Secrets Bahia Mita: A Blissful Escape in Riviera Nayarit

Nestled between the lush Sierra Madre Mountains and the sparkling Pacific Ocean, Secrets Bahia Mita offers a harmonious blend of relaxation, fun, and connection. A direct flight from Los Angeles to Puerto Vallarta made getting here a breeze, setting the stage for an extraordinary escape into Unlimited Luxury.
A Grand Arrival and Sky-High CabanasFrom the moment we arrived, the team at Secrets Bahia Mita made us feel welcome. Our Sky Bar cabana days were a highlight, offering plush loungers, soft gray towels, white umbrellas, and thoughtful touches like eucalyptus-infused cold towels and refreshing pineapple skewers. Regina, our concierge, added a surprising touch of care by cleaning our glassesan unexpected but delightful detail.
The service was impeccable, with Angelo, Efrain, Julio, Martinez, Asael, and Regina ensuring that every moment was flawless. Drinks arrived promptly, surprises like Oreo ice cream sandwiches appeared throughout the day, and a birthday cake with singing staff turned Heathers celebration into a moment to remember. Add the sight of whales breaching and dolphins dancing in the ocean, and the Sky Bar became our personal slice of paradise.

Our stay in the massive 1,000-square-foot Aspire Suite was an experience in itself. This luxurious space featured a large living room with a cozy L-shaped sofa bed, a dining table, a wine fridge, and two expansive balconies. The plunge pool was perfect for cooling off, while the freestanding tub offered serene moments of relaxation. The king-sized bed, premium amenities, and breathtaking views made it a haven of comfort and style.
Dining DelightsEvery meal at Secrets Bahia Mita was a culinary masterpiece. Breakfast at Market Caf felt more like a feast than a buffet, with fresh Montreal bagels, savory crepas, custom-made eggs, and chilaquiles stealing the show. The mimosas upon entry and the staffs attentiveness to allergies elevated the experience even further.
Lunches and dinners were equally memorable. At the Sky Bar, we enjoyed a mix of casual bites and gourmet dishes, while the Bluewater Grill served perfect steaks under the stars. Kudos to Martin at Olios and the chefs for their exceptional cuisine and attention to detail.
Hula Hoops, Laughter, and ConnectionI brought my hula hoop along, and it became a source of joy and connection. Everyone joined inHeather, Angelo, Regina, and Efrain showed off their skills as we hooped by the pool, on our balcony, and even at sunset. The hoop brought laughter, smiles, and a reminder to embrace fun and spontaneity.

Secrets Bahia Mita excelled in anticipating every need. From the luxurious cabanas to the attentive staff, every detail was curated for comfort. We were pampered with ice-cold eucalyptus towels, veggie sticks, and refreshing drinks throughout the day. And nature added its own magic, with stunning views of whales and dolphins set to a backdrop of vibrant skies and great music.

Special thanks to Cece and Frida for all their help and the property tour and Jose from Beach Club who didnt give us directions but actually walked us back to the elevator and got us going to the right place.

iHeart Radio: What’s Going On & BRAVE-ish

I was thrilled to be invited to join Loraine Ballard Morrill on her iHeartRadio show, where she generously called me a “travel guru” during our conversation about my memoir, Brave-ish: One Breakup, Six Continents, and Feeling Fearless After Fifty. Loraine, who describes herself as travel-phobic, and I dove into a lively discussion about how even the most hesitant travelers can embrace their own version of bravery.
Being brave-ish doesnt mean having no fearits about finding the courage to take the first step outside your comfort zone. We talked about the transformative power of travel and how small moments of bravery, like trying something new or stepping into the unknown, can open up a world of possibilities.
Loraines dedication to empowering her community through media resonates deeply with my belief in the connections and growth that come from adventure. Together, we explored how everyone, no matter where they are on their journey, can channel their inner travel guru and discover a braver, more adventurous version of themselves.
What’s Going On: Lisa Niver, Travel ExpertAugust 3, 2024 28 mins
Loraine: To say that Im travel phobic might be going too far but its true that I havent scheduled a real vacation since my mini honeymoon almost four years ago Well Im taking the plunge and going abroad for a whole week I speak to Travel guru, Lisa Niver, who iscelebrated for inspiring others to seek out new experiences and embrace the transformative power of travel.
LISTEN starting at 17:24 to hear Loraine and Lisa:
Loraine Ballard Morrill(00:00):
Good morning, and welcome to What’s going on? A show
about making a difference in our lives and our communities.
I’m Lorraine Ballad Marl. To say that I’m travel phobic
might be going a little too far, but it is
true that I haven’t scheduled a real vacation since my
mini honeymoon almost four years ago. Well, I’m taking the
plunge and going abroad for a whole week.
I speak to travel guru Lisa Niver, who believes traveling abroad is
not only about going places, but can also be a
tremendous tool for personal growth.
Loraine(17:24):
You’re listening to What’s Going On. I am now going
to reveal something very personal about myself, and that is
that I have a fear of traveling. Now, this fear
of traveling has kept me from doing the kind of
traveling that I’ve always wanted to do. But I broke
that terrible habit of mine of avoiding travel and I
actually booked a vacation to Spain. And so it’s so
appropriate that today I’m going to be speaking with a
world traveler. Her name is Lisa Niver. She has written
a memoir called Brave-ish :One Breakup, Six Continents and Feeling
Fearless after Fifty I can so identify with that. And
also she is the host of an award winning podcast
called Make your Own Map.
Well, Lisa, boy, this is
really on time because I literally pushed the button to
click and make it all happen last week. So Brave-ish,
I guess I feel like I am a little bit brave-ish,
but you, in fact are an award winning travel expert
and author and adventurer, and you wrote a book that
has a title that I totally identify with. So tell
us more about how this came to be.

