How many hours a day do you write?
My writing habits are irregular. At home, I may write very little, when travelling I write a lot. At home, I like to transcribe from my journal to the computer, sharpen the story, and edit, many times over. My most creative writing happens when there is a little background chatter, or I am watching the world go by. Coffee shops, at home or abroad are great.
What is your favorite childhood book?
As a young child, I loved The Story of Babar, the Little Elephant by Jean de Brunhoff. Then there was Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery. The stories that most captivated and inspired me were the Nancy Drew Series by Carolyn Keene. Nancy was my childhood heroine.
What inspired you to write this book?
Travel, often solo travel, and the passion to explore the road less traveled inspired both of my books. In 1980 I worked in a Cambodian refugee camp as a nurse with the Red Cross, which inspired my first memoir, Encounters on the Front Line. My second memoir, A Time of Light and Shadow covers a wider terrain, the quest of a young woman, seeking her way in the world. Writing a book gives voice to the stories of my life. And every time I returned from my travels friends would say: “You should write a book.”
Five years from now, where do you see yourself as a writer?
I may write one more book. It will be creative nonfiction and knowing me, it will be set in a foreign country. I waver – do I really want to write a third book or do l listen to another voice that says ‘Yes.’ Each book has taken seven years, from inception to release, so it is a big commitment and a leap of faith.

A Time of Light and Shadow is an inspiring travel memoir that explores a young woman’s quest to live life on the front lines, chasing adventure, and confronting the harsh realities of crisis work in Asia and Africa during the 1970s. Four decades later Ella returns to India and reflects on poverty and privilege, youth and aging, longing and belonging.
What readers say:
Ella’s willingness to be touched and changed by the people she meets—both as a young woman and as an older woman is a wonderful tonic for cynicism. Reading A Time of Light and Shadowreminded me of how to walk through our beautiful, wounded world: open-eyed, open-hearted, mindful of both gifts received and debts incurred.
--Karen Connelly author of The Lizard Cage, Burmese Lessons and Touch The Dragon
A Time of Light and Shadow is a courageous story of compassion, self-discovery, and cross-cultural immersion, amidst a backdrop of some of the world’s most fascinating wonders and devastating humanitarian crises. Ella Harvey’s expansive journey seamlessly weaves the exploration of the external and internal, opening new perspective into the depths of the human spirit and what it means to live a meaningful life.
— Michael Schauch, author of A Story of Karma: Finding Love and Truth in the Lost Valley of the Himalaya
This lyrical, big-hearted book is about a woman living in the moment - whatever that particular moment is. A Time of Light and Shadow is multi-layered, combining sobering experiences of humanitarian work with wanderlust… and the vivid intensities of life on the road.
~~ Louisa Waugh, author of Hearing Birds Fly, Meet Me in Gaza, and nomadic humanitarian.

Round Robin Blog Fest June 2022

Welcome back to another Round Robin Blog Fest! These are always so much fun and interesting to learn more about our authors and their work. This month’s topic is fully loaded! We had a lot to choose from:
Have you ever included current social, political, or environmental problems in any of your stories or thought about doing so? Why or why not?
Such as:
Do you ever include politics in your stories (why and how?) Do you ever address topics like discrimination or race relations? After your characters with or against law enforcement and do you include the current climate of anti-law enforcement in your writing have you incorporated gay/lesbian characters? how does the current economic climate feature in your books? Have you ever included current wars in your books? Has terrorism ever appeared in any of your stories? Do any of your characters address going green/global warming? So interesting that’s the topic that came up this month! I’ve been tossing ideas around for my newest Glitter Bay Mystery for 2023 and adding a subplot for Quinn who is a transgender character. (She’s also one of my favorites, but don’t tell the others!) As well as being Pride Month, we have a fabulous local celebration called Celebrate Your Awesome – which is totally about being who you are!

Quinn lives that motto now and now that she’s moved to a small town and roommates with her new bestie Sage, she’s decided to challenge some of those small town beliefs. She’s started designing gowns and outfits for drag queens and is on a mission to start her own Celebrate Your Awesome, which still needs a good name. Lucky for me, I have a lot of amazing minds to pick while I work out the plot line. I’m friends with several people involved!

