I finally realized that the novel I really needed to write was Into the Fire. Because I miss Cam and Maya, and more importantly, because you all have been incredibly patient waiting for the sequel to this series that started with On My Knees over a year ago!

Darren and Vanessa are already heating up the pages, and I’m so excited to bring you their story and to continue Cam & Maya’s as part of their world.

While Into the Fire is starting to take shape, I’m not quite far enough into it to set an exact release date, but I’m tentatively planning for an early summer 2016 release. Stay tuned for more details, blurbs, and of course, the cover!

Thank you for all your support! Be sure to add Into the Fire to your TBR! Into the Fire

Hard Limit Prologue is Here!

Blake's Prologue Is Here

Read the first official excerpt from Hard Limit today!

"E: Meet me at the club in 10 minutes. Please don’t be mad."

I reread Erica’s text until my brain caught up to her meaning.

Fucking hell.

The club she was referring to could only be one. My knuckles went white, as if gripping the phone on the brink of crushing it might stop her from doing this. Drawing in a deep breath that did nothing to calm me, I pulled up her number and held the phone to my ear. I listened to the endless ring, biting back the string of curses that would fly if she picked up. I knew she wouldn’t...