LISA(18:29):
Thank you so much. I’m so honored to be here speaking with you, and
I am really so thrilled for you that you’re going
to Spain. You’re going to have the best time.
I get a lot of pushback on the title, Brave-ish, that
my best friend and my mom say that I am not brave-ish,
I am very brave.
I think the title really speaks to more
people since we all have fears. Most of us want
something –like you always wanted to travel more, maybe someone
wants to change their job. And I think brave-ish really
invites people to try something new. It’s often hard
(19:06):
as adults to do something new and not feel competent.
We’re not used to feeling uncertain. Will
I be able to read the signs to find my train in Madrid?
Will I get in the right airport line? Will
I make it? And that fear keeps us from doing stuff,
And for myself, when I was getting divorced and starting
my life again. I felt so ashamed and embarrassed. It
(19:29):
was so traumatic. And that’s how I started doing these challenges,
which is the bulk of the book. I did fifty
dares before I turned fifty.
Loraine(19:37):
Wow. Well, you know that’s the thing that sometimes we
get stuck in a rut. We’re used to our routine.
For me, I have a job that I love. I
could work till I drop. But I have
come to realize that there is more to life than work.
As much as I love my work, and the travel
(19:57):
is a very unique way of taking yourself out of
your comfort zone right and opening up a possibility that
perhaps you weren’t aware of before.
Tell us what it
is about travel and putting yourself in these situations that
are so unfamiliar that can really open up your heart
and your soul and your life.
LISA (20:18):
For me, being in a new place,
you have the opportunity to reimagine yourself. When
you go to the same coffee shop and you go
to the same restaurant, and you do the same thing
all the time, you often act the same way.
When I was getting divorced, someone said
to me, you can’t do something new in an old way,
and it gives you the opportunity to stretch, even if
(20:41):
you aren’t ready to go to another continent like you
are go to Spain. If you commute home and you drive on a
different street, it can make a difference to your brain
that you’re doing something new and you might find out
(21:02):
that one street over from the way you normally go.
Or if you’re on the subway and you get off
one stop earlier and walk around and go to a
different restaurant, who knows.
(21:11):
You might sit next to someone new who becomes a
new friend, or you might try
a food you never tried.
(21:15):
You might go to a Vietnamese restaurant and decide, oh,
my gosh, I’m going to go to Vietnam. It
gives you the opportunity to reconfigure your brain and your
neurons and your ideas.
The other
thing I always tell people is you don’t have to
get on a plane to have an adventure. You can have an
adventure in your home city.
I always recommend people take a cooking class.
It’s very low entry to trying something new, especially if you love
Italian food, take Italian class, or you
love sushi, take a sushi rolling class.
(21:43):
They’re not that expensive.
You get to eat, and generally you meet people.
Everybody’s having fun and talking
and it’s something everybody, for
the most part is pretty good at. Everybody eats.
Loraine(21:55):
So it has been proven from a research standpoint that
doing something new, whether it’s every day or every week
or once a year or whatever, whatever it is that
you decide to do that’s new that you’ve never done before,
does open up your neural pathways and they allow you
to think differently and to open up your idea of
(22:17):
what is possible. I remember reading about Shonda Rhimes and
she wrote this wonderful book called The Year of Saying Yes.
And she is someone who, believe it or not, is
very shy, and I can say that for me too,
that I’m a little bit on the shy side. But
I find that when I decide to say yes for
things that scare me to death, like going to Spain,
(22:37):
for instance, that a whole bunch of things open up.
And it is really about opening up your life to possibility.
Lisa(22:45):
I love that you brought up her book because that book,
The Year of Yes is one of the reasons that
I did my project. I didn’t think I could do it.
And so that book and then your friend LuAnn
Cahn’s book, I Dare Me. She did 365 things, helped me
consider doing fifty things, I thought
I can’t do fifty. I can’t do fifty.
And my friend told me, it’s only one
a week, and Luanne did one every day.
Loraine(23:12):
She did. I did some of those with her. Let
me ask you this. So, having done what you’ve done,
maybe it wasn’t every day, but you did travel to
one hundred countries, and you’ve done a lot
of things that perhaps you hadn’t thought of doing before
you embarked on this journey. What has it done for you?
How has it changed you?
Lisa(23:33):
The most incredible thing is it really did
change me. One of the things I noticed doing the fifty things,
but much more I noticed writing the book about doing
the fifty things was that initially, no matter what the
challenge was, I said, no, someone would recommend something and
I said absolutely, not. I’m scared. I don’t like it.
I am afraid. Bad things happen to me. No.
And
then most of the time someone would say, “Isn’t that
the whole point of your project?”
And I said, please,
don’t use my words against me. But as I got
towards the end, and certainly after the whole fifty things process,
(24:16):
someone recommended something to me and I didn’t hesitate. I
thought I definitely want to do that.
And they’re said you’re so brave.
and I thought about it.
Normally in my life, I’ve been very hesitant
about things that seem different or challenging. It’s funny.
I’m a travel writer, I’m a
travel expert. I’m on TV about travel, but a lot
of times I get nervous! Am I going to
miss my plane? Did I pack the right things?
People think that just because you’re good
at doing something means
it never bothers you. But I think that’s really a
mistake that it keeps people from doing what other people
are doing. They worry that someone else is better at it.
Who cares — be bad at it? Take an extra suitcase?
What’s going to happen.
Loraine(24:57):
Life has certainly opened up for you. Now
you have this podcast that’s award-winning,
You’ve been on television.
You are a storyteller, and you’ve been able to share
your journey and to inspire others. How do people find
out more about what you do? Get a copy of
the book, find out about your podcast, tell us all
about that.
Lisa(25:19):
Thank you so much.
One way people find me is all across social media.
Find me at @LisaNiver (Niver like Diver)
and the book is available online and at all bookstores.
I just had an
event at the Barnes and Noble at the Grove in Los Angeles.
I’ve had an event in Philadelphia at the Penn Bookstore.
I always recommend to people go into your local bookstore and
ask them to order the book if they don’t have it.
It’s available through Simon and Schuster, and
any bookstore can order it.
It’s always good to support your local bookstore, but you
can find my book, BRAVE-ish, at Barnes and Noble, Amazon, Walmart, Target.
My podcast is called: “Make your own map.”
You can find it on Spotify, Apple, Amazon, iHeart,
or wherever you find podcasts.