While I’ve generally shied away from wars and other heavy topics so far, this topic is near and dear. I’m sure there will be a little “going green” in there as well since Sage, owner of a vintage boutique called Vintage Sage, isn’t big on letting things be tossed away. Discrimination will play a role as well. Right now, Book 3 is in the planning phase while I finish off another book for October – Dead Man’s Doll will be out this fall! – but I have ideas galore for Sage, Quinn, and Laken in Glitter Bay including researching a famous Marilyn Monroe gown and an elderly drag queen, among other things.
In my Sugarwood Mysteries, the topic of land use and environment always seem to come up. Audra's husband Rex works for a development company that is focused on buying up most of Sugarwood and area to build new homes. Not totally a bad thing, except when bodies start to pop up. Currently, I'm working on Book 2 and brought in a few new characters and reveal a few new secrets. Complete with new book covers for both books. I can't wait.

Daughter of Hades by Mack Little Shortlisted for 2022 Hawthorne Prize!

Daughter Of Hades
Telling the Complicated History of the Caribbean Through the Eyes Of Two Sets of Siblings
NOW SHORTLISTED FOR THE 2022 HAWTHORNE PRIZE!!!
Released and published by Inklings Publishing
The book is available worldwide in e-format

Mack Little’s sophomore novel traces the fascinating and often painful Caribbean history through the life experience of siblings as they try to escape their homes and strive for a better life.

Daughter of Hades first depicts the story of Dinny and Jimmie, twin brother and sister who have grown up as enslaved people on a plantation in Barbados. When Dinny’s life faces more threats as the master’s infatuation with her grows, the siblings make their way onto a pirate ship. Though safety will not come yet for the two siblings, it seems that love is in the cards for at least one of them, as Dinny falls in love with a Chinese sailor named Lei.
The storyline alternates with another set of siblings: two brothers named Ivan and Pax as they desperately try to make their way to Jamaica. The two storylines eventually clash and the two sets of siblings are faced with a Rolodex of suspenseful events that bring to light pain, romance, and survival, in any condition.
The book gets its inspiration from the long and harrowing history of slavery in the Caribbean. It is one of the most exciting historical fiction novels with a story that is still relevant today.
But Daughters of Hades is much more than a lesson of Caribbean history and the effects slavery has on these siblings. At its core, it is a fight for survival and revenge captured in its more pure state, and a historical romance that shows people can find love even in the strangest of places, or the strangest of situations.
“An engaging, swashbuckling tale of love and revenge during the age of piracy.” - Kirkus Reviews
“Little fills us in on the important Caribbean history and how the rules of a terrible trade system changed from one island to another. Envisioning the beautiful settings of Jamaica and Barbados and recognizing their histories illuminates a truth that readers will really benefit from knowing.” - Jaylynn Korrell (Independent Book Review)
About Mack:

Mack Little grew up in the Deep South and has accumulated a vibrant experience which she often emulates in her storytelling. Her studies in International Politics and service in the Army have given her impressive perspectives to bring to her novels new layers of intrigues and twists, which are all quite prevalent in her latest novel, Daughter of Hades.

Introducing Natasha Deen's new YA Novel The Signs and Wonders of Tuna Rashad

The Signs and Wonders of Tuna Rashad
The Newest YA Novel from Award-Winning #Own Voices Author
Natasha Deen
The book will be available by Hachette Books on June 7th across all platforms!

From award-winning, #OwnVoices author Natasha Deen comes a new funny, honest, YA novel following one girl as she tries to win over her crush before she leaves for college.
Let’s be clear. No matter what her older brother, Robby, says, aspiring screenwriter Tuna Rashad is not “stupidstitious.” She is, however, cool with her Caribbean heritage, which means she is always on the lookout for messages from loved ones who have passed on. But ever since Robby became a widower, all he does is hang out at the house, mock Tuna for following in their ancestors’ traditions, and meddle in her life.
Tuna needs to break free from her brother’s loving but over-bearing ways and get him a life (or at least, get him out of hers!). Based on the signs, her ancestors are on board. They also seem to be on board with helping Tuna win over her crush, Tristan Dangerfield. The only hiccup? She has to do it before leaving for college in the fall. A ticking clock, a grief-stricken brother, and a crush who doesn’t believe in signs. What could possibly go wrong?

