Mad Libs

Having trouble getting your kids to sit down and do school work this summer?  Of course, kids don’t want to work in the summer.  Summer is about having fun.  Bring back the FUN with Mad Libs!

I’m sure that you remember these from your youth.  Fill in the blanks with nouns, adjectives, and adverbs, then let the silliness ensue!  Reading these silly stories still makes me chuckle.  Kids can’t get enough and will spend hours learning.  Oh, I mean having fun!

Difference between L and R Sounds

Today’s question is from a Japanese speaker:   “I confuse the ‘L’ and ‘R’. What am I doing wrong?”

This is a very common problem for Japanese ESL speakers. Typically, this problem is due to confusion with the tongue placement.

Here is what I suggest:

For the “L”, place the tip of your tongue behind your top teeth. Your mouth will be slightly open. The air moves around the sides of your tongue out of your mouth.

For the “R”, place the tip of your tongue behind your bottom teeth. Your mouth will be open with your lips rounded. The air moves over your tongue and out of your mouth.

Try using the suggestions above on these words:

“long”-“wrong”

“lace”-“race”

“light”-“right”

Four Steps to Learning a New Skill

Learning any new skill takes patience and practice. It can be frustrating. Keep in mind these steps to acquiring a skill. It shows that you are making progress, even when you feel like you aren’t. Keep in mind; you MUST go through these steps to reach mastery of a skill.

1. Unconsciously incompetent

2. Consciously incompetent

3. Consciously competent

4. Unconsciously competent

In terms of accent training, these steps translate into:

1. You don’t know what you are saying incorrectly. You can’t understand what makes it difficult for others to understand you.

2. You know what you are doing to cause your accent, but you can’t say the sounds.

3. It takes a lot of work to think about what you are doing to speak without your accent. You can say new sounds in words, in sentences, and while reading. You can even use your new accent while having a conversation if you are very focused. During conversation, you make a lot of mistakes but correct them.

4. You have a new accent and don’t have to think about using it. Every once in a while, you make a mistake, and quickly fix it.