Loraine(26:26):
I love it. I’ll be checking that out as I
embark on my very scary but very exciting trip to
Spain in a couple of weeks and looking forward to it.
You inspired me. Sometimes you
just have to go for it. You have to step
out on thin air and see what happens, and sometimes
something magical happens.
Lisa(26:50):
I think magical things will happen for you. And I
also think we need to normalize that being afraid or
being concerned is information and we need to look at
that information and decide how are we going to respond
to it. So, for myself, when I’m traveling
If I’m going to get in late the first night,
I make sure I know how am I going to
travel from the airport to the hotel. Do they have
a car service? Sometimes I change my flight so I
arrive when it’s daylight because that makes me feel less nervous.
Those are the things that can
really make a difference. A friend of mine doesn’t necessarily want to go
out at night alone. So she books a tour. She’ll book a food tour or a
city tour at night, and then she’s not alone. And
I thought that was really bright.
Loraine(27:44):
I love that. All right, I’m taking all of those
suggestions and incorporating them into my trip to Spain. Lisa,
I am so delighted to speak with you.

Ruby Princess: California Coastal Cruise San Francisco and Santa Barbara

Embarking on a California Coastal Cruise aboard the Ruby Princess was both a heartwarming reunion and an exhilarating new adventure. Returning to Princess Cruises, where I loved working, brought back cherished memories, but this time, I was a guest having a reunion with friends who are like family. From the unforgettable moment of sailing under San Franciscos Golden Gate Bridge to the coastal charm of Santa Barbara, every experience felt like a celebration of exploration and connection.

San Francisco set the tone for the journey with its vibrant energy and iconic landmarks. While in San Francisco, I stayed at the eclectic Hotel Emblem, a boutique retreat brimming with literary-inspired decor and creative energya perfect base for exploring the citys iconic sites. We also enjoyed the lively ambiance at PLS bar in Hotel Zeppelin before heading to the legendary Tonga Room at the Fairmont San Francisco to reunite over mai tais and live music. The citys cultural gems lured me in, leading to visits with CityPASS to three remarkable museums showcasing art, history, and innovation.

Santa Barbara offered a serene escape, with outdoor adventures that showcased the natural beauty of Californias coastline. Kayaking with Santa Barbara Adventure Company in the harbor we saw sea lions and graceful egrets, while at Santa Barbara Glassblowing Studio with third generation glass artist, Saul, Mia and I made our very own glass vases.

Onboard the Ruby Princess, the celebrations continued. From festive evenings to elegant dinners and serene balcony sunrises, this cruise was a perfect balance of luxury, adventure, and meaningful connections. See PART TWO for the rest of our ports including Los Angeles, Ensenada and Halloween celebrations!