OTHER WORKS BY NATASHA DEEN:

A Guyanese girl must find the balance between her parents' "old world" expectations and traditions while pursuing her dream of being a great trumpeter in this contemporary, coming-of-age story.
Nira Ghani has always dreamed of becoming a musician. Her Guyanese parents, however, have big plans for her to become a scientist or doctor. Nira's grandmother and her best friend, Emily, are the only people who seem to truly understand her desire to establish an identity outside of the one imposed on Nira by her parents. When auditions for jazz band are announced, Nira realizes it's now or never to convince her parents that she deserves a chance to pursue her passion.
As if fighting with her parents weren't bad enough, Nira finds herself navigating a new friendship dynamic when her crush, Noah, and notorious mean-girl, McKenzie "Mac," take a sudden interest in her and Emily, inserting themselves into the fold. So, too, does Nira's much cooler (and very competitive) cousin Farah. Is she trying to wiggle her way into the new group to get closer to Noah? Is McKenzie trying to steal Emily's attention away from her? As Farah and Noah grow closer and Emily begins to pull away, Nira's trusted trumpet "George" remains her constant, offering her an escape from family and school drama.
But it isn't until Nira takes a step back that she realizes she's not the only one struggling to find her place in the world. As painful truths about her family are revealed, Nira learns to accept people for who they are and to open herself in ways she never thought possible.

STAY, a middle-grade novel-in-verse by Katherine Lawrence now available from Shadowpaw Press

Award-winning middle-grade novel-in-verse by acclaimed Saskatoon poet
Katherine Lawrence now available in new edition from Shadowpaw Press

Stay, an award-winning middle-grade novel-in-verse by acclaimed Saskatoon poet Katherine Lawrence, orphaned by the demise of Coteau Books in 2020, is now back in print in a new edition from Regina’s Shadowpaw Press.
Stay is being released under the company’s Reprise imprint, which focuses on producing new editions of notable, previously published work, won the 2017 Moonbeam Award for Children’s Poetry (Gold) and was a finalist for both the Poetry Award and the Children’s Literature Award in the 2018 Saskatchewan Book Awards.
“I’m thrilled to know that Stay has been given a second life,” Lawrence said. “This story of a twelve-year-old girl who navigates a world made complex by family breakdown is one that kids everywhere can relate to.”
“I was captivated by Staythe moment I read it,” said Edward Willett, editor and publisher of Shadowpaw Press. “I’m excited to be able to give it new life for new readers.”
Stay can be bought directly from the publisher or from most online bookstores in both ebook and print and can also be ordered through any brick-and-mortar bookstore. This handy URL provides links to multiple online sources: https://books2read.com/KatherineLawrenceStay.
More about the book
Millie is eleven going on twelve when her life is upended by her parents’ decision to separate. Her mother gets a new boyfriend, and her father moves into a new place: an apartment with a big sign on the door that says NO DOGS ALLOWED. Since there’s nothing Millie wants more than a dog of her own, that seems like the biggest blow of all.
Hoping to get her parents back together—not just for her sake, but for the sake of her future dog—Millie is elated when her father moves back in after a short while. She can’t understand why her parents aren’t happy at the reconciliation until she learns the truth: her father is back because he has been diagnosed with cancer.
Told in verse by acclaimed Canadian poet Katherine Lawrence, Stay is a moving, touching, and yet often humorous portrait of a family in a time of crisis, whose pain is filtered through the thoughts and actions of an eleven-year-old girl. Staycaptures the essence of what it means to grow up, confront your fears, support your family, and share in the wild optimism that only youth can harbour.
Praise for Stay
“At first glance, Stayappears to be modest in length, form, and story. But within the spare pages of this middle-grade novel-in-verse is a powerful narrative about a family in transition and the young girl at its centre who needs to form something new and whole from what remains. . . Stay might be a quick read, but it’s a book that should be savoured.” – Quill & Quire (starred review)
“While a child can teach a dog to ‘Stay,’ a child cannot cause parents to stay together. This free-verse novel is a powerful portrayal of a nuclear family that is coming apart . . . Highly Recommended.” – Canadian Review of Materials
“Stay is brilliantly written; each word serves its purpose and powerfully paints the characters. The format is wonderfully unique. It manages to be both accessible to children and lyrically sophisticated at the same time. Heavy subject matter is treated with a deft hand.” – Judges, Children’s Literature Award, 2018 Saskatchewan Book Awards
“Katherine Lawrence’s middle-grade novel-in-verse, Stay, evokes the changeable emotions of eleven-year-olds and the enduring truths of community. Here is a world of families in transition, poor puppy training, and the possibility of discovering something new within the tatters of the old. Filled with charm and world play, Stay is a hopeful response to our modern struggles . . . It’s everyday magic—stirred up, made bright.” – Judges, Saskatchewan Arts Board Poetry Award, 2018 Saskatchewan Book Awards

