A New Day – 27 – Couple’s Collabo Dinner

A New Day – 27 – Couple’s Collabo Dinner

This post and the next few are a bit of catch up although they were taken on the days recorded. Today’s picture for Day 26 is a sort of fancy version of steak nachos with sauté vegetables. I was making the veggies for a dip when my boyfriend smelled them in the pan and thought oh no, we can make something else with these! So he came up with mixing them with some left-over steak, nacho cheese and a couple different kinds of chips. They were fabulous (once we got over taking pictures of them ;-) ).

A New Day – 26 – Incoming Blizzard

A New Day – 26 – Incoming Blizzard

On this day the weather forecast called for and warned of 4-6 inches of snow and a winter weather advisory. I’ll admit, I was a bit doubtful, after all they were predicting 38 degrees Fahrenheit for the following day, come on! But there I sat in front of the window and watched as the snow started to fall.

Slowly at first; it was on and off

Incoming short blizzard2

The snow would come down as you see here fairly steady, but nothing too crazy and then it would stop. Then it would pick up again, each time getting a bit heavier in snow fall.

A little bit more snow with this drop...

A little bit more snow with this drop…

And it kept coming, and then stopping, and then starting...

And it kept coming, and then stopping, and then starting…

But let me tell you, oh ho let me tell you, by the end of the day… (the pictures below are obviously not the same location but still the same town, these are in a parking lot.)

Not the same location as earlier in the day but I had to catch the mayhem nonetheless.

Can you say WHiTE-OUT?

Lovely isn't it? The worst part is, it got worse, and I didn't get any pictures of that!

And as I said in my caption, the storm got worse as the night went on. Wish I could say I got some pics of that but I didn’t, I was too busy trying to survive it!!! The blizzard conditions did let up after several hours but not without leaving its mark.

Aren’t we all ready for a little bit of Spring weather? Hmm, yup, I think so… How bout you, what’s your weather been like?

A New Day – 25 – Winter Wildlife

A New Day – 25 – Winter Wildlife

Can you see the Great Blue Heron along the back edge of the shore?

When we pay attention and are present in the moment we can see what's beautiful even in the cold as well as what isn't so obvious.

When we pay attention and are present in the moment we can see what’s beautiful even in the cold as well as what isn’t so obvious.

it’s not always that obvious. Worse yet, I think, is that a lot of

the time some of us are a bit depressed by the winter, the lack

of sunshine, being cooped up in the house or stuck shoveling

(especially this winter!) and that leaves us not even interested

in what there is to be had. But what I’ve actually found this

winter that having a creative outlet is an incredible way to fight

cabin fever and the winter blues. While I’ve been a bit absent

here in the last week or so I have had my creative outlets on my

mind all the time.

I wrote a piece about running (started it back up earlier this

year) in the cold that I’m quite proud of and plan to submit,

which I’ll absolutely let you know when ;-) it gets accepted

somewhere… I have been able to take some photos and I’ve

been brainstorming a bit fiercely, for example I’d like to plan

some “photography” centered trips especially for birding. While

I know I can’t do this whenever, however I can make it a point

to do it at all. There are a lot of trails and parks that I’ve yet to

visit and/or been to in a while. Getting out there means new

photography opportunities, something that I know this 365 is

already bringing to me. In addition to planning some “Photo-

graphy Adventures”  winter requires me to ask the question of

what else is going on in winter life, what creative opportunities are out there?

On this day I went out to a trail/park that I frequent the rest of the year for runs, walks, and bike rides. I quickly remembered just how much wildlife there is in this area. Last year I posted about a run/bike ride during which I saw a snapping turtle laying eggs just off the trail and a pair of owl chicks in the middle of the trail. This evening I headed out around dusk (gonna have to get out earlier next time) and saw a couple of Great Blue Herons, MANY deer, three Snow Geese headed down the river no doubt to where I snapped them in my previous post Day 21, Cardinals, Mallards, a duck I couldn’t identify given the low-light and brush along the river (a Wood duck maybe?), and even a fox.

Pretty sure this triplet are the same from my earlier photos. The third one is behind the tree.

The first set of deer you’ll find here were on the other side of the tracks and river laying down in the snow amidst the trees.

Do you see them?

Do you see them?

And of course I’ve run the whole winter thing into the ground I know but let me run it over a few more times. Have I mentioned before that there are winter plants to enjoy?

I believe this is a Hydrangea flower, obviously in the winter.

What do you do to keep yourself creatively active in the winter? If you’re a writer, what do you do to keep yourself inspired? How about a sketch artist, graphic artist, painter, sculptor, photographer? Fashionista?

Here are some other photographers in snowy places and some in not-so-snowy places that seem to have no trouble finding winter subjects! (Portraits of Wildflowers’ a bit spoiled being in Texas and all! ;-))

A New Day – 24 – Frosty

A New Day – 24 – Frosty

Frosty wasn’t just a snowman! Frosty doors, windows, and metal outdoors looks a lot to me like winter’s fur coat! Zooming in we can appreciate the geometric qualities and crystalline structures of nature. These are just more evidence to show that there really is a lot of inspiring things happening in our winter wonderlands.  ;-)

A New Day – 23 – Icicle Groupings

A New Day – 23

I’ve had to go backwards a little bit as I’ve taken photos but have been unable to post them. So here is my 23rd installment.

In addition to all the snow around us there’s also quite a bit of ice. Icicles have been building up along roof lines and gutters not just in rows but groups. Here’s one such example in black and white.