Leaving SFO for LAX, I found myself reminiscing about my incredible California coastal cruise aboard the Ruby Princess. Just as I treasure the views from a window seat on a flight, I cherished every moment on my balcony at sea. From breathtaking sunrises to the soothing sound of the waves, it was the perfect vantage point to soak in the beauty of the coastwhether in the sky or on the water. Thanks Delta for the safe flight and Princess Cruises for my wonderful cruise!
I had an incredible time revisiting San FranciscoI had an incredible time revisiting San Francisco, a city I used to call home! Using a CityPASS made it so easy to rediscover some of my favorite spots and explore new ones. I loved watching the iconic cable cars climb the steep streets, and the Exploratoriums interactive exhibits were just as fascinating as I remembered. Walking along the waterfront, feeling the salty breeze and soaking in the stunning views of the bay, was pure joy. From the panoramic sights of Coit Tower to the lively energy of Pier 39, it felt amazing to be back. Would you ride on the SkyStar Ferris Wheel ? I couldnt leave without indulging in some Ghirardelli chocolate. San Francisco, youll always have part of my heart!
Visiting the California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate ParkVisiting the California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park was an unforgettable adventure! Claude, the giant albino alligator, was fascinating to see, and the towering giraffe skeleton left me in awe. The rooftop garden offered peaceful views of the park, a perfect retreat above the hustle and bustle. The earthquake simulation was both thrilling and deeply personalit brought back memories of living in San Francisco during the October 17, 1989, quake. It served as a powerful reminder of how life can change in an instant, much like an earthquake. The Steinhart Aquarium was mesmerizing, with its vibrant marine life and the unique experience of hearing scuba divers give a live talk from inside the tank. At the entrance, we marveled at the stingrays gliding gracefully through the water, including the stunning southern stingrays with their electric blue spots. The exhibits showcasing ecosystems from around the world were breathtakingI admired the lions in the African savannah display, which reminded me of seeing them during my African safari. I also smiled watching the live penguins swimming playfully, thinking of the time I swam with penguins in the Galpagos. Extraordinary Traveler’s Club Profile: Lisa Niver

November 2024

Q: How old were you when you began to dream of and imagine extraordinary adventures?
LN:When I was twelve, my mom tucked a book about Darwins adventures in the Galapagos inside my trunk for summer camp. All summer I imagined him discovering new species. In 2019, I finally saw the blue-footed boobies with my own eyes when I sailed with EcoVentura Galapagos. I was thrilled to also see red-footed boobies and theNazca boobies with their gray-feet and orange beaks.
Q: What is one of the more extraordinary travel experiences that you have had?
LN:One of the best adventures I ever had was an 11-day journey by van in Mongolia. When we booked it inUlaanbaatar after traveling for two days overland from China by overnight bus and train, I was told we were going to the vast expanse of nothingness. I asked, How will I know when I get there? They said, You will know. By the middle of the first day, we were long gone from roads of any kind, electricity andanything resembling civilization. I loved every minute of the trip but especially walking up the dunes of the Gobi desert and finding a few small purple flowers. It is amazing to find life and beauty in the most seemingly desolate places.

Q: Have you had a close call while traveling, and if so, did it motivate a re-assessment or change in behavior?
LN: After working on board cruise ships for seven years and backpacking in Asia for three, I have had many close calls while traveling. A few memorable ones were being in a hurricane during my contract on Rhapsody of the Seas and the solution was to head to Trinidad and Tobago which was not one of our ports that season. The crew were thrilled for somewhere new! When I was on safari in Tanzania with Abercrombie and Kent and Sanctuary Retreats, which was the 100th country I visited, our jeep was stopped near several elephants. Somehow oddly when I changed the battery in my camera, the SD card with all my photos jumped out of the camera and onto the ground next to our vehicle. I started to get out to pick it up. My guide said very calmly and extremely seriously, Lisa, sit down NOW. When it is safe, I will retrieve it.Mostly I have learned that when you are traveling, you need to always pack your common sense. Planes will be late or get canceled. Sometimes the food wont be so great. When I was in Kathmandu, they only had power 12 hours a day so we made sure to have flashlights and candles. Once when I was teaching science at Brawerman Elementary School in Los Angeles, the power went out. My students and I opened the blinds and eventually the lights came back on. I have learned that when you travel you always need to use the F word which of course is FLEXIBLE!

Q. Who are extraordinary travelers whom you admire? If you could sit down and speak with any extraordinary traveler, living or dead, who would it be?
LN:I have been so fortunate to meet and travel with some of the most incredible travelers. Without the care and mentorship of some of the travel greats, I would not have a travel book or a vibrant travel YouTube channel.Lisa Napoli, author ofRadio Shangri-la: What I Learned in Bhutan, the Happiest Kingdom on Earth, introduced me to Richard Bangs who agreed to be the key note speaker for the Los Angeles 2011Meet Plan Go event. When I emailed Richard that I was starting a travel writing competition on my site, We Said Go Travel, he said, I will be the judge!
I published over 2500 writers from 75 countries across 13 competitions. Having a famous judge gave my brand new contest credibility! Richard has always offered me opportunities including bringing me as co-host for his Orbitz Web series Quest for Adventure to both Puerto Rico and Bermuda!
Patricia Schultz has also been an amazing mentor to me and because of her I have spoken many times at the Travel and Adventure Shows across the USA in New York City, Dallas, Chicago and Los Angeles. I first met her with Richard Bangs in Los Angeles at a JNTO event.