Announcing Charlotte Gray, the second book in the Those Regency Belles series by Vicki Chatham

Welcome to fellow BWL Publishing mystery and romance author, Vicki Chatham!

Victoria Chatham’s tag line History, Mystery, and Love says it all. She is a history buff, especially of the Regency era, adds a little mystery into her novels and seals them with a loving happy ever after ending. She meets with her writing buddies as often as possible but when not writing enjoys the great outdoors, especially if it includes playing around with dogs or horses. She lives near Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Tell us about your life outside of writing.
I retired from the workforce several years ago and appreciate the freedom from having to get up to the sound of an alarm clock. I love dogs, and because it was no longer practical to have my own, I started house and pet sitting. I have several clients and care for various dogs, from an elderly and quite grumpy Yorkshire terrier to a young mixed breed with bags of energy. I can write wherever I go once I have the dogs’ routines figured out, but do not take my laptop on holiday with me. That is nearly a complete break, although I often use the places I’ve visited for settings in my books. I take loads of photos, too, although I’m more of a point-and-shoot kind of gal rather than a real photographer. I enjoy the movies, too, and am just beginning to feel comfortable going to the cinema again rather than watching them on Netflix. I’m also thinking of trying my hand at mixed media art, but I will save that for a winter project.
Do you have a work in progress?
Not yet, although it is in the works. It will be a contemporary western romance I’ve been toying with for the last six months. Although most of my books are historical romances or historical fiction, I like being able to switch genres. When I wrote the first contemporary, I mistakenly thought I wouldn’t need to do so much research, but that didn’t happen. I found I needed to do almost as much to write accurately about steer wrestling and ranch life, about which I knew very little. No one has called me out on it, so I guess I got it right.
What was the most difficult section/piece you ever wrote? What made it difficult?
That had to be Charlotte Gray, the second book in my series Those Regency Belles. It may seem odd to non-writers when they hear writers talk about fighting with their characters, but Charlotte did not want the story or the life I planned for her. In the original plot, Charlotte was an orphan who, like so many young ladies of that era, had no future other than getting married, becoming a governess or lady’s companion, and going into prostitution or the workhouse. Original Charlotte became a lady’s companion and lived a quiet life in the country, mooning after her employer’s nephew each time he visited. Charlotte wanted more, so I gave it to her. Not only did she have the action she demanded but landed herself a dashing hero.
What sort of research do you do for your work?
I read a lot. I also watch movies and YouTube, which is a fantastic resource. Wanting to know what life on a ship would have been like for passengers, I watched To the Ends of the Earth, a three-part BBC TV miniseries starring Benedict Cumberbatch about a voyage to Australia in 1812. I also appreciate virtual tours of the great houses of England, frequently stopping the video to catch details that may or may not finish up in my narrative. I use Mr. Google, but that is usually a starting point, not the be-all and end-all. As a tactile person, I like to see and hear things for myself whenever I can. One of my most poignant moments came at the Imperial War Museum in London, England, reading an actual letter from a soldier in France during WW1 while researching my book Shell Shocked.
Which books and authors do you read for pleasure? Is there an author who inspires you?
Georgette Heyer was my inspiration to write Regency romance, but I later enjoyed Mary Balogh’s Regency romances just as much. Although I read a lot in my genre, I also thoroughly enjoy a good thriller. I’ve been a Jack Reacher fan for years and have recently started reading the Longmire books as I enjoyed the TV series so much. Anthony Horowitz is another author I enjoy reading. He also wrote the TV series Foyle’s War and contributed scripts to the Poirot and Midsomer Murders TV series.
Was there a person who encouraged you to write?
That would be my late husband, bless him. My family never saw my writing as a serious career, rather a little hobby, although I think they are proud of my achievements now. When I started talking about how much I wanted to write and would when I retired, Nitch (a nickname—only his family called him Neil) signed me up for short story writing classes and then entered me in a short story competition in which I placed fourth and won $100. He did the shopping, cooking, and cleaning so that I could write. His only reward, he said, was to have a red Ferrari and an eighteen-year-old blonde chauffeur when I made it to the New York Times bestseller list, which hasn’t happened yet. I agreed to the car but not the chauffeur. Can you imagine what the insurance would have been? He’s been gone twenty-one years now. During that time, my writing tribe has gone on to support and encourage me every step of the way.