Photo: Lisa Niver with Patricia Schultz, Richard Bangs and Andy Bender, 2016.
Q: As a veteran explorer and extraordinary traveler, any advice for a young traveler just setting out?
LN: When people ask me about starting a blog or becoming a travel writer, my advice is:
You can have an adventure in your own backyard.
You do not have to travel far to find something new to do. Drive home from work on a different street. It is good for your brain and you might discover a new restaurant that has Thai food and after you try a new dish, you think about traveling there or studying a language at a local college or on a free app. Follow your interests.
Small steps lead to BIG changes.
You do not need to book an around the world flight for 6 months to get started. One year, I decided I would go to one museum a month in Los Angeles. I go to museums when I travel to new places but do not always make it a priority at home. It was the best choice. I planned in advance. I searched for the best exhibits. I learned which ones had a free once a month on Saturday or were open late nights on Thursday. It led to so many great opportunities. Start small.
Start for FREE.
People often tell me they are going to buy hosting and pay for a logo and one million other costs to get started for their book/blog/trip. I started We Said Go Travel for free on blogger. When you write more, you can change the url, buy hosting, get a logo. In the beginning, the most important thing is to just START and be consistent.
Remember, Fall down 7, Get up 8!For the first 100 who use the coupon, Lisa offers a gift of a complimentary class on UDEMY called Travel Writer 101. Here is the coupon

More about TRAVEL WRITER 101 andplease contact Lisa on social media if you have questions about her class, book, podcast or if you need another complimentary link for my class.

Lisa’s charming and heartfelt adventures will captivate and inspire.
What reviewers say:
This was an inspirational memoir of a woman’s journey from a very low place in her life to finding her own inner strength and going on the most amazing adventures. It is easy to lose our way and as she points out is never too late to re-center ourselves. I really admire her strength, determination and grit. It also shows that even the strongest have self crippling doubt that can prevent us from living our best lives. Liz Taylor

Reader’s Digest: “This Is the Airline Most Likely to Bump You”

A new study reveals which carriers are most likely to deny boarding. From the worst offenders to the most reliable airlines, here’s what to knowand what to do if you find yourself bumped.
Picture this: Youve made it to the airport on time, and just as youre envisioning a smooth trip to a vacation paradise, you hear the dreaded announcement. This flight is overbooked. Ah, the joys of air travel!
Youve been there. And as a longtime travel journalist who actually just disembarked a plane, Ive been there. Anyone who travels often has experienced airline annoyances. Theyre hard to avoid, but thanks to a new study from Upgraded Points, we know which airlines are most likely to bump passengers. I talked to Upgraded Points Editor-in-Chief Keri Stooksbury and pored over the study to find out which airlines are guilty of regularly denying passengers boarding.
Read on to learn about the worst offender, find out how other airlines stack up and get travel advice thatll come in handy the next time youre bumped from a flight.
How did the study determine which airlines regularly bump passengers?According to Stooksbury, the travel experts at Upgraded Points analyzed quarterly data from the U.S. Department of Transportation, which tracks how often airlines deny passengers boarding due to overbooking. They focused on denied boardings due to oversales from the first quarter of 2023 to the second quarter 2024.
From there, they determined the average number of people (per 10,000 passengers) who were involuntarily denied boarding or voluntarily gave up their seats on 10 major airlines. All that number-crunching narrowed down the airlines most likely to bump you from a flight.
Upgraded Points also conducted a nationwide survey asking Americans about their feelings regarding airline bumps and how much theyd expect to be compensated if they were denied boarding on a flight.

Airlines count on some people not showing up for the flight, so they hedge their bets, aiming for full flights. But as every seasoned traveler knows, that bet doesnt always pay off. The result: Passengers volunteering to take a different flight or the airline denying boarding to passengers who paid for the overbooked flight.
Which airline is the most likely to bump you?Boarding1Now/Getty Images
When it comes to involuntarily denying passengers boarding, Frontier Airlines is at the top of the list. If youve flown Frontier, you might not be too shockedtheres always a bit of a gamble with budget airlines, and Frontier is ranked the least reliable airline in America for a reason.
As Stooksbury told me, Frontier bumps over three people for every 10,000 passengers. While that number may not appear large, its over 400% more than the second-place carrier.
Which other airlines bump passengers often?Upgraded Points analyzed data on 10 major U.S. air carriers, then broke the ranking into two lists. The goal: Determine which carriers most often deny boarding involuntarily and which have the most voluntary denied boardings.
These are all of the airlines that made the list:
Frontier AirlinesAmerican Airlines NetworkSpirit AirlinesSouthwest AirlinesJetBlue AirwaysAlaska Airlines NetworkUnited Airlines NetworkHawaiian AirlinesDelta Air Lines NetworkAllegiant AirThe airlines most likely to bump youThese airlines have the most involuntary denied boardings. Heres how they rank, plus the number of people bumped per 10,000 passengers.
Frontier Airlines: 3.21American Airlines Network: 0.6Spirit Airlines: 0.43Southwest Airlines: 0.14JetBlue Airways: 0.09The airlines where people most often give up their seatsWhen airlines are overbooked, they may ask passengers to willingly give up their seats. Thats known in the travel biz as voluntary denied boarding, and if you fly one of these airlines, youll encounter it most often.
Heres how the airlines rank, plus the number of people who volunteer to give up their seats per 10,000 passengers.
Delta Air Lines Network: 7.49Spirit Airlines: 3.88Frontier Airlines: 3.27Alaska Airlines Network: 3.26American Airlines Network: 2.54Which airline bumps the fewest passengers?Upgraded Points found that budget airline Allegiant Air bumps the fewest passengers, both voluntarily and involuntarily. The airline ranked last in both categories, bumping zero people (per 10,000 passengers) involuntarily and 0.59 voluntarily.
What are your rights if youre bumped? If you get bumped from a flight, you have rightsthe Airplane Passengers Bill of Rights, to be exactand its best to know them. Stooksbury told me that the U.S. Department of Transportation says passengers who are bumped involuntarily are entitled to compensation based on the price of their ticket, how long the trip is getting delayed and whether the flight is domestic or international. Airlines must give you written details about your compensation right away.
Heres a quick rundown of what youre entitled to:
No delay or less than an hour delay:Sorry, no compensation for you.Delayed one to two hours on domestic flights:200% of your one-way fare, maxing out at $775Delayed two or more hours on domestic flights:400% of your fare, capped at $1,550Delayed four or more hours on international flights:400% of your fare, capped at $1,550So next time you book a flight, keep in mind that a cheap plane ticket might come with a bit of a risk. But as long as you know your rights, youll be ready to handle any travel hiccup that comes your way. Safe travels, and may you always make it to your destination without delay!

Velas Vibes: Two Resorts, Endless Experiences

Casa Velas and Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit offer distinct yet beautifully complementary experiences, showcasing the vibrant spirit of Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit. Together, they create a seamless journey of relaxation, adventure, and celebration, perfect for a single trip where you can enjoy the best of both worlds. Flying direct from Los Angeles to Puerto Vallarta Airport made our journey seamless and set the tone for an incredible getaway.

At Casa Velas, tranquility reigns supreme. Start your day with live music at breakfast, unwind by the expansive pool, and soak in the warmth of a team dedicated to making every moment special. Heathers birthday became an all-day celebration here, with songs, shots, and so much joy at breakfast. One of our highlights was an exclusive Velas experience: a private tour at AYCYA Raicilla Elaborado Artesanal. This family-owned company, founded in 2018, crafts some of the finest raicilla in the world. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Sierra Madre Mountains, we explored ancestral and artisan distilling techniques guided by a master raicillero, touring both the fields and the factory.

For those seeking pure relaxation, the Tau Beach Club is a must. Lounge in private cabanas, stroll barefoot along the golden sand, and let the gentle rhythm of the waves melt your cares away.

Grand Velas brims with vibrant energy and endless opportunities for adventure. From Fridas cooking class to karaoke nights, theres always something to ignite your spirit. Heathers birthday continued here with a magical dinner at Piaf, complete with cake and more surprises to make the day unforgettable.
One of the most memorable moments was our mixology class on the wraparound balcony of the Family Suite. The sunset views were breathtaking, the drinks were delicious, and the laughter was endless. Heather stole the show with her mixology skills, crafting the best drinks of the evening. Meanwhile, I couldnt resist adding my own fun twisthula hooping on the patio as the sun dipped below the horizon, blending movement, joy, and stunning views into one magical moment.
My personal highlight? The award-winning SE Spa at Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit. We began our spa journey with the Seven-Step Water Ceremony, a sensory exploration through a sauna, chromotherapy steam room, and hot-and-cold lagoon. Every detailfrom the serene atmosphere to the intricate flower petal mandalasfostered a deep sense of mindfulness. My treatment, the Neeyari Shamanic Massage Roots of the Earth, drew on ancient indigenous traditions to reconnect me with natures grounding energy. Medium pressure and thoughtful techniques guided me toward introspection and emotional renewal. SE Spa creates a meaningful experience designed to nurture your spirit and uplift your soul. We each left with a butterfly symbol, a reminder of transformation and renewal, feeling lighter, centered, and inspired.

Dining at Grand Velas is equally unforgettable, with a variety of restaurants offering culinary delights that cater to every palate. Families will love the lively kids club, while breathtaking ocean views set the stage for unforgettable moments. We laughed so much while I hula hooped not just by the pool but also on our balcony.
What makes a trip to these two resorts so special is how they complement each other. Casa Velas offers a serene, boutique-style escape, while Grand Velas provides a lively, expansive retreat. Together, they create a perfect balance, ensuring every part of your vacation feels complete.