Charlotte Gray discovers her home ransacked, her father missing, and a dark and dangerous stranger, Benjamin Abernathy, waiting for her. He had promised to take care of his friend’s daughter if anything befell him and must now follow through with that promise.
With no other options, and despite her misgivings, Charlotte becomes established in the stranger’s home as governess to his nephew and niece. Benjamin doubts her ability to cope with the two young hellions but is quickly reassured as he recognizes the sharp mind behind her blue eyes. But is it Charlotte’s mind he falls in love with, or her delectable body?
Charlotte is hunted for the knowledge she is suspected of possessing and Benjamin for the threat he presents. Will the smugglers and spies behind the threat have any chance against this duo who will go to any lengths to protect the secrets they each must keep?

“I am thrilled that Shadowpaw Press has given my book a new life and audience,” Anderson said. “It has been great working with someone passionate about books and who wants to put them in readers’ hands.”
“Duatero is a powerful work of science fiction that confronts issues of morality and survival head-on in a carefully thought-out and terrifying alien world,” said Edward Willett, editor and publisher of Shadowpaw Press. “It deserves to find many new readers, and I’m thrilled to be able to give it that opportunity.”

More about the book
Majstro Falchilo Kredo has devoted his life to protecting the abandoned Earth colony of Duatero from Malamiko, the indigenous ecosystem that makes their crops fail and whose contamination turns humans into mindless monsters.
But Malimiko is changing, becoming more dangerous, more aware, even as the ancient technology the humans use to combat it fails piece by precious piece. Kredo and his fellow soldiers must risk everything or see all they hold precious wiped away and forgotten.
Kredo is prepared to sacrifice himself—and anyone around him—to do his duty. But what if the price demanded is even higher?
Praise for Duatero
“Combines power armoured soldiers from the pages of sci-fi pulps, a world as intriguing yet bleak as Mid-World from Stephen King’s Dark Tower, and an evil as terrifying and paranoia-inducing as John Carpenter’s The Thing. A descent into the darkness of a failing world and the brutal zealotry of its defenders.” - Matt Moore, Aurora Award-winning author of It’s Not the End and Other Lies
About the Author
Brad C. Anderson lives with his wife and puppy in Vancouver, Canada. He teaches undergraduate business courses at a local university and researches organizational wisdom in blithe defiance of the fact most people do not think you can put those two words in the same sentence without irony. Previously, he worked in the biotech sector, where he made drugs for a living (legally!). His stories have appeared in a variety of publications. His short story “Naïve Gods” was longlisted for a 2017 Sunburst Award for Excellence in Canadian Literature of the Fantastic. DEATH’S INTERN
The Debut Novel in the Intern Diaries Series by USA Today Best-selling author, DC Gomez
Released by Gomez Expeditions
The book is available worldwide in digital and print format
A talking cat, a boy genius, missing people, and an untrained Intern for Death. What could possibly go wrong?
Did that really happen?
There’s no way Death offered me a job. I’m a musician that makes her living as a waitress, with absolutely no training in the supernatural world. This is all a very bad dream.
But Bob has been kidnapped, and I can’t possibly lose the only friend I have.
Bob, you’d better be alive. Because if I just gave my soul to Death for nothing, I will personally kill you. Not to mention, it seems Death’s Interns have fairly short life expectancies.
God, don’t let me die.