Croatia may be teeming with tourists these days, but work with a travel advisor to discover fabulous, lesser-known islands and coastal medieval villages, to make the most of your time. Yachts are great for bonding but small yachts (less than 150ft) like Karizma (part of the Goolets portfolio) are perfect for exploration down the Adriatic Coast, as they can slip into many port towns that larger ships cannot. Hvar and Korcula are favorites.

Adventures in Ireland: Part Two Immersed in History and Culture

Ireland is a land where the past and present coexist in perfect harmony, each enriching the other. In my travel special on The Jet Set TV, I delved into the heart of this enchanting country, exploring its ancient traditions, revolutionary milestones, and modern-day elegance.
At Dromoland Castle, I stepped into a realm of regal beauty and age-old traditions. The falconry experience, where a majestic hawk took flight from my gloved hand, was a reminder of Irelands deep connection to nature and its enduring customs. Surrounded by the castles storied walls, I felt the weight of history blend seamlessly with the warmth of Irish hospitality.
In Dublin, The Shelbourne Hotel offered a front-row seat to Irelands revolutionary history. Celebrating 200 years of timeless elegance, this landmark is more than a place to stayits a living monument. In its hallowed Constitution Room, the Irish Constitution was drafted in 1922, marking a pivotal step in the nations path to independence. My stay in the Michael Collins Suite was equally unforgettable, with its thoughtful nods to the legacy of one of Irelands most iconic leaders.
The journey back even further in time led me to Newgrange, a Neolithic masterpiece that predates the Egyptian pyramids by over a thousand years. I hope to one personally experiencing the winter solstice alignment, when sunlight pierces through the passage to illuminate the inner chambera tribute to the ingenuity and spirituality of Irelands ancient builders.
For a modern contrast, I stayed at The Spencer Hotel, a sleek and stylish retreat on Dublins Docklands, where the luxurious lap pool and vibrant atmosphere offered a contemporary complement to the citys historic charm. Meanwhile, The Grafton Hotel, perfectly situated for immersing oneself in Dublins lively cultural scene, provided the ideal blend of comfort and energy.
Together with the breathtaking destinations from Part Onelike the Burren, Trad on the Prom, and the Wild Atlantic Waythis journey was a celebration of Irelands ability to weave together its storied past with a vibrant present. From ancient tombs and revolutionary milestones to castles and cosmopolitan comforts, Ireland offers an experience as diverse and timeless as the country itself.
Newgrange Solstice: A 5,000-Year-Old Celebration of Light and HistoryMy visit to Newgrange was unforgettable. On this December 21st solstice, the shortest day of the year, the sun perfectly aligns to illuminate the passage tombs inner chambera breathtaking sight that has been celebrated for over 5,000 years. Newgrange, a Neolithic tomb older than the Egyptian pyramids, holds a profound connection to Irelands rich heritage. Each time Ive visited, Ive been struck by the awe-inspiring history and the incredible alignment with the solstice. The precision of the ancient builders is truly remarkable, creating a deeply moving experience. On this special day, as the sun rises and its light pierces the passage, you feel a tangible link to the pasta moment that transcends time and reflects the power of ancient traditions. The ambassador of Ireland to the USA recommends it as her top pick for visitors to Ireland, and I wholeheartedly agreeNewgrange is a must-visit destination for anyone drawn to Irelands rich history and mystical sites.
Stepping into the enchanting world of Dromoland Castle felt like traveling back in timeStepping into the enchanting world of Dromoland Castle felt like traveling back in time. Once the ancestral home of the OBrien family, descendants of Brian Boru, High King of Ireland, this Irish castle is a living testament to over 1,000 years of history. With suits of armor guarding the hallways and stories echoing through its Gothic Revival architecture, the castle’s charm is truly timeless. During my visit, I had the privilege of meeting Jane OBrien, Castle Historian, from @enniswalking_tours, who brought the rich history of the castle to life. I enjoyed drinks in the drawing room, imagining the countless tales and gatherings that have graced these walls. Exploring the estate was unforgettableriding in a horse-drawn carriage, marveling at majestic owls, flying a Harris hawk during a falconry experience, and strolling along the walled garden. It felt like stepping into a Bridgerton-esque dream, where grand events and elegant parties might have once unfolded beneath the Irish sky.
To top it all off, indulging in the luxurious spa and savoring exquisite meals made the day magical. Dromoland Castle seamlessly weaves history and luxury, creating an experience that feels like a page out of a storybook. Have you ever dreamed of staying in an Irish castle?
Staying at Dromoland Castle felt like stepping into a fairytale, and my Queen Anne Suite was the perfect royal retreat. From the moment I walked in, I was enchanted by the giant marble tub, the spacious living room, and the thoughtful poem left by my bedside. Every detail was exquisite, from the plaid accents to the stunning views of the castle grounds. The luxurious bathroom featured Voya Irish seaweed products, making every bath feel like a spa experience.
The grand staircase, with its red carpet, set the tone for the regal experience, and breakfast was no exception. Alongside a huge buffet of local delicacies, freshly baked bread, and tempting treats, my omelet arrived under a silver dome, making me feel like true royalty.
Every corner of Dromoland Castle whispers elegance and history, offering an unforgettable escape into timeless luxury. Wouldnt you love to wake up in a place like this?

Hula hooping my way through Dromoland Castle was pure magic! From the grand steps to the enchanting walled garden and a tunnel of fairy lights, every moment felt like a dream come true. Spreading joy and hooping with happiness through the heart of Irelandwhat could be better?
Escape to The Spencer Hotel in Dublin, where contemporary luxury meets a prime locationEscape to The Spencer Hotel in Dublin, where contemporary luxury meets a prime location on the citys vibrant docks. With spacious suites featuring private balconies, enormous bathrooms, and stunning views of the water, this hotel is an urban oasis like no other.
The indoor swimming pool is perfect for a refreshing dip, while the onsite restaurant, EAST, delights with a fusion of bold flavors and exceptional dishes. Whether youre starting your day with a swim or ending it with a delectable meal, The Spencer has it all.
Located next to the award-winning EPIC Museum and offering spectacular nighttime views of the water, The Spencer Hotel is a perfect base for exploring Dublin while enjoying the serenity of the waterfront.
The Grafton Hotel is a true gem in the heart of Dublin! Nestled just steps from vibrant Grafton Street, it offers unbeatable access to the citys best nightlife, shopping, and cultural landmarks. Its prime location makes exploring effortlessstroll along Grafton Street, visit iconic spots like Dubray Books (where my book BRAVE-ish is now available!), and lose yourself in the magic of Dublins literary heritage. Whether browsing for your next read or soaking in the citys creative energy, this neighborhood is a book lovers dream.
The Shelbourne isnt just a hotelits a living testament to Dublins history and hospitalityThe Shelbourne isnt just a hotelits a living testament to Dublins history and hospitality, nestled in the heart of the city. For anyone seeking a blend of culture, luxury, and iconic Irish charm, this is the place to be. Celebrating its 200th anniversary, The Shelbourne is a timeless icon in the heart of Dublina place where rich history and modern luxury intertwine seamlessly. Staying in the Michael Collins Suite was extraordinary. From the elegant furnishings to the storied charm of the room, every moment felt like stepping into Dublins past while enjoying the finest comforts of today. Breakfast was a feast for the senses, each dish crafted with care to start the day on a perfect note. And the staff? They exemplify Irish hospitalitywarm, gracious, and dedicated to making every guest feel special. More than just a hotel, The Shelbourne is a living landmarka destination that embodies the heart of Dublins culture, history, and hospitality. If youre looking for an unforgettable blend of elegance and iconic Irish charm, this is the place to be.
Visit the constitution room at The ShelbourneThe Shelbourne Hotel isnt just a luxurious stayits a cornerstone of Irish history. In the room now called the Constitution Room, the Irish Constitution was drafted in 1922, marking a defining moment in the nations journey to independence. This historic space is intricately tied to the legacy of Michael Collins, the visionary revolutionary leader whose name now graces the extraordinary suite I had the privilege to call home during my stay. Michael Collins, often referred to as The Big Fellow, was not only a key strategist in Irelands fight for freedom but also a master negotiator who played a pivotal role in shaping the Anglo-Irish Treaty. His vision and determination laid the groundwork for the modern Irish state. Staying in a suite named in his honor was deeply moving, especially knowing that it pays homage to such a towering figure in Irelands past. The Constitution Room itself is a treasure trove of history, featuring five pages of the original draft of the Irish Constitutiona powerful reminder of the efforts that birthed a nation. Its impossible not to feel the weight of history here, where the ambitions and ideals of a free Ireland were first written down. Adding to the sense of connection was signing the Shelbournes famed guest registera tradition that links guests to a legacy of luminaries. U.S. Presidents like John F. Kennedy, Barack Obama, and Bill Clinton, along with Nobel laureates such as Seamus Heaney, have all left their mark here. Its a moment that underscores The Shelbournes role as a gathering place for visionaries, leaders, and icons across generations. The Shelbourne is far more than a luxury hotelits a living museum where Irelands past comes alive, offering a unique blend of history, heritage, and modern elegance. Staying here is not just a visit; its an experience that immerses you in the very fabric of Irelands story.
The Spa at The Shelbourne offers a serene escape in the heart of Dublin. The Spa at The Shelbourne offers a serene escape in the heart of Dublin. After a refreshing swim in the stunning indoor lap poolcomplete with a fitness center and saunait was time for the true highlight of my visit: the best blowout of my LIFE by Erin. Her precision and artistry created a flawless look that lasted longer than any other blowout Ive experienced. Beyond the hair, the spa offers an array of luxurious treatments designed to rejuvenate the body and mind. From deep tissue massages to calming facials, each experience is tailored for relaxation and indulgence. Erins expertise as a master hair stylist elevated the experience, leaving me feeling refreshed and radiant. Whether its a soothing soak, a refreshing swim, or a pampering treatment, The Shelbournes spa is a haven of sophistication and serenity.
